Bloody Nose - Fayetteville,NC

My son also has a problem with nose bleeds. I occasionally get them myself. We both have allergy and sinus problems that contribute to the problem. I agree with the others. A cool mist humidifier, saline nose drops, and a little vaseline will probably work wonders for her. These are all suggestions my son's allergist provided us. It really does help. It is easiest to apply the vaseline with a q-tip. Maybe when she is sleeping since she is so determined for you to not touch her nose. Good Luck. If none of these suggestions help I would definately see an Ear, Nose Throat specialist or an Allergist. But I would try these things first, so that way you have more info to tell the Doc as to what is or isn't helping. Many times this helps in diagnosing the patient, as i have learned from my own experience with both of my children. It seems the pediatrician or other doctors always want to ask "So, what seems to make the symptoms better/worse?" Hope all the advice is helpful to you.

I am an Er doc who used to do exclusively Peds ER. It is most likely that your child has nasal drying and irritation. I woudl not use Afrin in this age group. Saline drops are OK, but a bit of Vasoline on a qtip may be your best bet. A humidifier is also a great idea. If this does not clear up in the next couple of weeks I would have the child checked both for the presence of a foreign body and for a problem with clotting. Hope that helps.

My 5 year old son gets bloody noses quite frequently, sometimes he is just walking or sleeping and it starts pouring out, other times there is just dried blood there. He was tested for hemophilia, but only males can have hemophilia from my understanding. The test was negative and the doctor said that his capillaries in his nostrils are just closer to the skin surface than the average person, so they are easily irritated and broken, hence the frequent bloody nose. I'm not sure if I've been helpful at all, but I would guess that you are right and that her nose is just irritated from being sick. Just to be safe...maybe you'll have to deal with her kicking and screaming for a few minutes and use a flashlight to make sure she hasn't put something in her nose. I had a friend whose 2 year old daughter stuck a bunch of rocks in her nose and were going to need to go to an Ear Nose & Throat specialist but the last one finally fell out on its own before the appointment. her nose is probably just really dried out. you could try to use a saline nose spray. just squirt it up the nostril a few times a day.

More than likely it is irritation. This has happened to both of my children more than once. A little saline drops will help, but its nothing to worry about.

I think it is normal for kids to have bloody noses-but I would ask an Ear Nose and Throat doctor-they are the experts. I am sure nothing is abnormal on your daughter and using a humidifier may take care of it!

after i had my 1st child i was getting really severe bloody noses, one sent me to the e.r. the doc there said it it was from lack of moisture in my house and my capillaries lying close to the surface. he told me to use afrin for 3 days to shrink the blood vessels and use a humidifier or vaporizer to add moisture in the air. it helped...no more nosebleeds. but i would talk to you ped before using afrin fro you daughter...plain old saline is probably better for her age. it can loosen any dried mucous and blood and help moistin her nasal passages.

When I went through something like this with my oldest I took her to the doctor. Come to find out she'd seen daddy shove a tissue in his nose to clean so she did the same with a diaper wipe and it got stuck.
It could be something in her nose or she picked it and it's sore and raw. I'd take her to her pediatrician to be safe.

Put a humidifier in her bedroom, and keep door closed while rumming. this will help put moisture back into her enviroment. Running this during the night while she is sleeping will be a great benefit. You can get basic simple ones at almost any store. costs around 12.00, cool mist would be best.

Hey, I'm sorry to here about your little girl. She probably has ruptered a small blood vessel. And with the constant blowing of her nose and crying. It doesn't have the time to heal. My boy's and husband have constant nose bleeds. Try not to let her put her fingers in her nose. And just watch from a distance without drawing attention to her nose. And it will be healed in no time.

When my daughter was small she was like that and the doctor told me to use a humidifier or put water in a kettle on the stove and crack the window a little to keep the house from being so dry. M. M.
