My family will be vacationing for a week in the Outer Banks.,,specifically Duck. I am looking for ideas of things to do with my 2 year old son other than hang out on the beach every day. We would love to visit an aquarium one day but I am still looking for one close by. Any ideas or experiences you could share with me?? Thanks!

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

We spent a morning at the NC Aquarium. It was about a 45 minute drive from Duck but it was a nice drive. We were able to stop at a few shops on the way home as well. My son enjoyed beach time in the morning and pool time after his nap. We went shopping at Scarborough and Timbuck II and he enjoyed that as well.

The dunes are at Jockey Ridge. There are some great things to see. Kitty Hawk is great. But they are all tough to do if you have a heat index of 102 (which they are having right now). Possibly when you go the temps might be a bit more relaxed than they are right now. On a sunny day, sand can get 20 degrees hotter than the air temp (so if it gets to 90, the sand can really burn your feet at 110). Early mornings are great (watch the sun rise! it's beautiful). When the heat builds, it's time to nap inside then hang out by a pool. Have fun!

They have dunes in the outerbanks that you can fly a kite on... or he can just roll down :) I think they are more towards kitty hawk though. I am not sure. They also have a cute putt putt place where a train takes you to your 1st hole. The outlets are nice...but that is for us mommies ;) You can also see the wild horses. I have not done that yet, but have heard it is amazing. The outerbanks is so beautiful...hope you have a wonderful vacation!

There are 2 or 3 lighthouses close by. If you go all the way down the inlet to Corolla, i think, that is where some of the wild horses are. If you have a 4 wheel drive, you can drive on the beach.

There are putt-putt and carnivals.

Also, in case you don't know, most everything closes around 9pm. All of the restaurants have the last seating around 8:15pm. That was a hard lesson. There is a Kmart, Walmart and a Bloom that are open later/24hours.

I'm pretty sure that the aquarium is over near Manteo, which is about a 30m drive from Duck (depending on the traffic).
