At this age go with a lightweight fleece one like from LLBEAN,REI, etc..

When older and actually plays in the snow go with Columbia if you can afford it.

I like Once Upon A Child, too. Got an adorable one-piece snowsuit there last year for my infant daughter, and it was only $6. Also, you might check out Saver's or Value Thrift. I found a snowpant/winter jacket suit for my now-almost-18-month-old at Saver's for less than $5 about a month ago...

I believe in one piece snowsuits now that I've had them for my daughter for the last several years. Easy to get in and out of and warm. I buy mostly inexpensive clothes for her otherwise, but buy her one-piece at REI. They are fairly expensive but so nice and warm. She is six now and last winter most of the kids at school wore just jackets and she wore her pretty pink one-piece suit and was always warm.

Target has $12.99 snowpants and $26.99 4 jackets in 1. I usually shop e-bay and you can find some jacket and snowpants sets for under $40 including shipping.

Try Once Upon a Child. Their stuff is always nice and usually reasonably priced.
If you happen to be in the Burnsville area sometime, there is a thrift store called Unique that I swear by! I buy all my DD's clothes there because they are super cheap and usually have really nice stuff there! I found a practically brand new REI winter jacket there for DD for $4!!!!!

I like the one piece snowsuits to play in the snow or if you'll be outside for a bit but it is so nice to have a jacket/coat to wear if you're going to be in and out...much easier on/off. I bought a Columbia teconite jacket/snowpant set for my little guy on eBay the last 3 winters..they aren't bulky but are warm and long lasting...the ones we used second hand were in great shape and we passed them on to others. I remember putting out the same request on Mamasource when he was 1! :)

I was just at Burlington Coat Factory this morning looking for the same items. They have alot to choose from both 1 piece and 2 piece sets and they are VERY reasonably priced.
Kohls also has some to choose from, mostly nice winter coats though. They have some 2 piece sets but I didn't see any snow pants (that didn't come with a jacket) which is kind of a bummer b/c I found the cutest jacket there for my daughter but now I'm having trouble finding snow pants because the coat is blue and green, all I can find are pink and purple snow pants!! Grr!! If you come across a place that has white snow pants LET ME KNOW!!
Gap, Gymboree, Childrens Place and all other kids stores have nothing or very limited to choose from. Those places mostly carry the fancy pea coats or dress coats. You could also try Penny's or Sears. I will be trying there next!

I have always ordered outwear for my children from L.L. Bean. It is great quality, relatively affordable, and when your kids get bigger, will last a couple winters. Their boots, scarves, hats and mittens are great as well. I love being able to shop online or from a their catalog--no running around!

For a one year old, I'd buy a snow suit. Much easier than dealing with two separate pieces. Lands End and LL Bean make really good ones.

In future winters, I'd go with Lands End. I look for sales at the end of winter to buy jackets for my kids, and Lands End jackets are always really warm and well-made. We once bought a Nike jacket that was a huge waste of money because it wasn't waterproof (?!), and when it snowed the jacket became soaking wet.

For snowpants, I think Target is fine. Buy early each winter, though, because they sell out quickly.

S.,

I've had some luck at the Lands End Inlet/Outlet with kids clothes. They are hit or miss for sizes or colors, but the quality is good and so is the price!

I've found that a one piece snowsuit works great for the younger ages, so you may want to think about when he will wear the snow gear, and what will work best for you. When they are not walking, and just being pulled in a sled, or carried, not having the jacket ride up is kind of nice.

Also, garage sales or Once Upon a Child are great for little babies/toddlers because the kids wear the winter stuff for such a short amount of time, and they don't really get worn out since they are not rough housing around like bigger kids. I've bought used stuff for my boys as well.

I bought both snowpants and winter coat from Gap last year and really liked them. They were very well made and had lots of little extra features that made them worth the extra cost. Snap closures around the ankles underneath so snow wouldn't go up the legs, etc. Boots from Stride Rite were great too. He has outgrown them now but I am going back to Gap to buy the ones he will need for this year!
