Need Naming Advice

Surprise, surprise! My husband and I have actually agreed on a couple girls names, if our baby #2 (due in Sept.) turns out to be a girl! The problem is, one of the names starts with a "P", and the other with a "T". How horribly would she get picked on as a child if her initials were PP or TP? I know, I know...a silly thing to worry about. But I remember how cruel kids can be and I don't want to contribute to that by not taking it into consideration when naming her. Any thoughts?

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Thanks for the thoughts, mamas! My initials are PP, but they've only been that for the past 5 years that I've been married. As an adult, it hasn't been an issue. But children are a whole different story. So it's definitely something that my husband and I will need to weigh in our decision. I really appreciate all the opinions you provided!

As long as the actual name is solid and won't risk too many jokes or mean nicknames I wouldn't worry about the initials. My son's initials are TP and if his biggest worry in school is being made fun of for that then I'm okay with it. I will teach him to joke along with everyone else and get over it. I say go with names you love and have meaning. :)

You're not being silly - you're being realistic! And, unfortunately kids can be cruel. I teach high school and have seen some names that make me stop in my tracks and say "what were these parents thinking? poor kid!". Personally, I'd avoid those initials unless there is a strong family name that you're carrying on...but that's just me.

My initials were actually T.P. going up, and yes, I got teased-more so in one class because we had to introduce ourselves and come up with something with the intitials, and to get it out of the way, I just said "toilet paper", but this wasn't the worst thing that happened to me growing up and it only lasted a day or so. Good luck and congratulations.

I am afraid that I have to agree, too, unfortunately. But, kids (and adults) can be cruel. I use my initials to sign off of notes all day long, and "PP" might be a hard combo. They appear to be your initials though, so how is it for you as an adult? Can the T or P names be used in the middle name?

P.S. CONGRATULATIONS!!

I understand what you are saying... about kids being mean. You could give your child any name though and if kids want to find a way to pick on her name they will find it. I wouldn't worry about her initials. That's just my opinion.

Hi P.,
This is a funny topic for me becuase each time I was pregnant my husband would make fun of me when it came to picking out names. I would check and then double-check spellings and initials just for that reason. I think if you don't 100% love the names it might be best to go with something different. Can you change the spelling to use a different letter? Kids are very mean and who knows what can happen when it gets under someone's skin. Also, think ahead to adulthood, some adults never grow out of childish behavior. I think having to be "joked" with or explain your name, or even pretend you don't care can get very old very fast.
I wish you the very best as you expand your family!

Hi P..
I teach 2nd grade, so I know how cruel kids can be. However, I am due any day with my son and his initials will be P.E.E. My husband and I are just going to try to raise him with confidence and be secure with his name, especially since its that of his 2 grandfathers.

As a teacher, I dont notice kids getting made fun of due to initials. More so if they have rhyming names like Gina Gallina or Bill Smills.

I am the same way about checking initials and meanings of names. My brother was actually almost born with the initials G.A.S before my mom caught it and changed it! I think a child is more apt to be teased if all three letters in the initials add up to spell something funny. Good luck!

My husband is a T.P. and he has a brother P.P., and I don't think the initials ever came up as an issue. (this is the first time I've ever thought of it, and my kids have a last name starting with p!)

I think unless it's something really, really bad, you can't cause teasing by picking a particular name and you can't prevent teasing either. But it seems like names are so varied these days that teasing about names doesn't happen the way it did when i was a kid.

Honestly kids today will pick on eachother about everything. If you found some names that you really like and the two of you can agree on, that would be the farthest thing from my mind.

I was teased because my name was unusual and my last name was so rare....Neiswonger. Mom and dad couldn't change their lastname just because they got teased or their kids got teased. I learned to appreciate my name as I got older.

My SIL teased me about my daughter's name Avianna....she said it sounded like Evian. Whatever....

If you like the names then go for it....

My only recommendation would be to look up the meaning of the names or the background. Wouldn't want to name your daughter something that means something terrible. REcently there was a mom that came to our church for the first time and she named her daughter Delilah..which is a beautiful name, but the most famous Delilah wasn't such a nice person.

Then another little girl comes in named Jezabel. Not something you want to name your sweet innocent little girl.

So look it up, but don't worry about the kids teasing her. My daughter just started kindergarten and she's been teased because she wears dresses, because I make her lunch (with nutritious items in it), because she has long hair to her waist, and the list goes on. It really is a shame.
