My 19 year old daughter who loves to read wants a Nook for christmas but I don't know much about them. Can anyone give me their experience with them? Is there a newer version and if so is it better? Any thoughts would be helpful.

What can I do next?

I love my Nook and that I get a free book every Friday (you don't get to select it and you have to remember to download it, but it is free). There is also lots of free and also cheap books available online.
My husband has the Nook color (which is how I got the original Nook, because we can't share as we both read at night). With the Nook color you can also get magazine subscriptions on it and play games ~ my son loves having a big screen to play Angry Birds on.
I love having access to all of these books and magazines, but NOT having them laying around my house.
If you get one get a cover. A friend got one for her son for college (so he could get some of his books on it) and did not get a cover. It was in his bookbag which got kicked on accident. Not good for the Nook...

I have a nook color , LOVE it.
I am getting a Nook Tablet , which is the new one, when the taxes come in.
I can get books not only from barnes and noble but also books a million and other online places that sell books, The kindle is only able to use books from Amazon, they are like Apple they only play nice with themselves. There are 1.8 Million free books on the nook through barnes and noble alone. The customer service through Barnes and noble is AWESOME. I got a defective nook color the first time around, hardware defect wouldn't accept the latest update. Well I took it into B&N , it started acting up while we were there and I took it to the nook specialist , they called the B&N Nook CS line, B&N sent me a new one even thought I bought it from Best Buy and not B&N. They were VERY helpful tried to update it in store.
If someone gave me a Kindle I'd take it in and exchange it for a Nook Tablet That's how much I love my Nook Color.

eta : I can play movies and music on my Nook Color. I have a program called DVD catalyst 4, it converts DVDs to any format that I need to be able to play on hand held devices. It also condenses it, I can fit 8 to 10 hrs of movies on an 8 GB micro SD card , doesn't take up book space and I can just pull it out and put it in my computer and change out movies. The Nook Color is basically a Tablet PC that has been advertised as an e reader. That's why they renamed the new one the Nook Tablet .There's a word app for it, the new one has netflix , hulu , etc .

My daughter bought a Nook Color for me about 8 months ago...I love it!! My husband and I travel a lot and this way I don't have to carry big heavy books with me. I also love the fact that it is backlit so I can read in the dark...my husband tends to sleep later than I do and now I can read in the hotel room without disturbing him or banning myself to the bathroom...lol.
I also play games on my Nook...Angry Birds is one of my favorite time wasters. I would check into the Kindle before making a decision if I were you...I wonder if buying books places other than Barnes and Noble ( The only place you can purchase things with the Nook) might be cheaper. I find that I could actually buy paper back books more cheaply than I have to purchase things on the Nook...so I am not sure it is such a money saver!!

The Nook is basically Barnes&Noble's version of Amazon's Kindle. You set up an account with Barnes&Noble, and you can buy books directly from your Nook. My step-dad has one, and his only complaint is that it's too easy to spend money on books now!! Also, my hubby has a Kindle, and he has actually used it to get books for college. (He's going for his Masters online) I think if she's responsible with her money, and can limit herself on how many books she buys in a month, it's a great gift.

We bought a Kindle for me and a Nook for my son last Christmas. My Kindle works great and now gets library books while my son has had to replace his Nook twice in less than one year. Unless your daughter is very gentle with her things, I would recommend getting the extended service contract on these. Those contracts are usually a total waste of money, but ours has saved us from buying 2 replacement Nooks!
We love that everyone now has gift ideas for our son-- BN gift cards or just send the book straight to his Nook!

I have the original Nook and I love it. there is a website out there http://the-cheap.net/ that documents when books are free or cheap, and consequently I've only bought 2 books for my Nook. I love that I have a ton of books on there and I always have something to read.

One of the reasons I picked the Nook over the Kindle was because I could get library books on it, but since then, at least at our library, you can do that with Kindle, too. If that effects your decision at all.

I got my dad a nook for his birthday, and I like the Kindle fire alot more. They have a new library on the kindle which is awesome, and you can also download movies and tv shows on it. Books are also cheaper on amazon then they are on the nook.

I just purchased one for my husband it isn't the Nook brand I ordered it from Dollargeneral.com it was only $40 on Black Friday it is now on sale for $50 I think and it sells originally for $60. I thought this would be a good place to start and it was in my budget for Christmas this year. It has been my experience the off brand of things are just as good if not better because they want to compete with the big name brands and so far everything we have purchased with a non poplular name brand has been great. Good Luck and Merry Christmas.
