When Did You Find Out You Had Twins?

Ladies,

I am just about 10 weeks pregnant. I met with my midwife and I am measuring further along than my dates, which can be an error in dates or twins. I know for a fact my dates are correct.
I am wondering, when did you find out you had twins? Was your pregnancy much different than single child pregnancy?

I had an ultrasound done by the midwife, but she only saw one. She reminded me that she is not an ultrasound tech (she was having a hard time just getting a picture of the one) and one can be hiding.

Please share your experience.

Thanks!

I was 6 weeks pregnant and seeing a fertility specialist when I found out I was having triplets, but I had a transvaginal ultrasound where they put it up into you. But at the time there was a chance I could have been carrying 6.

If you do happen to be having twins let me know. I belong to the Monroe County Mothers of Multiples a support group for moms of twins, triplets and more and I can put you in contact with your local support group. www.mcmom.org

Someone stated that their doctor said you are usually really sick with twins. Not true. Depends on the person. I was not sick a day of my triplet or singleton pregnancies.

I have heard that measurements aren't truly accurate until later on in pregnancy (3rd trimester). I measured big the whole time with my 2nd pregnancy. I had an ultrasound early on b/c there was a question of twins for me, but there was only one in there. If you are concerned, go see an ultrasound tech. Good luck!

I waited until 11 weeks to go to the doc with my second pregnancy. I figure there's no point, if you're doing everything right, to go unless you are sure to hear the heartbeat. I knew I was accurate with my dates and was measuring big. I came back the next day for an us. My hubbie was out of town so my girlfriend went with me. Thank God I don't think I could have driven. I was in shock. It's something to see two little heads on the screen. The twins are happy and healthy. A very uneventful pregnancy. Good Luck- make sure you let us know your results. I hope it turns out like you want.

I found out I was having twins @ my 10 week ultrasound. I had one done because my doctor did not pick up a heartbeat. We about died! I was much more tired early in the pregnancy, a lot more emotional & even felt a little car sick on long drives. When I took my pregnancy test the day I was supposed to start my period the positive line was very dark - my postitive pregnancy test line for my first pregnancy was very light that early in the stage. I guess I am lucky that I didn't have any morning sickness. The doctor said usually you are very sick w/ twins.

Hi E..
I found out we were having twins at 7 weeks. I started bleeding so my husband and I went to the er (it was the saturday before christmas and my doc was out) thinking I was having a miscareage. After hours of being there they found out thur ultrasound it was twins and everything was fine. I bled for 4 weeks! My pregnacy did start out different. I was in maturnity clothes at 7 weeks and my husband joked with me that I was pregnant with twins. Come to find out I was. My twins are now 10 weeks old and healthy! Good luck and I hope it is twins. They are great!

I was, and still am measuring big... I will be 19 weeks tomorrow, but my 10 week ultrasound showed one baby. I will have another ultrasound next wednesday. My Ob/Gyn and my midwife both asked me if twins run in my family (turns out I have uncles on my dad's side that are twins, fraternal I believe). But while my midwife wanted to wait until 20 weeks and still was thinking I am kinda big, the Ob/Gyn said "oh, right where it should be" I have gottent that response for my first 3 pregnancies, always right on! But I don't know why she went from saying I am big, to being right on (the ob) when my midwife taught me how to find the fundus and where abouts it ought to be. I knew at my last appointment I was about 3-5 weeks larger than should be. Oh well. I think I am only having one, by the amount of activity, so if there is more than one next week, I would be surprised!

(funny I posted a very simular question a while ago, but had no resposes... :( )

THat early in a pregnancy I always measured off the charts. I wouldn't be concerned yet. I had big babies (10#) and the charts are made for 7-8 pound babies.

I was only 6-7 weeks along. But due to my previous pregnancies my doctor set up an ultrsound appointment. At 6 months I was starting to grow out of my maternity clothes-they were getting a little snug around the waist. Things went pretty much like a single baby pregnancy.

Well, I was 9 weeks along and measuring big so they did an u/s and sure enough, thre were two in there.
But you could still be just measuring big, it happens. I would wait and see if you can get another u/c done just to be sure.
But congrats on your new addition(s)!

Just so you don't get your hopes up too soon, I measured large with both of my pregnancies and only had 1 each time. By the time I had my first check up at 8 weeks, I was already measuring at 12 weeks. I, too, was sure of my dates. This went on the entire pregnancy. Turns out I just had big boys!

FYI- I measured big until about 37 weeks. They thought I was going to have a big baby. Isabel was 6lbs 6 ounces. She was just laying funny so that the measurements were off.

When I was having twins they weren't detected at the 8 week untrasound, but detected on the 11 week ultrasound. Then my midwife kicked me out...LOL Most midwives will not handle a high risk twin pregnancy. No matter how healthy and carefree your twin pregnancy may be, it is considered high risk.
It was very different from the start. More nausea, more tired, more everything including dr appointments....be very careful what you pray for. I have have 2 sets of twins. I'm wondering what this new pregnancy holds! (4 kids, 9 pregnancies...lotsa experience with everything..)

Hi E. -

I have triplets...my doc thought my date was off at ten weeks. She ordered us an ultrasound, where the tech saw the three of them immediately (he almost fell off his stool).

You should definitely have an ultrasound by someone who is qualified. It's very important to know if they are in one sack or not.

One note of caution: pre-term labor is much more likely in multiple births, so if you are able to stay at home, you should stay off your feet as much as you can.

Good luck!
Dana

I had an ultrasound at 6 weeks and they were able to identify that I was having twins.

If you are concerned, or really just want to know, call your OB/GYN and ask to come in. I'm sure they can do another ultrasound for you. I don't think there is really another way to tell.

Congrats either way!
