Swimming Lessons--should I Do Them Myself?

I was a swim instructor for 5 years and (obviously) want my two kids (5-1/2 and 8) to learn how to swim. However, I've heard that you can't teach your own kids to swim and just want to put them into swimming lessons. My husband thinks that I'm being lazy and "not wanting" to teach my own kids, but I don't want one more thing to discipline/push them on. What do you think?

All She Wants to Do Is Dance

Hi everyone,my 4yr. old daughter loves to dance and has mentioned she wants to be a ballerina. Does anyone know of an affordable place where I can take her for ballet or dance lessons of some sort. I'm a single parent so I can't afford too much on my own. I also thought about ballroom dancing for her but I don't know what's the right age to start that at. Any suggestions anyone? You all always give me good advice so I want to say thank you in advance.

Baseball for a Child

Ladies, we just signed my son up for baseball and he just turned 5 in December, and is in Pre K, so I believe most of the boys on the team are older than him. The problem is after the game the coach chooses a player to receive the game ball. This is the fourth game they've played and my son, for some reason, has to have this ball. Well, last night they lost the game again and the coach asked them who wanted the ball and most of the kids, along with my son, raised their hands for the ball. Well, my son once again did not get the ball. ...

Upwards Basketball Program

My son likes basketball and a neighborhood mom suggested he register for the Upwards basketball program which is associated with our local church. We don't attend the church or any other house of worship, it's just not part of our life right now. If you are familiar with the Upwards program, could you tell me if my son will feel out of place or uncomfortable in that kind of program? I don't think so and I will ask the mom next time I see her what she thinks. I just wanted your opinions too.

Has anyone had experience with this type of school and if so what did you think of it?

Ipod but No Cell Phone? Worth It?

My husband and I do not have a cell phone, we don't have cable, and we don't have any gaming system. We have wireless internet and a desktop computer. We do not want cell phones or cable. We've considered a gaming system in a couple of years. I have been looking at getting an Ipod Touch 4G lately. My husband doesn't think I will use it enough to warrant the cost. Does anyone else out there have one that doesn't have any other gadgets? That feels it was worth it? How do you use it?

I am in my 6th year as a cub scout leader. Oour youngest boy is a "wolf" this year. I recently became a Daisy scout leader after signing our daughter up and waiting a few months to determine that the "leader" couldn't fit it into her schedule. My problem is that our meeting time is on the same night and that our times overlap. I want this to be a perfect experience for all the kids involved but don't know how to make everyone happy. Sports on TV

Do you count sports towards kids TV time? I'm leaning towards no. My husband loves sports so watching them with the my daughter, and eventually my sons, is bonding time. My daughter and my husband curl up on the couch together and watch all sports. My twins are only 4 months, but my husband is looking forward to watching sports with them when they are older. I'm curious if I'm trying to justify the TV watching, or if it isn't a big deal. She doesn't watch much other TV on sports days, but without sports, she is usually allowed 2 hours...

Dance Class Drama

Sorry if this is too long, but my 2 and a half year old is having trouble at dance class. This is a dance school that offers a tiny tot class for 2 and 3 year olds (but only in the evening) and promotes it with an open house and two free sessions. When I took my daughter, my son had fun too, so I signed him up with the 4-5 year olds. It is a combined tuition that is a "deal" when you add a second child. I only added my son because I was taking my daughter. Their classes are at the same time. To the issue, my daughter has been ejected from...

Books for Just Starting to Read

Hi All My son is 4 (almost 5) and is just beginning to read short, predictable text. I am really excited because, I used to teach first grade / reading. Yay! Anyway, this may seem strange because I am a teacher, but I am appalled at the lack of readable books for this age/reading level in the library. (At school we had a book closet full of little books just right for this stage of reading) My son's preschool teacher seemed a bit taken aback when I wondered if I could choose a few titles from the school's book closet to read with him....

A Mom T Ball Coach?

I recently attended a Tiny T Ball game and saw that most of the Dads were "coaching" the kids on the field (complete with COACH t-shirts), while the Moms were watching from the sidelines. Has anyone ever seen Moms coaching? Would YOU do it? Just wanted to know what people thought of the idea.
