Toddler Bed or Full Bed?????

My son will be two the 30th of this month and we have another baby due in February. My question is should we buy a toddler bed or just put him into the full size bed that we already have with the net side rails? He is still in the crib and has never attempted to climb out. I am just confused on what to do ...part of me thinks that the full bed may be too big for him in the begining.

What can I do next?

My son just recently turned 2 and has been in a twin bed now for bout 6 months. He does really well with it. I never put him in a toddler bed. The only problem we have is since he is no longer in his crib its hard to keep him in bed to go to sleep so we have to keep sending him back to bed. Which that will change in due time. I just saw no point in spending money on a toddler bed and then turning around and getting a big bed for him to sleep in. I did the toddler bed with my 3 year old and he did well with the transfer too but his toddler bed was worn down and I didnt want to use it with my 2 year old and didnt want to buy a new one. There was no big advantage if you ask me to getting a toddler bed. Hope this helps.

I don't know that there is any advantage to a toddler bed except that it is lower to the ground and usually has higher head and foot boards. Combined with the rails this keeps them from falling out. We moved both our children into toddler beds around 20 months. We did not have a problem transitioning from crib to toddler bed and our son had no problem transitioning to a twin bed. If you don't want to spend the money on a toddler bed (sorry I just gave my son's away) then I like the idea of putting the twin mattress on the floor. The mattresses these days are so thick that we ended up putting the box springs on the floor under the bed frame and then put the mattress inside the bed frame for our son. Otherwise he would have been about 3 feet off the floor.

Good luck,

C

My 2yo went from her crib to a twin bed. The downside is that she can climb out of bed and escape bed time :) I suggest getting a baby gate to put at his door so he can't run around the house while you are sleeping. Since you already have a twin bed, I say try it first with the bed rail and if you can't get him to accept the bed then you could try the toddler bed. Congrats on your new baby

My advice is to transition him to a full size bed. With my older son (he was 2-1/2 at the time) I used a toddler bed first and then a full size bed. It was a nightmare for him to have to adjust to two different beds.

We put our daughter directly into a full bed from a crib at 22 months. She had the rails at first for her to get used to it but a couple months later we took them down & she did just fine. No problems. I would recommend getting a stepstool for him to climb up & down though.

Buy the full size mattress and put it on the floor. Then, when you think that he's ready for the height of the bed, put the mattress on the bed. That said, my daughter, who will be 2 on the 20th, has been in a twin bed for about 1 month now. We were co-cleeping and have been transitioning her for a couple of months. We tried the toddler bed and it didn't work. She has been doing really well with the twin.

It depends on the child. When I was younger I got a twin size waterbed at age 1, and my son I got him a twin size race car bed when he turned 1. He loved it soo much and still does... He won't sleep anywhere but it. However my younger son is now 18months and still in the crib and I am not sure what I would do about changing his... he is so stubborn and hard to get to bed that I think he should stay in his crib a little longer
