Still Fighting Thrush....

HI, I posted a while ago and got some great ideas to battle the nasty case of thrush that my daughter has, however, after two months of life, she still has a nasty thrush infection. I am no longer breast feeding (which in this case helps) as I have returned to work. We have tried Nystatin, gentian violet, and we are currently trying difulcan n(which I believe is upsetting our little girls stomach. We even took her to a naturopathic physician who placed her on some probiotics and an antifungal. None of this has worked, her little mouth is still coated with thrush. I have heard that we can try grapfruit seed extract. Has anyone used this treatment? If so how much did you dissolve in water and how often did you apply it? Also is it safe to use with diflucan. My pediatrician does not know anything about grapfruit seed extract as it is a natural remedy. I also heard coconut milk? I am also open to other suggestions if anyone has any. We are very frustrated with this, and hope to get rid of it soon!

What can I do next?

My son had the same problem and then had to get his liver tested because of the high potency of the diflucan - finally another ped told me to put nystatin cream ON his tongue with a baby toothbrush - he told me the pharmaacy would think it was crazy but to do it - it worked! I'd try that.

My daughter (now 10-1/2 months) had a moderate case of thrush for quite a while, and it turned out that we couldn't use nystatin because *I* was allergic to it. We used a combination of things...gentian violet (on her tongue and my nipples), sterilizing the bottles/pacifiers/breast pump parts daily, and finally putting *me* on oral diflucan. The diflucan got rid of the yeast in/on my breasts and also passed to her in the breast milk. That was what finally got rid of both her thrush and her yeast diaper rash when she was about 6 or 7 months old. Maybe you could try that if you're still pumping and giving her breast milk?

Hi there. It's sounds like you're doing a great job with looking for different ways to help your baby. Is there any way you could go back to breastfeeding? If you've only just stopped I think it's possible to start again for a week or two afterwards. (Check with the La Leche League) Maybe pump at work? Formula has added sugars (corn syrup usually) which I'm sure you know, can contribute to yeast/fungal overgrowth. Breastmilk also naturally supports proper GI balance which is important in your situation. Best of luck!

That's alot of stuff for her little body to try and assimilate. Try getting her checked at a good family chiropractor. Sounds like she has some basic immune system stuff that could be connected to her birth process. You have nothing to lose (except the thrush) and everything to gain, natural support without an army of drugs that will only address the sym[toms, apparently not the cause of the thrush. Good Luck ! I have 4 kids and they (and I) get checked regularly.

Hi,
Did your doctor say that she still has thrush even after you have treated it? The reason why I as is because my now 6 month old had thrush pretty bad. We used a huge thing of Nystatin and then one treatment of the gentian violet. I healed but his mouth continued to be white inside. The doctor recently scraped some of it off inside his mouth. He is fine now and I no longer have sores from thrush but his mouth still remains white. I am sure you know what you are doing but just thought I would tell you. I thought for a long time that he still had thrush. Good luck!

Ask your naturopathic doctor about Glutamine Powder and if that would be good to try. Good luck! Natural remedies are always the best route to go if you can find one.

Hi there,

I used grapefruit seed extract when my son had thrush (and I had to use it too b/c I was still nursing), however he was a little older and I was able to put it in juice... I don't know if formula would mask the bitterness of it. My bottle says adults 5-15 drops 1-3 times daily and for kids 1-3 drops , 1-2 times daily. It tends to settle at the bottom of the liquid if you don't just "chug it," so I would recommend using 1 drop at first in a small bottle first (formula I assume) to see how she does with that, then maybe increase the drops but keep the same amount of formula so she doesn't get all the bitterness in the bottom.

Hope it works for you as well as it did for us! It was cleared up in a few short days, if I remember correctly.

Hi K.,

My girl had thrush and our pediatrician told us it would just go away on its own, and it did. Often despite treatment, thrush re-occurs or is difficult to erradicate. If your child is eating OK, then just let it go away on its own.

Have you ever switched her formula? My infant had thrush and we tried our best to get rid of it with medicine and maybe it was a coincidence, but when we switched his formula it finally went away. I know they say that it is impossible that it could be the formula but I just know what happened with my son and I am completely convinced it had something to do with his reaction to the formula. Let me know how it goes.

I noticed that you are in Manchester. In Concord, there is a place on Hall st. that is fantastic. The link below is about a doctor there that has a son and is a mom first, then a doctor. She is wonderful and I believe she could help you.

She can help you with the particulars on the grapefruit seed as well.

Hello Still Fighting Thrush...
My eight month old suffered from thrush for almost 6 weeks. It can really be awful, I know. I'm sure many people have told you, even your Doctor that you should sterilize EVERYTHING...EVERY TIME! Let me tell you it is a pain in the but, but it worked! Every time she spit out the paci, I gave her a clean one. Every time she had a bottle and stopped feeding I replaced it. I became very driven to remove this fungi that was growing in my daughters mouth. I would rub the nystatin on her paci and her bottle nipples. After I gave her dose I would not feed her for a good half hour to insure that it had settled in her mouth. I also boiled her paci, bottles and nipples every time! It was hard enough finding time to do all this with a 6 year old and a two month old, but I found it worked! After I started doing it within 4-5 days it was gone. I hope this works if you haven't tried already. Good luck.

K.,
I struggled with thrush for over 8 mo with my first DD and 12 mo with my second DD. The only thing that helped for us was the GSE (grapefruit seed extract). For us it worked best if I took the pill form and my daughters took it in through the breast milk. I tried to give GSE directly to my daughter by diluting it to a weakened state and swabbing her mouth with a Q-tip but that did not go well. If you taste it you will see why. Even very diluted it is extremely bitter.

I can look up more from the information our breastfeeding clinic gave to me if you need the recipes. Unfortunately you might have a hard time treating your little girl with it since she cannot digest the pill form at her young age.
