Child Development Books

I'm looking for a good general child development book. Physical, emotional, social, mental. I'm worried I'm expecting too much from my kids and I want kind of a reference to see if I'm in the ballpark. Thanks!

8 Year Old Crush, to Young to Have Girlfriend?

My son is 8 and has a major crush on the girl that is on his baseball team. He wants to ask her to be his girl friend, but I'm so not ready for this. I am so happy that he trusted me enough to tell me and ask me first if he can have a girl friend. I don't want my son, or my daughter, to start having girlfriends and boyfriends because I want to make sure that my children don't get to the point of relying on having a girlfriend or boyfriend for their happiness. I know from experience that it's easy to fall into. I know most parents have...

Helping My Children Become Self-reliant.

I want to raise my children to be good decision makers and be a bit more structured than I was as a child, but I don’t want to be a micro mom manager. I want them to gain the skills they need to begin to take more responsibility for their activities. Dressing themselves, making sure they have all of their homework etc. Does anyone have any techniques or tools I can use with young children?

How Do I Teach Independence?

Hi ladies! I need to know how to teach my almost 4 year old to be independent when doing class work. For example, when we try to get him to write his name he says "I need your help" or "I don't know how". Basically, the only way to get him to write his name is to sit with him and praise every single stroke. UGH! Now he is in preschool and he wants the teachers to "help" him with EVERYTHING. I do not understand how we got here. **I suppose I need to give a little more information. My son started potty training at 27 months (very...

Help with a Child with a Possible Learning Disability

Since my six year old son has been able to talk, he has always had difficulty in pronouncing certain letters and words. At the age of 3 my husband and I decided to take him to a speech therapist. The results were that his speech was normal for his age. Now he is 6, at times, his speech is still difficult to understand. He stutters when he gets excited and he is stil having difficulty grasping phonics and reading. My husband has dyslexia and I asked my pediatrican about that and his speech. The doctor sought the advice of his teacher who...

Outfit Ideas for Upcoming "Natural" Pageant

Hi moms, I asked this a month or so ago and didnt get to many responses, so I thought I would ask again :) I put my now 13 month old daughter in a prelims pageant for the Little Miss Wyoming Scholarship pageant in January of this year and she won Tiny Miss Photogenic and had her way paid to the state finals in early June. I'm looking for ideas on outfits. I am in need of three of them; 1) Western outfit for the Hoedown party the night before (just for fun), 2) casual wear for the personality competition and 3) a pretty party dress. ...

Puberty at 7 ? ? ?

My daughter is 7yrs old (she weighs 49lbs) and has a lump on one breast so I took her to the dr today to have it checked out and the dr said that the lump was actually breast tissue growing. She said that its puberty. Anyone had this happen to their daughter this early? Seven just seems so early. (I'll be honest, I don't remember when I started getting my breasts when I was her age) Should I get a second opinion?

Social Phobia, Me Again.

As a child I was a social outcast, a nerd. I was overweight, had horrible acne, bad perm, oversized, thick glasses. I was a mess. I was a complete introvert but managed to have a few friends. One became my best friend and was very loyal to me. She moved away when we were in highschool but as adults we still talk every few months. I was depressed a lot during the teen years. Once I lost the weight, my skin cleared up, and I got contacts, I felt slightly more confident. My reputation for being a nerd followed me into high school as I...

How Do You Volunteer Your Time?

I'd like to start doing some volunteer work with my kids and was wondering if any of you have any advice on which organization I should participate with. Do any of you do any volunteer work? And if yes, which type of volunteer work do you find most fulfilling? Since my daughter (5yrs old) is amazing with the elderly and my son (7 yrs old) prays for the poor and needy every night, I wonder if there's an organization that has a combination of the two that needs help. Thanks ladies!
