What Size Shoe to Buy?

Hi! I got a great response the last time I was on so I thought I'd try again.

My little guy just turned six months old. I showed my husband John Deere's Johnny Poppers Fuzzy Wuzzy boots that were featured in American Baby (Nov. 2008). (We are a die hard John Deere family!) They have discontinued the shoe and only go up to size 3. My delimma is should I get the size 3 or get the other Johnny Poppers that come in a 4. I measured his foot and it's 4 inches!! (He's got big feet!) I just want to make sure that these boots will last a while, that's all.

We're hoping that these will stay on his feet better than the slippers. He seems to bounce right out of those! :)

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Thank you for all your help. I was most concerned about getting "shoes" too small rather than too big. Since the largest size they come in is 3 I couldn't go up a size, just in case. Thanks for the information on Stirde rite. I printed off the measurement finder and will double check to make sure that I'm not getting "shoes" too small.

The "shoe" is one of those slipper type shoes. They have PVC grip soles for traction with dimples, so I assume that they are not hard soled. I know that he'll just be using them as show for now....but they are soooo cute!! :) Go John Deere!

hm.
i dont know anything about the shoes you are looking at... i just wanted to note that shoes for a baby that isnt walking arent a real good idea...
target has some really cute slippers right now that have a giraffe print on them - they are cute, and they arent hard soled, so they wont interfere with walking. what you should never do is buy shoes that are too small. kids grow so fast, and its especially when you buy something that is just about right, they grow out of it. i try to stay ahead of my son's growth! LOL.
nothing hard soled for a beginner walker. they need to feel and grip the ground.

I don't think shoe sizes go in true inches. You can either look on line for a size chart or take him to you local shoe store and have his foot measured. make sure they check if he needs wide width.

According to this website you need a size 3 for a 4 inch foot size, 3.5 for 4 1/6 inch foot, size 4 for a 4 1/3 inch foot. You can check out the chart for yourself at the above listed website. Good luck!

I'm assuming that he is not walking since he is 6 months old. You don't need shoes at all at this age. Just put really warm socks, or two, on him. If you just want them for looks/warmth, it doesn't matter if they are little bit too big. I've heard that kids feet grow about 1/2 a size every 3 months until they are 2 or 3 (I can't remember which) years old and then they slow down. Kids learn to walk/move quicker in bare feet because they can feel more, so they aren't needed inside - just my 2 cents :).

I don't think inches necessarily corrolate to sizes. You can easily measure his feet--striderite.com has a shoe sizing chart you can print off to measure your son's feet. Or you could pop him onto the shoe sizing mat at Target. I agree with PPs in that babies' shoes are more for "show" than anything else. When he starts crawling or learning to stand, I'd switch to something that lets him "feel" the ground better, like Robeez, Bobux, or pre-walking Stride Rites.

I'd suggest stopping at a shoe store like Famous Footwear to have his foot measured.

Also, if you are buying winter boots, I wouldn't buy too big of a size. I'd buy the size that fits him now for him ( & you to enjoy). Your son will be in another size of shoe by summer, once he is walking. You mentioned you want the boots to last awhile - but if your son is anything like mine - he won't be in the same boots next year.

Hi J.! I don't know if this comparison helps but when my daughter was 9 months she was a size 4.
Can you buy both sizes and return the one that doesn't fit?
My son is a die hard John Deere fan too:) I am forever tripping over tractors!
