I am trying to decide which to get for my very intelligent 4 1/2 year old son for Christmas. He has never owned a handheld video game system before. Just has the Smart Cycle and I know he would really enjoy one, just unsure of which one to get. I have narrowed down my choices after doing research to the Leapster Explorer, Mobigo system, or the Fisher-Price iXL Learning System. Which is the most educational, but keeps the child's interest the most, is the most durable, and the most cost efficient (with games, accessories, charger, etc)? I am not sure which way to go.......

So What Happened?

Thank you for the advice. Sounds like Leapster is the way to go. I saw the Leapster 2 at Target and then also the new Leapster Explorer at Target. But they also had the V-Tech Mobigo that is more touch screen and the new Fisher-Price iXL system that looks neat as well. And I was so confused. Keep the recommendations coming..... thank you!

I vote Leapsters too. My son had a Leapster and then a Leapster2 and really enjoyed both. They have a large selection of games and did a good job of blending educational skills in with the games. I bought a Diji (which they are discontinuing) and it is NOT recommended by me. The educational stuff is more like an intermission in the games, like... fight bad guys <pause> "Which of these is a triangle?" <unpause> fight more bad guys. I really didn't like it.

I think they have a new Leapster out? It would be on the LeapFrog website. I googled the site and the add said 20%
20% Off Site Wide With Promo Code LFFAMILY. Free Shipping Over $50 :) Looks like the new one is Leapster Explorer that you mentioned.

Good luck!

I am not familiar with the others either. My kids loved the leapsters and even though they are 10 now, they still play them. The games are easy and great for their education.

Well I don't know about the others... but my kids, since 2 years old... have had the Leapster.
They love it.
It is educational AND fun.
My kids, from 2 years old, could use it and play with it on their own.
They are now 4 and 8 years old... and still play with it.
It just takes batteries. Easy. I can't be bothered with chargers... .just another thing to lose track of.

all the best,
Susan

My 3 year old really enjoys her Leapster 2. The new Leapster Explorer looks great but the Leapster 2 games and accessories won't work with it (boo to Leap Frog!). I am getting my daughter the FP Xli for Christmas. BTW someone posted a similar question about a week ago. I posted a link to a comparison of the different learning devices. I found it through a Google search.

I bought my son the FP ixl for his bday this Summer. Now I'm going to buy him the Leapster Explorer for Christmas...The iXL just wasn't that engaging...Bored of it after about 2 months....My older son had a Leapster and played with it for years....Wish I hadn't made an expensive mistake..but oh well....I wanted to try something new....Also I believe but am not positive that the Explorer has a touch screen....

Both of my children have used Leapsters and loved them. Last year I got my son a Didj. He really liked it. We got my Daughter one this Christmas. She still uses her Leapster, just wanted to get something more advanced. I do not know much about the others, but Leap Frog is a really great company!

My son has the Leapster 2 and loves it. I don't know about the Explorer, but the Leapster 2 has games that keep him occupied, and it is very educational! As for durability, it has been dropped plenty and still is as good as it was when he got it last Christmas. The games are often on sale, and I have also found coupons in the paper for $5! I recommend them to everyone! :)
