I am looking for a good family gift for Christmas. I have three kids, two girls (8.5 & 5,5) and one son (almost 4). I recently divorced, and my ex now has the Wii. My oldest has been asking for the Kinect system, but I've heard it's better for older children. Any help deciding between the Wii and Kinect system would be appreciated! Thanks!

What can I do next?

My kids are a little bit older, 10 & 12, but we have a Wii & use it every day. I'm getting them an Xbox 360 with Kinnect for Christmas though because it's literally the ONLY thing my 12 year old will tell me he wants.

We have both. The Wii is in the closet with a layer of dust. For the age of your children, the Kinect will be the best choice. They will enjoy for years to come. The games are amazing!

We have the xbox with Kinect and when the kids can't get outside to play, they are playing the Kinect. They really like Dance Central, Wipe Out, and Kinect Sports. The boxing is hilarious. I have Zumba Dance and love it.

You use more of your body with Kinect than you do with the Wii.

We LOVE our xbox. Not only is it "cooler" and the graphics are millions and millions of times better than wii, but there's better games......for older people. But we're actually finding the game selection for my 5 year old very limited (there are games, but not tons), whereas Wii has pretty much all games for kids.
But they can grow into the Kinect games, and that system is newer so I'm sure they'll continue putting out newer games that the kids will grow into. I'd probably lean to the xbox, but sometimes I regret not having some games for my little guys.

We have both, in my defense I got one of the first Wii s that came out. At the time it was the best. The problems with the Wii is the controller is hard to control and that you can do a lot of the motions with a flick of the wrist instead of full body you see on the commercials.

The Xbox you move. It is a lot of fun for everyone and I haven't had any trouble finding games.

Kinect for SURE! You get MORE exercise & the kids will love it because of the different features it has such as when you dance it'll show a small frame of you actually dancing which makes it really funny.

Kinect has fewer games, but is much more accurate.
We got the Wii last year and I wish we would have gotten the Kinect for the dance and exercise programs.

For younger kids, having the same system and games would save you from having to help as much. I personally detest all video games. The kids fight over who caused them to lose so we don't allow more than 2 kids to play the Wii and only for 30 minutes total per day.

We have both. My kids are teens. The Wii is made by Nintendo and is much more kid-friendly and has lots of kid games. Many of the Nintendo games are only available in Nintendo - Mario brothers have all kinds of games that are fabulously kid-friendly and are only Nintendo games.

Kinect is part of the XBox system - it has better graphics but is really more geared to teens and young adults. Personally I wish we had never gotten it for our family as many of the violent games are on XBox and it's a constant issued now.

Based ont he ages of your kids get the Wii - you can have fun as a family!

I would say give the Kinect a whirl. We got the Wii just as the Kinect was coming out... and while we love the Wii, there are some cool features to the Kinect as well. Particularly that you use your body as the controller, not something in your hand (or at least that is MY understanding of it).

Secondly, if hubby has the Wii, then YOU want something different than what they have over there. What fun would it be to have the same thing? Get them something different!
