Hi All,

My 5 month old is not accepting bottle for formula feeding. I have read everywhere that we can start using sippy cups. Which one would you recommend is best for his age (5 months). Any suggestions are welcome.

My first daughter would never take a bottle and she did well with the avent sippy cups - the ones that are for 6 months old and have a rubber mouth piece.

My MIL is a Speech Pathologist(30+ years) and she told me that straws and sippy cups are NOT good for speech development. I am an Early Childhood Ed major and also learned the same thing in my Child Development class. I would just skip the sippy cup and go with a regular cup. You can let your child play with an inch of water in the cup for a few days to experiment and get over the novelty of dumping it out. Then you can put just a little liquid in at a time and help the child drink the same way you would help with a bottle. I had my daughter drinking out of a cup at two months.(of course I helped to hold it with her till she was about 10 months, but after that she was fine on her own:)

We really liked the Avent Magic Cup, which my 15 month old still uses (without the handles - we dropped them early on) if she's drinking in the car or loose around the house. The Born Free sippy was also good, but she had a harder time getting a good seal so it was a little messier. It's also a bit more involved to clean (two piece valve).

Good luck!

we had luck early on with soft spouts (nuby makes one, as do others) when my son got a little older, we switched to playtex insulators - have been great, no leaks!!! I know people who like the born free training cup as well...

we went right to the sippy cup with our daughter and she to the ones with a rubber top very well, they had a clear rubbery mouthpiece that fit into a hard plastic screw on part. The problem was that she figured out how to push the rubbery piece in and dump out her juice, so beware. We have a variety of sippy cups now with no real favorites. I hope this advice helps somewhat.

i think it matters more about the tip than the cup. Look for something with a soft tip. It's easier for them to suck on it and it's closest to your breast and the bottle. Good luck.

My husband and I have had 3 natural children and countless foster children and the sippy cup that seemed the best for almost all the children was the Avent bottle to sippy cup combination. It worked extremely well for our littlest ones transitioning to a sippy cup. We started at 4 to 5 months with our little ones. They are a little spendy but hold up very well to washing, muchkins throwing & tossing about! Good luck! B. F.

We used the advent sippy cups, or the playtex cups.

Hi S.,
I started my daughter on a sippy cup around five months, but she really didn't catch on until about 6 months or so. We use a Nuby. It's the kind with a straw and a handle on each side. I have read that the straw is better for speech development... It might not make too much of a difference! But, she was able to use the straw more easily than a regular sippy. It doesn't leak either! The straw has a bite valve, so even the straw doesn't leak. This one works for us.
Good luck!

You made the comment that he wouldn't accept a bottle for formula feeding, does that mean you were breast feeding? If so, he may not like the formula. So transition with breast milk in the bottle. Have your husband or care giver give the bottle for those feedings. If you are weaning from breast to bottle, have them start this process, then as time progresses, you can bottle feed rather than breast, as your son will want the closeness of the breast. You can transition from breast to formula during this process as well. 5 months is a little early to be giving all liquids by sippy cup. Many babies are still bottle/breast feeding at 12 to 18 mo of age. His solid diet will also influence how much he needs to take in. Offer water in the cup, often. Best of luck.

I would second the straw suggestion because I've tried like 10 different kinds of sippy cups, many of them expensive and BPA free, and the ones we used most as a little toddler were the rubbermaid straw bottles even though they wern't BPA free but a safer plastic (#'s 2,4,5 better vs. #3,6,7 bad) or the straw take and toss cups because they had the fewest parts (3 or 2 w/o straw).

Now that he is 2.5 (still a toddler) we mostly used this plastic kids cup from Dutch Brothers coffee (they sell kids drinks) which has just the cup and a cone-shaped lid with a hole at the top for a straw. He doesn't even use the straw but likes the cup. And guess what? It's the only one we can always find all the parts to quickly and it's the only one that has never gotten any mold on it. (Hey, why doesn't someone make a bundle by selling these BPA free and recyclable?)

Klean Kanteen is our 2nd fav -- doesn't mold easily, but not for young ones as they are harder to suck which will impede proper jaw & palate development on an infant.

S.,

We have always liked the Playtex cups that have the double handles on the lid. That way you don't frustrate yourself trying to get the cup to *not* leak, but still have the spout in the middle of the handles.

Whatever you go with make sure the cup has a valve in it so the cups are spill proof, as far as that goes. :)

Hi Shelley, I really like the playtex sippy cup with the handles at first and then after 8 months or so I love the first years cups with a built in valve. These are hard to find but I recently found some at safeway. They are really nice because when you're in a hurry you don't have to be digging through a drawer looking for those tiny valves. These cups work great and they are my favorite of any other and I've tried many (I have 3 kids so I have a whole cabinet full of different brands). The nuby and born free cups with the soft flexible spouts were a problem for me. My son would put it in his mouth and bite it (which opens the valve) and then just let the water run out of his mouth and down his face onto his clothes. It didn't take long for these soft cups to develop a hole from his chewing so liquid would pour out. I don't recommend these at all, although I haven't heard of anyone else with that problem. Hope this helps .. good luck!

I preferred Avent, especially for that age range. You can use the same cup with interchangeable tops. Bottle nipple, and 3 varieties of sippy tops depending on the age. The cheap WalMart soft spout one worked really well too.

S., my son really likes the Born Free sippy cup. An added plus is that when he is teething, the nipple on it is soft and rubbery so he just bites on it for relief. Plus, it is BPA-free. Hope this helps!
