When Is It Safe....?

I can't remember for the life of me at what age we gave a pillow and a blanket to my older son. Does anyone know at what age it is safe for children to sleep with pillows/blankets/stuffed animals? My son is now a year old...is that still too young?

What can I do next?

If he can roll away from the blanket & pillow to not suffocate, then he is old enough for them. I have not heard of any SIDS cases after 1 year. My son started sleeping with a small pillow at about 18 months, but before that, he ALWAYS fell asleep with his face shoved into the corner of the crib (bumber on). Neither of my kids kept blankets on them until they were about 3. He might not really want a pillow yet, but he'd be fine with one.

Isn't it funny how you forget things from one baby to the next? I'm having my fourth and for the life of me, I can't remember how old the first three were when they started sleeping with a pillow, though if pressed to guess I'd probably say somewhere between a year and 18 months. Glad you asked, and glad others had answers for you!

I think that most pediatricians tell you to wait until at least 2 yrs for a pillow. My older son is about to turn 2, but he still moves around too much when he sleeps for it to even matter if there were pillow. I started letting him sleep with a crocheted blanket and 1 or 2 stuffed animals (without any ribbons or buttons) at about 1 yr. I didn't switch him to a regular solid fabric blanket until about 22 months. While I would follow the guidelines, I think that you should partly base your decision to use or not use those things based on your own child's abilities. Every kid matures differently.

I usually let my kids have a pillow and teddy around age one. Usually when they can sit up in bed by themselves and stand. I just think they are more comfortable. And then we put them in a toddler bed around 20 months old, so the pillow in the crib gets them used to the idea of a real bed.

I have a 18 month old and she sleeps with a stuffed animal and blanket but I still have not given her a pillow. She still moves around too much for it to matter!

My daughter just turned 2 in march and she is now sleeping with a blanket (& stuffed animal sometimes) but I think it depends on the kid. She use to move around to much and would end up under the blanket so i waited and tried it every couple of weeks starting when she was 18m to see what happened and just recently she started staying out fm under them. i think 1 is a little to early but then again it depends on the kid.

I would research sudden infant death syndrom. I think I gave my kid one when he was in a big bed 2+. nothing while in crib--no bumper pads or anything they can roll over on and not know when it was important to roll off.

With both my sons, I let them use a blanket at 1. I started my first son with pillow and blanket at 18 months. He did not move around a whole lot in his sleep and all. I let my second have a pillow with the blanket at 2 as he did move around a lot to the point where the doctor told us to take the crib bumpers off as he could suffocate in them. I would just use your best judgement on when you think your child is ready, but I would not use a pillow until at least 18 months of age.

Iwoudsayif yourbaby iswalking he'sprobably ok.I know the risk of sids greatly reduces after they hit a year old.If he can pick up things and move them such as trying to ift up his shirt or play with toys i'd think he'd be safe.
