Severe Backache Pain with Second Pregnancy

Hello mamas! I am currently 7 months pregnant with my second child and I am experiencing sever backache pain, mostly in my upper back where your bra strap wraps around. (However, I don't normally wear a bra thourghout the day, so there is nothing binding me there.) I never experienced this kind of back pain with my first pregnancy and only get relief when I lay on my heating pad for 20 mins at a time throughtout the day. (Of course, that is not always an option as I have a toddler son to chase around too!) My sister-n-law says told me that your back is never the same if you have ever had an epidural, which I DID have when my first son was born. Has anyone ever heard this explanation before?? Or has anyone experienced this before with only one pregnancy?? By the way, I am 32 years old, so maybe it is because I am getting older too. Shoot, I just don't know...but having back pain every single day really stinks!!

What can I do next?

First, you always need a good supporting bra and if they are large you can have back pain. Also your body shifts to carry the baby out front , therefore putting more pressure on your spine. Try to stand, sit, walk really tall. Also try stretching exercises like slowly reaching for the ceiling with one hand then the other. Also, rest flat for short periods during the day. Drink plenty of water. Thsi too shall pass.

Have you talked with your doctor? I had two epidurals and have no issues with my back. Although I am not a doctor it could be the baby is on a nerve - I lost all feeling in my right arm during pregnancy and had numbness in a leg and it was all baby placement.

Good luck!

That far up does not sound like epidural pain, but it could be gall bladder. I had back pain that started w/my 1st pg, went away and then had again w/2nd, but did not go away. About a year later I found out I had a gallstone (one big one) and had my gall bladder removed. The back pain went away! And all that time I thought it was my back itself!! Gall bladder pain is mostly on the right side, but can radiate accross!! Anyway, just a thought! Good luck to you!

I had severe back pain (and swelling) with my first when I was 34. Turned out that I had HELLP syndrome and had to have an emergency C-section. If it really hurts, I wouldn't ignore it for sure!

I had really bad back pain after my first son was born, and now that I'm pregnant again I have noticed it's a bit tight again. I started seeing a chiropractor for my back pain when my son was 18 months, and I'm still seeing him as I go through this pregnancy. I can feel a lot of relief after he works on my back, and since I'm pregnant he is mainly giving me a really good massage with a slight adjustment.

If a chiropractor sounds a bit scary have you tried a prenatal massage? I have a friend who had them during her pregnancy, and loved them. I plan on having a few during mine this time.

Back pain every day really sucks. I hope you can find some relief very soon. If you would like to know a little more about the chiropractor I'm seeing just let me know. Good luck.

I had the exact same problem after my first child. Turns out I was having gall bladder attacks. Strange spot for the pains, but that's what it was. I ended up having to have it removed.
You might mention it to your doctor, and see what he recommends.
Good luck!

Hi J.,

It could be a number of things, including a pinched nerve or a rib out of place. I would recommend seeing a physical therapist or maybe a chiropractor or just start with a massage. The muscles around an injury site may just be so tight around the area that it isnt allowing the spine to return to its normal position (though the muscles think they are trying to protect it) Also, You may try ice instead of heat. If it is accute, the ice would decrease the heat and inflammation. Make sure to see your doctor first though!
GOOD LUCK!

the first thing I would do is set up an appointment with Dr. Pam Kendall. She is an amazing chiropractor who specializes in maternity care. This can not only help your current back pain but help you with positioning of your baby and aid in labor and delivery. her contact info is ###-###-#### or ###-###-####

HI. I'm 34 and 7 mths pregnant with my second child. I had the epidural with the first too. My back pain is in my lower back and tailbone. I've been told it's because of the way the baby is laying. The only difference is mine is not all the time. I would really discuss this with your DR. Ask about massagaes and chiropractic care too. Those have helped me greatly. Trust your instincts (sp?). Good Luck!!

J.,

Some other people have already mentioned gall bladder problems. Please ask your doctor to check.

With me, I had severe upper back pains combined with pain under the ribs. The doctor thought it was just the way the baby was positioned. After I had the baby, the pain worsened and they checked for gall bladder problems, but ruled it out.

Turned out that I had an ulcer from being on low dose aspirin throughout my pregnancy. They had to do an endoscopy to figure that out. Had to take 2 months of medication for the ulcer to heal.

I would definitely ask the doctor to check.

Good Luck,
K.

Had this same exact pain with my first. The only relief would be heating pad and not sitting in one spot too long. So I disagree with your sister since I hadn't had an epi yet. I did have some back pain with my second but not as bad. I think it has to do with positioning of the baby. Good luck!
