Is It Safe?

Does anyone know if it's safe to use Lysol on baby toys and other things that end up in the mouth? There aren't any warnings on the can, but I just want to make sure before I use it. After reading about the hand sanitizer scares on Snopes.com, I'm hesitant to use anything anymore.

What can I do next?

Chlorox makes a spray, I think it's called "anywhere", this is what we use. Says that it's safe for pacifiers, anything. Don't know how much you can trust that, but it's gotta be safer than a lot of other things like mold and stuff that would grow on toys eventually. I have heard lately though not to overdo it with this kind of thing. It's good for kids to be exposed to germs to so they can build up immunities. I pretty much only use it when one of the kids is sick and to clean tables and stuff where they eat. Hope this helps!

Great questions and no it is not safe! It contains Phenols and Agent Orange (dioxin. Phenol causes caustic burns, kidney and liver damage and hyperactivity. If you would like more information on toxic products please visit my Healthyliving News: http://healthyhouse4u.blogspot.com/

Bleach, clorox are all toxic as well and I would not recommend using them in your home. Any label that has a danger warning on it shouldn't be in the home especially if you have children.

I know that we have heard and used these products for years however research shows and the epa has researched these facts that the air we breath in our homes in 3-5 times worse than the air we breat outside. Scary but true.

I use all non toxic products in my home- if you would like more information I would be happy to talk with you and share with you where I shop. You can email me at: ____@____.com

Have a great day!

I don't know if Lysol is safe or not, but there are products specifically made for spraying toys to sanitize them. You can usually find them in the baby section at most mega-marts like Target or Wal-Mart. I think one is called "Clean and Play." There is another product I think called "Anywhere Sanitizer" or "Anywhere Spray" that you can use, well, anywhere and it doesn't have to be washed off after use like most sanitizers. It's marketed for use in kitchens where it is likely to get on food, so it's not harmful to ingest.

Hi, B.,

I would not use Lysol on baby toys - Pampers, made a product that worked really well for us called Clean N Play. They have it for sale at Babies R Us and I think Wal*Mart also carries it.

I also used to put a lot of my daughter's toys in the top rack of the dishwasher if they were sturdy enough and didn't have batteries. That worked well.

I have to agree with the vinegar and water. It is as good as using bleach however safer. I use it to clean my sons medical equipment. I was told by the doctor to use it. But there are other good things to use as well. Good luck!

I use bio-kleen or any other "natural" type cleaners from Whole foods, Wild Oats or Vitamin Cottage. You don't even have to rinse it off..

I teach classes on this.
LYSOL IS A RESPITORY IRRITANT
I suggest never buying any of the product.

Since you are not required to follow Health Dept. guidelines checking at health food stores is an option.

Following is state guidelines for childcare.

Option #1
Use 1/2 ounce regular old fashion clorox (NOT SCENTED< GENERIC OR CLEAN UP OR ADVANTAGE they have added chemicals)
*add 1/2 ounce to 4 ounces water.
*pour over disposable baby wipes to wipe with
or sray or spray on.
It must sit for a minimum of two minutes fefore you wipe it off
or it is not effective. This is the guidelines for cleaning in childcare homes and centers.
Always dilute clorox in cold water and make fresh every 24 hours or it wil not work.

*Option 2 Run through top shelf of diswasher

*Option 3 Wash well with your favorite soap & water

REMEMBER:
WATER RINSES OFF VIRUS AND SOAP KILLS BACTERIA.
CLOROX IS USED FOR MORE SERIOUS CONCERNS LIKE HEPATITIS,
HIV VIRUS, COCKSACKIE VIRUS A etc...

Lysol seems like it'd be a bit harsh, but I'm not sure. Clorox makes a hard surface sanitizer that is supposed to be a safe as water on toys.

I would not use Lysol at all. It has chemicals in it that we should not be breathing as well. I would not use that clorox anywhere spray either, just for the fact of who it's made by. Bleach is not safe and can harm your lungs and insides as we are breathing it in the air, far long after it has been used. There are safer alternatives to all this stuff. Just remember the more natural ingredients, the safer it will be.

I asked my pediatrician the same question when my son was the same age. There are way to many potentially harmful chemicals in those products that may put your little one at risk. Warm soapy water works as well as anything to remove dirt and bacteria.

Hi B.,

I worked in a daycare once, and they used bleach water on everything. One part bleach to 5 parts water. Just washing things with soap and water, and puting things in the dishwasher works too.

You are supposed to wash Lysol off before kids put stuff in their mouths. That kind of defeats the purpose of using a quick spray!! I like that Clorox Hard Surface Spray. It is with the cleaning supplies and is in a blue spray bottle. It is safe for use on all sorts of stuff and you can even use it around food. Hope that helps.

I would not use Lysol on the babies toys either -- There is a company out there called Melaleuca that makes a non-toxic cleaner called "Tough & Tender" and seems to work pretty well on the toys. The only thing I didn't like is that you have to join and spend a certain amount of money each month or they sent you a bunch of stuff you didn't want.

I am sure that you can find the same sorts of things at Whole Foods too.
