5 Month Old Allergic to Rice Cereal

My 5 month old is allergic to rice cereal and banana (his cheeks turn red within minutes and they are itchy). He is not allergic to sweet potatoes. In my mind, rice cereal and banana are very basic foods and now I am worried that he is going to have severe food allergies. What are the other food similar to sweet potatoes that I can try? My older son was allergic to dairy, eggs and nuts but he could eat rice cereal and bananas with no problem when he was this age. Anyone dealt with this before? Thanks.

What can I do next?

I dealt with food allergies, and I would start by trying the rice cereal alone. Typically, rice is very hypoallergenic, and the allergy may be only to the banana.

If you need other types of cereals to try, Whole foods has a selection of hypoallergenic baby foods.

Interesting. Have you looked at the ingredients in the rice cereal to see if anything might connect with the banana? I just introduced sweet potato and banana to my 5 mo old and he took to both of them well. Today we are going to try carrot. Carrots and peas may be a good choice. Also, you can try making your baby food at home. Just steam the veggie or fruit until soft and puree in a processor or blender. I suggest buying organic veggies and fruits only. The very first time I gave my son banana food from a gerber jar, he sneezed 4 times in a row so I was convinced he was allergic. Then I made it myself with a banana from Whole Foods and he ate it just fine. Since then, I've been feeding him baby food that I make at home. I only feed him solids once a day and only give him about half an ounce. Have you tried oatmeal or barley to replace the rice cereal? Avocado may be a good choice for baby food as well. My sister is allergic to banana. As soon as she eats it, her tongue and throat start itching. Same thing with orange juice and kiwi.

You might call your ped or an allergist if they can't help and find out what foods are in the same "group" as rice and/or bananas. I know you probably know if you have another allergic child (as I do and also have a dog who's very food allergic) that when they do the allergy panels, there are "groups" of foods they say to avoid if your're allergic to one...

This is also a dumb ques probably, but you aren't giving him the rice cereal w/fruit in it?? I know they make some w/the fruit in already.

When I started my daughter on cereal, she had an allergic reaction to the Oatmeal but was fine with the other cereals. I would try a different kind for the time being and give the rice cereal a try again in a few weeks. I waited about 3-4 weeks and then gave her the Oatmeal again and then she was fine with it. If he is still having a reaction after a month or so, then I would suggest asking the pedi about it.

I would try a different fruit like applesauce or try some veggies. My daughter loved squash and carrots. I'm not sure if the organic bananas would make a difference or not, but I would think waiting several weeks and trying again would be the best idea. Best of luck!
