When to Remove Guard Rails from Bed?

My daughter turned 4 in January and has been in a big bed since she was 2 years old (her choice - refused to sleep in crib). We still have her guard rails on her bed. I am curious to know at what age do you remove the guard rails? She takes naps in our bed, and has never fallen off and in her bed, she always seems to be sleeping in the middle (she has a full size bed).

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

My daughter was very enthusiastic to remove the rails. Her only concern was how she was going to get all her stuffed animals to stay on the bed....Priorities! It's been a few days since we removed them and all is well. Thanks to all the moms who offered advice and support.

I never had rails on my son's bed. His crib converted to a toddler bed, but it didn't have rails. I just put down a lot of blankets on the floor in case he fell out. He did a few times, but hasn't in a quite a while. I put him in his toddler bed at 2 and 1/2 a year ago.

This is a GREAT question as I have the same question in mind myself. :-) My son is four 1/2 years old and I still have one guard rail on his bed. His bed is against the wall, and I have the rail on the other side. Sometimes at night he rolls against the rail, so perhaps he'll need some more time. He just has a twin bed right now. I'm looking to getting him a full size bed in the near future. My son also takes naps in our bed too! :-) Our kids are alike! HA.
I'll come back on here and see what kind of responses you get so that I may find my answer as well. Take care and many blessings to you and your family!

Hi T.:

I have a 4-year old son and he also has a double bed. We finally took off the guard rail a few months ago when we put his mattress into a captain's bed (drawers underneath). I was scared to death because the bed is so high off the ground. But he actually insisted that he was a "big boy" and didn't need it. He did fall out once (I made sure both sides of the bed are clear from all toys, furniture, etc. so that when he did fall, he did not get hurt. It sounds like your daughter is ready from your description. It's usually us Moms who are not ready :-)

My son was about 2 1/2. He had been sleeping in a twin mattress and box on the floor since he was 18 months. I noticed he was not a big mover.

We moved when my boy was 3 1/2 and when I was setting up his bed I asked him if he wanted the rail up. He said no and he's never fallen out. I guess I left it up to him! Good luck,

My daughters were both done with guard rails within a few weeks of moving to a big bed around age 3 and 2 (my youngest fell off a couple of times but hated the rails so whatever, they learn fast that way. Sounds like she's ready, take 'em off it'll be a lot more convenient for everybody.

Our daughter has been in a full size bed since 23 months of age (her choice). On her third birthday I asked her if she was ready to have the bed rails removed and she said yes. She has so far only fallen out of bed once and that was three months after having removed them.
