TV Show "Family Guy" Opinions for Kids

I screen what my kids watch very closely. Last night when I went out, my husband let the kids watch Family Guy. I don't think it's an age appropiate show for young kids. I don't care for the jokes, sex talk and some language. What do you all think of it, I told my husband if you all think I am over reacting, I will give in, but I really don't think I am. I am just a bit angry since he knows how I feel about the show. The only way I found out is my 6yo DS told me this morning.
I do have to add that if he had his way, we would even own a tv at all, he didn't before he met me and never had one growing up either. So with his views on most tv shows I can't believe he allowed them to see it.

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Thank you to everyone that responded. I am glad I am not the only one that feels this way about the show. I knew it wasn't age appropiate, but just needed some outside views to back me up. I told my husband that most of you feel the same way as I do. He said he was sorry and it won't happen again.

Cheri, I do not let my kids watch it. I won't even watch it. That show is terrible. There is nothing "family" about it. My son could be 16 and wouldn't be allowed to watch it.

Totally inappropriate! It is a funny show, but for adults. The only good thing about your son being so young is that he probably didn't understand any of it. I don't think that you over-reacted at all.

I agree! My husband will put on the Simpson's and Family Guy and both are not child oriented. They are also not morally appropriate and it doesn't send them the correct message. When it's on I tell my kids while in front of my husband that I don't want them to watch that and that it's time to go to bed. My oldest questions me and I tell her it's not appropriate for her to watch and that it's an adult cartoon. I make sure I stay that stuff in front of my husband so he will not put it on infront of them but he doesn't listen-eye roll.

My biggest concern with family guy is the violence, which doesn't "just go over their heads." There's quite a bit in there, along with language and plenty of images that could be very disturbing and influencial on young minds.

I just think Family Guy is a dumb show to the poing I don't watch it. My ex does allow our daughter(7) to watch it though. I've never been to strict about what she watches though.

You are not overreacting at all. That show is completely innapropriate for children.

I love Family Guy, but I would never let my kids watch it. It is totally inappropriate for young children, and even young teens. You're not over-reacting at all!

If he's worried about missing the latest episode, he can always check out websites like SurfTheChannel.com that stream tv episodes (they have just about everything) so that way he can still see his shows, but after the kids are in bed and won't be exposed.

Hi Cheri,

I agree with you!

I do NOT let my kids watch that junk! And they are 21 & 18!

I never let them watch the Simpson's either. I find them degrading, offensive & personally really stupid shows.

I don't understand what people actually see in these shows, but I find them rather offensive. When our kids were little, we let them watch shows that had some kind of education, or meaning, like it taught them some kind of lesson.

Good luck!

We're fairly relaxed on what we let our kids watch, although we do have a line... Family Guy is over it. My husband & I both really enjoy the show, our 5 year old is somewhat familiar with some of the characters, but he doesn't get to watch it. The humor is just too crude for his age.

Many of the jokes probably go over the heads of most kids, but you just can't be too careful. So, yeah, you're not overreacting. :)

We don't have any regular tv at all. We have NO cable and did NOT buy the "box" so we could get the local stations. So, the only tv our kids get to watch are movies. Disney, Leap Frog, and kids movies we get from the library.

We have also considered having NO TV at all. So, if you are both leaning towards that, give it a try. Put it in the basement or storage for a month and see how it goes. The only reason we still have our tv is because there is NO WAY FOR OUR KIDS TO SEE INAPPROPRIATE SHOWS!!! We don't want ourselves seeing those types of shows so I would definitely not expose our children to them.

Just the other day, my 19 yo had my 5 yo watching it. I put a stop to it right away! I dont know how old all your kids are, but I would not want a 6 yo watching it. Period.

I don't think you're overreacting at all. My concern is that the humor in shows like Family Guy and the Simpsons is quite sarcastic...and kids don't understand sarcasm until they're older...not to mention the violence, sex, etc.

I also want to add that you should trust your gut...not the Mamasource majority! You're a good parent...listen to your intuition!
