My son's 2nd birthday is on the 24th and my dad was thinking of getting him a scooter. Now, on one hand, I think it would be great because he loves any type of ride-on. On the other hand, he's only two! Has anyone gotten their kids a scooter at age two? I know they make smaller ones, but... Sorry, I know it's a silly question but my son has so many toys already and my husband and I just went out to get him a few things so I hate to tell my dad to buy him something that would be a waste of money. Thanks for your input.

So What Happened?

Just in case anyone should check back... My dad got the scooter and my son LOVES it!! It is the Radio Flyer one and it is so cute. Of course, my 3 yr old daughter kept fighting my son for it, so the morning after my sons birthday party my dad shows up at my house with a pink radio flyer scooter for my daughter! So now I have two lovely scooters, Yay!! Gotta love Grandpa! Thanks for the input Everyone!!

My 2 year old loves his 3 wheeled scooter - especially when his older brothers are on their 2 wheeled ones.

Helmet, long pants, make sure it's a three wheeler (1 in front, 2 in back). He'll love it.

My 2 year old daughter has a scooter and she really likes it. I make her wear a helmet and long pants incase she falls, but she goes so slow that she hardly ever falls. :-) I think one of the reasons she likes it so much is because it has a basket on it so she can carry around her "treasures".

My daughter is 2 1/2 and used a L. scooter that had like 3 wheels this summer, but anytime before that and I wouldn't be so sure. Maybe thats a good gift for christmas, a L. more time!!

My daughter has had a scooter (2 wheels on back) since before she was two. She is a pro by now (almost 3), I don't regret getting it that early. She always wears a helmet though as well.

My son wanted a scooter, since several friends did, around age 2-1/2. He had better balance abilities and we tried several diff kinds. If there's any way for your son to try them at stores, that would be best. My son hated the kind with 2 wheels in the back because he was always hitting them with his long-legged-stride. We ended up getting him a razor for older kids because he was good on it, but his fascination didn't last long.

He tried and didn't really care for the plasma car. He'd outgrown most of the tricycles. The thing that has lasted the longest is his YBike - he's too big for it now and still loves it at 3-1/2yo. His 5yo friends love it ever time they visit.

So, I think this is one more of those things where kids may or may not like it, so don't spend a lot of money on it, in case it ends up in storage :)
Good luck!

I guess I'm kind of a wimp - my mother got my daughter a scooter when she was only 18 months old and we put it away and didn't let her have it until she was 4. And it's got the 1 wheel in front and 2 in back so it's a L. more stable and she really doesn't have to balance it. But then my daughter is not the most graceful coordinated kid in the world either. I make her wear a helmet whenever she's on it.

My son was super well coordinated. At age 2 he could pedal a bike already (with training wheels). He could even run and leap into a summersault at that age. It was kind of crazy. Our daughter is not like this at all. anyway, he got a 3 wheel scooter at that age and he rode it fine. I would never give one to our daughter...she would just fall down. She cannot pedal yet or do all these things he could do. I think he was just strangely coordinated! Tell your dad to get him a plasma car. They are awesome riding toys that a 2 year old up to a 7 year old just love!!!! They really are neat - they are super zippy and have a very low center of gravity. I am thinking of getting our daughter one!

This is hands down the favorite neighborhood toy. Starting from apx 18mo-2yo ALL THE WAY to age 9 and still counting!!! The kids like these better than their bikes and razors (in my mums neighborhood there are over 30 kids at this point with these). We started requiring helmets at about age 3 when they discovered hills. SUPER stable, SUPER manuverable (for kid-weight, less manuverable for adults, although they're also rideable by adults, if that give you and idea how strong the are).

In our neighborhood they're called "scoochers", because that's the motion kids use to ride them, by pushing with their feet, although one *can* move by just using the butterfly handle bars. In the whole neighborhood we've ony had 3 or 4 spills (out of all the kids) in 7 years. And those, they were *trying* to dump them over. (headsmack). Versus the bikes and scooters which wipe out on a regular basis.

They're ACTUALLY called "plasmacars"
