Can anyone recommend a good marriage counselor? My husband and I are having a lot of problems recently and really need to start going to try and work this out. I don't want to just pick someone random.

What can I do next?

I have two great ones for you. In Huntington Beach there is Mary Nehls, L.C.S.W. ###-###-####. She is very down-to-earth and non-intimidating. She is my neighbor and has always given me great advice for myself and my kids. She only gives me advice about my husband when I asked (she is a good neighbor after all). The other is Dr. Jeanne Michele. She is in Newport Beach ###-###-####. She is very classy and really likes to reitterate what you or your partner says so people can actually hear what they sound like. She helped my husband and me a lot! Good luck!

I don't know where you live but this woman really helped us through a rough patch. She is a Marriage and Family counselor. I feel like she is an ace in our pocket in case we ever need her again.

My husband & I went to him in very difficult times and he helped us turn our marriage back around. At first it was difficult to open up to a man therapist, but found that when I did he was better able to explain to my husband (in male-ease) how I felt. And subsequently it was easier for my husband to listen to a man that understood where he was coming from.

I recommend this group highly. Their books and seminars are fantastic, even if not local.

I especially recommend the book/audio combination: "The Seven Principles for Making Marriage Work."

Good luck hon.

With two little ones you've seen a lot of changes the last 2 years. It's easy too put the marriage on the back burner but unfortunately at a price. Good for you for wanting to fight for your marriage. It is the glue of your family-don't let it go!
I don't have a name for you, just some books that helped me through tough times with my hubby. All are by Dr. Laura Schlessinger: "The Proper Care and Feeding of Husbands", it's companions "Woman Power" and "The Proper Care and Feeding of Marriage", and 10 things Couples do to Mess Up Their Relationship".
Reading this does take a lot of soul searching and admitting areas where you lack as a wife, which can be hard to swallow at first. Basically, though, you hold the power in the marriage. When I turned myself around, it was amazing how quickly my hubby followed suit (I'm talking just a matter of days!). Your marraige is worth it and these books are probably cheaper than a counselor. Good luck to you both for your kid's sake.

PS-have your hubby read them all along with you with the esception of "Woman Power." Dr. Laura also has a new book called "In Praise of Stay At Home Moms" due out next week. That may give you an esteem boost.

I'm sorry about the status of your marriage. I don't know a counselor but my friend is having marital problems and a counselor suggested she read the book, "The proper care and feeding of husbands." Also you and your husband should watch the movie "Fireproof."

Good luck.
