Hi my son was diagnosed with reflux at a little over a year. Things were going great, until 6 months later, and the dr. decided it was time to take him off his medicication. Now he started vomiting again, not sleeping, he is just miserable. Can anyone give me any advice on this.

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Hi again, Thanks everyone for your tips and support. Today was a horrible day he basically got sick all day. I am waiting for a call from the doc. He has an appt in a few days, but I am getting worried now, don't want him to dehydrate. Anyway I guess the doc thought since his symptoms were resolved he didn't need the medication anymore, they say most children outgrow it by his age. I just feel so bad for him, because right now he's not my happy little boy.

hi W.-
what area do you live in? my son had reflux and i can recommend a great pediatric gastro-intestinal doc. even if you do not live in the area i do, maybe you can call him for advice? he is very renowned and has been published, unless you are very happy with your doc...this one is not a pediatrician only (altho he is), but specializes in gastro...if you are interested, let me know...

my little brother had reflux. i dont know why they would take him off of the medicine unless they feared he would form some kind of resistance/immunity to the medicine. anyway i know she used to put cereal in his bottle to keep the fluid heavy in his stomach i know u usually shouldnt put food in a bottle but in this case it worked. but i just saw that u said your baby is older so im not sure, sorry

Hi there!! I feel your pain :) My son was diagnosed with GERD when he was only 3 months, and he had it from day one. He's been on different medications that worked at first, then wore off....
My trick? My son is a grazer...he eats all day, not just meals. I'm the same way, but I don't have reflux (my metabolism just can't take just the 3 meals a day). So, what I do, is give my son AT THE MOST 3 oz of liquid at a time. Usually, I give this with a graham cracker or something of that sort. You can work up to 5 oz of liquid, but I found that 3 oz was working for us. That's enough for him to feel satisfied, and not enough that he's going to spit it all back up. I do this very frequently thru the day, as it's a "snack." I'm sure if you try this, your child won't be very happy, since it's not much to eat. But, if you wait at least 10 mins to give him more, it should work. It did wonders for us.
Basically, my son gets a lot of meals.....3 main meals (very small) that I actually break up into snacks as well. For instance, I will make him pb+j, and only give him half of the sandwich with 3 oz of milk. 10-20 mins later, I will give him the other half of the sandwich with some applesauce (or milk). Breaking it up helps him to not have too much in his tummy to spit back up, and he's getting the same amount of nutrition, just more often then most. I grew up this way, only because big meals didn't satisfy me. So, it's easy for me to do it with my son. That way, he doesn't see me eating so much, or longer than him.
Just a suggestion....hope you try it!!

If things were going good while he was in the medicine, why did the doctor take him off?? I would put him back on the medicine. I dont know anything about reflux. Is there a reason why your son cant take the medicine????

I feel your pain exactly. When my oldest son was 3 months old we discovered that the flasp that covered his stomach to separate his stomach from the esophagus would not close all the way. Since the flasp didn't work, there was nothing stopping his food, drink, anything from emptying into his throat at any time. We dealt with the constant acid, food, formula, it was terrible. Then my mom told me a trick they use with adult acid reflux patients (My Step-dad). It's called mixing baking soda with water. SERIOUSLY!!
mix 1 tbsp (yes tablespoon) of baking soda with 4 oz of water. It isn't be best tasting, but eventually they will drink it. Just make sure you keep mixing it up as the baking soda is heaiver than the water and will settle to the bottom.
After drank, it often gives a burp effect...this is a good thing. The baking soda will coat the throat from the burp as well as when it was drank and releives pain from the reflux acid and acid from the stomach itself. The only thing you have to be careful of is don't do it more than 2-3 times a day, as baking soda is loaded with sodium and could case issues there. BUT it is GREAT as a once a day helper, especially before bedtime.
I used this on my son from the time he was 4-5 months until he was almost 2 years. It is GREAT!! He finally got a clean bill from the doc about the flasp, so I don't have to do it once in a while when he has saucey foods.
P.S. This is also great for kids that are sick and have the dry heaves, it helps the throat ease from the puking and stomach acid.
P.S.S. I have used this myself and testify with it, especially when you are pregnant and have the morning sickness. Having drank this MANY times, I know the soothing feeling and was so greatful my mom told me so that my son didn't have to go through everything in so much pain.

Try enfamil AR it helps keep in in the tummy! which will help with the sleep issue. Also get a second opinion. I switched Doctors when my son was 9 months because i did not agree with what they said to me. Maybe its time to find a Doc you can trust.

I would check with a gastrointerologist, there has to be some relief for your son. I suffer reflux also and I know the feeling. Have you used tums or maalox? There has to be something for him, I wish you luck and if his Dr doesn;t agree find another Dr.
