Seeking Other Mothers Who Have Children with Mixed Dyslexia

Dyslexics are very intelligent people, they just have a reading/writing problem. My husband is 32 years old and a Dyslexic. He reads at about a 2nd or 3rd grade level. Just like in most disabilitys, there are different levels of difficuilty. This "disability" is also a blessing, most kids will develop a photographic memory; as is the case with my husband. Look for books on tape/CD. and Buy they actual book for your son to read along with. Or rent at the local libary. It will help him develop his photographic memory. Best of luck to you and you son.

I think this is a shame that the district you are in has not identified these problems until now. They were there from the early years I'm sure.

Knowing it now can help you work with him. I suggest you make an appointment with Special Education department, Principal included and discuss your concerns. You have the right to understand all the testing and results that have developed. I would request that supplimentary materials be given to use at home. Also suggest the use of a Lap top computer when he works of writing. There is lots of soft ware out that you can have him work on. The school should give you names and resources for that as well.

I also have 5 children and 3 of them were classified as Dyslexic at a much earlier age though.Its hard for them to exactly tell you how they visualize things.My now 11yr old Has been in an LRC program at his grade school for 4yrs now.Basically they have gotten him to memorize words that he will need to get through life.When he started he was in the end of 2nd grade reading at a late kindergarten reading level.At the end of 5th grade he was at a above average 5th grade reading level.So now they are concentrating on his writing.Just ask alot of questions and go to the IEP meetings make sure he does the extra work they ask of him.The schools have really helped my boys.You just need to make sure the do the home part of the work they ask because they usually only have 45min a day in class which isn't alot but it can help.
