HI everyone~ This is day#2 for me. I don't know if it is a cold and/or allergies, but this is driving me crazy. I am sooooo congested and my poor ears are clogged. What meds are safe to take while breastfeeding? I need some quick relief? Can I use a vicks vapor inhaler?
Thanks to any responses!

My OB okay'd me to use Zyrtec-D because I have really bad allergies: runny nose, itchy watery eyes, sneezing, and asthma when it gets really bad.

Do not take any antihistamines (sp?) because while they are safe for you and baby they could dry up your milk supply. I had clogged ears for weeks, so I feel your pain!

My doctor told me that I could take Sudafed (plain without any combined/added treatment) but to take it sparingly as it could dry up milk supply if taken regularly. I was so scared of drying up my milk, I didn't risk taking the Sudafed. With this said, the sudafed may not affect your milk supply at all! But I'd rather be uncomfortable with a stuffy head and ears than risk drying up my milk supply and having a fussy baby.

I did use the netti-pot nasal cleanse and while it didn't cure me it did help. Also, I recently read on Kellymom.com that drinking Fenugreek tea helps with head congestion. I haven't tried this, but it's worth a shot.

It's important to take care of yourself so that you can be a better mom for your baby!

Try a neti pot and saline nasal spray, that will clean you right out without any potentially harmful medications.

Hi B.,

The main thing you want to stay away from is any antihistamine medications....anything that will dry up your snot will unfortunately also dry up your milk!

The vapor inhaler should be fine.

I second the neti pot! Use it every four hours until you notice an improvement then twice a day until you're all clear! Hope you feel better soon!

I am currently breastfeeding my 3 1/2 month old precious boy and when I got stuffy I used some saline nose drops. My doctor suggested mucinex, but I never used it. I hope you start to feel better soon! All the best!

I didn't read the other responses but you should really call your ob doctor. He is the one who would really have safe advice for safe meds for you in the month of pregnancy you are in. Good luck!
