Trying to Find a Great OBGYN & Doula or Midwife in Northwest Indiana

I hoping someone could recommend a fantastic supportive OBGYN in nw IN. I live in Hammond but I'm willing to travel a bit for the right Dr. We're trying to get pregnant and I'd like to find a Dr. that would be nurturing and supportive of natural childbirth. I'm also interested in looking into a doula or midwife that would work with a Dr. (I'm not entirely certain how that whole aspect works.) I had a horrible experience with my last Dr. that delivered our daughter and I'd like a much more positive, less stressful experience next time. Any help would be appreciated! Thanks!

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Thank you everyone for your suggestions! Some of you mentioned Crown Point OB. Is this the one on Lincoln Hwy. or Burrell Dr.? My insurance will cover just about any hospital in the area including St. Anthony's, & Community. A search through my network resulted in over 200 doctors! That's why I'm so overwhelmed on where to go. But thanks again and I'm still open to any other suggestions and opinions!

I like Crown Point OB/Gyn and they have a midwife. Louise Albrecht is a great doula, she trains them, so she knows her stuff and can go to any of the hospitals. She lives in Munster. Email me for her info. ____@____.com
If you use a midwife you usually don't need a doula.

Crown Point Ob/Gyn is incredible. That may be farther than you want to go, they practice at St. Anthony's. There is a mid wife on their team and she is wonderful.

Crown Point Ob/Gyn, they have two midwives on staff that are AWESOME! I go to Sheryl Behnke, she delivered both of my sons.

I highly recommend Dr. Varsh Desai in Munster. My sister had very difficult pregnancies and Dr. Desai was wonderful. When I got pregnant with my first daughter I was 36 years old (my 2nd at 40). So, of course, I was considered high risk. Dr. Desai was amazing. Very insightful and informative without being frightening. I had difficulties with both birth and she was awesome. And the staff at both her office and Community Hospital were excellent.

It probably will depend on what hospital your insurance will cover. If you can get to St. Anthony's in Crown Point or St. Mary's in Hobart - do it! They are much more supportive of natural childbirth. I delivered my first at Community, and while my labor and hospital stay were both horrible experiences, I absolutely loved my OB, Dr. Hamburg. Very supportive and reassuring. Unfortunately, he only works out of Community, and I can't bring myself to go back there.

I'm 36 weeks along with my second, and will deliver at St. Anthony's. I also recommend Crown Point OB, like the other posters. The midwives are wonderful, and they can help you with lots of resources for doulas and support.

You might also want to do a search for the C.H.O.I.C.E.S. chapter in Hebron. They are a natural childbirth/attachment parenting support group with tons of resources for doulas and midwives.

hi! i would like to recommend my obgyn. his name is Dr. Doug Chung, and he has been in practice for years, he actually delivered my husband believe it or not. he works out of community hospital in munster, in. and the facility there is so nice. his number is ###-###-####
i have had 2 kids w/ him, a boy and a girl. if you are looking for someone smart and will work w/ you, then you should check him out. i was 118lbs. when i got pregnant w/ my 1st child, a girl. when i delivered her the dr. was concerned that she was going to be too big for me to push out and was considering a c-section. he had known from earlier conversations that i didn't want one unless necessary. she was 8lb. 9oz. when she came out. he is a great dr.
the same w/ my son my 2nd child he was 9lbs. 4oz when he came out. he just worked w/ me and helped me have them naturally so i didn't need a c-section.
i believe he is also on some board of staff there like the head obgyn, he is very, very good. he does come highly recommened!
good luck w/ it and keep me up to date if you decide on him.

i live in southeast chicago and for my first 2 children i used dr van arsdale out of northwestern hospital....he was great and the wait in the office was very minimal if i really ever waited. i would have gone to him again with my newest baby, but my insurance changed and they didn't take it at northwestern. but i was blessed to find dr van woert who works out of community hospital and the family wellness center in munster. even thought its a drive for me, i am happy to go to someone i trust. he helped me through a miscarriage and my recent pregnancy which gave me my beautiful daughter. he is easy to talk to and seems genuinely concerned with my wellbeing...his staff is also awesome. good luck and if you need any more info you can message me. by the way community hospital is rated one of the 50 best hospitals in the u.s.a. and during my stay there i was very happy with all aspects of the hospital.
