are there things you personally would do, but would not do them in front of your children? Does that make you a hypocrit?

So What Happened?

mamazita, you have a problem reading all questions and unorstanding them. Just stop answering.

To everyone else, thank you. It seems hypocritical to say "you can't have chocolate before bed"...while Im eating hershey kisses by the case. But I knew the difference. Just as I am against drinking in front of my kids, but bartended for my career choice. And btw, making that career choice was by far the worst decision of my life....fast cash but NO security.

Interesting question...

Being a hypocrite is a state of an expectant mind, not an actual action.

All I can think of is pick my nose, eat a whole candy bar wo sharing, swear, tell someone off, and eat a gallon of ice cream. I have also eaten a piece of homemade pie in another room and then pretend my 2nd piece at the dining room table is my first piece, all the while telling my son he can only have one piece. Hey, I like pie. So sue me.

If you don't judge me, I won't judge you.

I don't think that makes you a hypocrite that just means there are somethings there at appropriate for kids to see and something things that are not. There are a lot of shows I watch that they can not because they are too young to watch them.

Wait, what?
There are many perfectly normal things that adults do every day (um, like have sex, watch rated R+ movies, talk about frightening medical or financial news) that are not appropriate in the presence of children.
I don't get your question.

Not having sex in front of your children does not make you a "hypocrite".

A fly in your chardonnay is not "ironic". Neither is rain on your wedding day.

Dehusking corn in a store is not "stealing".

Giving us something to ponder for the evening does not make it a "deep thought."

I would not have sex...or 'pet' in front of my kiddos.

And, NO, it would not make me a hypocritE.

Most everything else I 'do'...I have been comfortable 'doing' in front of kiddos...from 'going potty' when THEY were training...to demonstrating 'appropriate alcohol consumption'.

Was there something in particular YOU had in mind with this question?

Just curious.

I don't think it is called hypocrisy.
I believe it is called parenting.

We do things, as adults, that are not meant for children to do - they do not have the physical and emotional maturity to do all things adults do.
I am meant to raise my son into responsible adulthood - I do that by modeling appropriate behavior and also teaching him behavior and actions appropriate to his age. Since there are 30 years between us, of course I do things that he cannot.

Sorry, but I am not sure what there is to ponder - but to ponder the question?

I wouldn't have sex in front of my kids, pretty sure that makes me normal, not a hypocrite. :)

I don't hide things from my kids as a rule. Even the things I haven't ran out and told them about I would admit to if asked. I don't believe in deception, you can't lie to your kids and expect them to come clean with you.

Yeah yeah, there is Santa and his buds but that is different.

I think you fall more in a hypocrite mode if you say something someone else is wrong but you are doing it yourself.

Absolutely and no, I don't think it makes me a hypocrit. Just because I don't so some things in front of my kids, doesn't mean that I lie to them about whether or not I do them. Sex is, of course, the perfect example. While I would not HAVE sex in front of them, I wouldn't ever tell them that grandpa and I don't have sex.

Other things like don't cross the street in the middle of the block I would do but I would tell my children not to do for their own safety. Maybe that makes me a hypocrit but I think it just makes my kids safer.

I don't necessarily think it makes us hypocrits, it just means that we want better for our children. The old saying "Do as I say, not as I do" comes to mind.

I have sex.. but not in front of them.
I watch movies with sexual content and adult language... but not in front of them.
I swear...but not in front of them.
I drink... but not in front of them
I smoke... but not in front of them.
I shower... but not in front of them.
I have a "dirty" mind... but not in front of them.

When my kids are old enough they will have sex... but not in front of me.
When my kids are old enough they will be allowed to watch movies with sexual content and adult language.
When my kids are old enough I will probably loosen my langauge some and will they more than likely
When my kids are of legal age to smoke, that is their choice.
well my kids shower now... except the 3 & 5 yr old I don't want to see the others and only the two little ones see me, but soon enough that will change also.
When my kids are older I'm sure they will be victims of the dirty mind also.. no adults are left out of that in my family.

Hypocrite? Nope not even close... its all age appropriate ( even if those "standards" are different in every family)

It's also called status offences when the kids do it and it's not illegal...lol.

Like peeing outside, they can get a way with it due to their ages but let a grown up do it and they get labeled a child abuser and have that on their record for the rest of their lives.

There are lots of things that kids can do that parents can't do and vice versa. Kids can't drink or smoke. They can't cuss or wear a gun. There are just things not allowed due to the weight of the action compared to their ages. So of course there are things we don't do in front of the kids.

Why scar them for life......lol..

Any activity rated R or X doesn't happen in front of the kids! LOL And NO, it doesn't make me a hypocrite - they are children and don't need to see things that are above their current level of understanding or maturity.

I think the hypocrite part comes in if you engage in activities you wouldn't want your own kids to engage in when they are this age. Of course we do stuff we don't want them to SEE (personal and private activities, age-INappropriate material) but I am cool with them doing and seeing those same things when they themselves are
adults. I don't have any vices or secret activities I wouldn't be OK with them also having when they are "of age" (like social drinking, sexual activity with their S.O. etc).

Depends on what it is (as many folks said - sex = no) and the age of the child / level of understanding.

So I would say yes there are things I would not do in front of my 4 year old and it does not make me a hypocrite. She is just not old enough to understand what is happeneing and could misinterpret....

And isn't it only mid afternoon in California?

Yes, there are things that I would avoid doing with any type of audience. I am a hyocrite ONLY if I teach that under the same set of circumstances at the same age with the same consequences--all things being exactly the same as in my life--someone should never even consider making the same choice(s) that I have made.

I would not have sex in front of my children. There are certain conversations I might not have in front of my kids, or certain movies I might not watch with my kids in the room. I'm pretty sure none of this would make me a hypocrit.
