Refusing Medication

My daughter has never wanted to take medicines such as Tylenol infant drops or antibiotics. We've tried the droppers, the syringes, letting her do it herself, bribing her with candy and we usually end up having to practically force it down her (and half of that she ends up spitting out). I recently bought the Tylenol meltaway tablets now that she's two thinking she might take those, but she still spits it out and refuses to take her medicine. Has anyone else had this problem? I'd love to hear any suggestions that have worked for you.

What can I do next?

My daughter LOVES space, so when we had trouble getting her to take "meh-meh" my husband made it a fun play time by telling her it was special rocket fuel. He'd sucked it up into the syringe and then made it "blast off," all with sound effects. The "rocket" would fly noisily around and into Madison's mouth, depositing its rocket fuel to make her super strong and powerful.

Good luck to you!

I wish I could help you out but I'm having the same exact problem. My son refuses to take meds as well and we also have tried pretty much what you have mentioned. I'd also like to see if anyone else could help suggest something.

My 2 year old daughter takes all her medicine because that's what Black Beauty (the horse) does in the Warner Brothers movie (not animation - real movie). I pour the medicine in the little cup that comes with it, hand it to her and remind her that "Black Beauty takes all his medicine" and she slurps it right down. Hope that helps! I bought the movie for $5 at Wal Mart.

All 3 of my children do not like taking medicications. I've even drank some in front of them and said, "Yummy," to get them to drink it (sometimes that would work :) Recently, I came to the conclusion that as a parent I need to be one step ahead of the winter season flu/colds, therefore I did my research on natural ingredients for supplements. Now, my children rarely get sick (Praise God!). We don't deal with the spitting up of medicines much, because they don't get sick often. The last four Nobel Prizes in Physiology or Medicine were awarded for discoveries in the field of Cellular Communication and that is what our whole family takes now (glyconutrients, and vitamins and minerals). Please email me (____@____.com) if you need more information. You can check out the website www.glycoinformation.com I hope and pray this helps!

My 8 1/2 month old actually likes Tylenol but some of her medicines she does not. We put it in her bottle. I understand that your child is older, but maybe you can put it in something liquid that is sweet where she does not detect the medicine.

Worst case scenario, although I'm sure this would be more trouble than it's worth - there are tylenol suppositories - my DS had to take one when he was 11 months old cause he threw up (we had to go to the emergency room cause he was shaking and feverish - I thought it was convulsions!). That's how they gave it to him. Last resort, but if they're that bad, it might work.

Hey,
When my Son was 2 years I had the same problem and as he matured and was ready he just started taking medication.

I would suggest you stop forcing it just take your time to talk to her and let her know how good it is to take med but trust me she is growing and soon you will be out of it.

Today when my son cough he will ask for med and he never wanted to take it when he was 2 year.

I know you said you've tried bribing with candy, but have you tried CHOCOLATE -- better than candy. My son will do anything for a Hershey's Kiss. So I show him the Kiss and tell him to take his medicine - all of it - so he can get his Hershey's Kiss. It's a special treat -- he doesn't eat Hershey's Kisses any other time -- only for taking medicine, so it's something completely different and exciting for him. Try some kind of special candy or treat -- that she never has.
Also have you tried different flavors of the Tylenol to see which one she prefers, maybe give her a choice - the grape one or the bubble gum flavor one (or whatever). Sometimes the pharmacy can put flavoring in the antibiotics too. But even if they don't, my son will still take it all with the promise of a Kiss. I let him drink it from the little dosage cup -- he hardly ever gets to drink from a non-lid cup so that's different for him, too. Good luck!
