Maybe a Lamb from "Mary had a little lamb"? White sweatsuit, fluff for tail, headband with pom pom for ears.

How cute! What about humpty-dumpty using a white pillow/pillowcase? I think he wears striped tights and a blue hat? Or, Jack from Jack-n-Jill wearing overalls and carrying a bucket of "water" using blue celephane?

Hi L.! Little Boy Blue would be an easy character...Have him dress all in blue and carry a pillow. Then make him a cardboard trumpet. That should take less than 30 minutes and it would be cute too!

I think "little boy blue" would be the easiest. All you would need is to dress him up in blue and give him a cardboard cut out of a bugle or some other kind of horn. To jog your memory... "Little Boy Blue, come blow your horn/The sheep's in the meadow, the cow's in the corn."

Do you know the Muffin Man? The Muffin Man, the Muffin Man. Do you know the Muffin Man, Who lives on Drury Lane?

He could bring muffins to school, if the teacher permits.

To market, to market, to buy a fat pig.
Home again, home again, jiggety jig.
To market, to market, to buy a fat hog,
Home again, home again, jiggety jog.
To market, to market, to buy a plum bun,
Home again, home again, market is done.

He could bring a stuffed pig with him.

Jack, be nimble,
Jack, be quick,
Jack, jump over
The candlestick.

He could bring a little candle with him.

Lots of nursery rhymes here:

Jack from Jack & Jill? Trace a Burger King crown onto construction paper and decorate, and give him a bucket to fetch water. Super simple!

Or how about Jack jumped over a candlestick? (Although he wore a nightgown . . .) But maybe you can get away with jammies and a candlestick. : )

Hmmm, I can only think of "Jack" nursery rhymes at the moment!

Could you wrap some gauze around his head and have him carry a bucket, so he could be Jack from "Jack and Jill, went up a hill, to fetch a pail of water..."? Maybe have him wear some overalls too. If you have a cow, dog, or mouse costume, you could do "Hey Diddle Diddle" or "Hickory Dickory Dock". It would be easy to make ears out of felt and a head band or something, and a tail. How about making a kings crown and putting him in a robe so he can be Old King Cole? Or how about spray painting a grocery bag white and then drawing or painting a big crack going thru it so he can be "Humpty Dumpty"?

You could cut a cresant moon shape out of cardboard or poster board, and cover it in white or yellow wraping paper or something, and he could be "hey diddle diddle, the cat in the fiddle, the cow jumped over the 'MOON'...

Little Boy Blue could be a plaid shirt, overalls rolled up and a straw hat with a play horn.

Diddle Diddle Dumpling my son John
Ran through town with his stockings on
One shoe off and one shoe on,

That's from memory without checking, but seems like it might be easy enough.

Best wishes,

How about Jack be Nimble, Jack be Quick? All you need is a nightshirt and and candle, a matching hat if you have it! Easy and cheap. Good luck!

Jack be nimble - any cute outfit and a candlestick.

A Sailor went to sea, sea, sea - navy blue with a white paper sailor's hat... add an anchor or a loose sailor's tie. - you could make a parascope from a papertowel roll amd some foil.

If he wants to be an animal of some kind you can do a lot with a couple of paper grocery bag and some paint.

Or you can work backwards. See what is in the closet in the way of hats, material that can be draped, parts of old halloween costumes and pajamas and then try to find a rhyme that works with what you can put together. But don't devote too much time to it. He just needs to feel like it is fun and the rest will take care of itself. Remember - it is one day of preschool. Have fun!

How about "Hey diddle, diddle... the cat and the fiddle...." make a fiddle and dress up like a cat? Or make a moon and put on a cow costume?
Or "Oh the grand old Duke of York, he had ten thousand men...." and dress like a soldier
Hope you both have a fun!

Spider costumes aren't too difficult (Little Miss Muffet). Also, try Humpty Dumpty, farmer, mouse or a Little Pig. There are lots of some cute/easy costumes at FamilyFun.com
