Need a Good Humidifier

We use a humidifier a lot due to my daughters allergies and constant congestion. We recently had to throw our Hamilton Beach one away. The filters needed to be changed all the time and it was starting to have a funny smell. Does anyone know of a good humidifier that is good for daily use?

What can I do next?

We've been really happy with the Vicks Warm Mist humidifier. We use it almost nightly and it seems to take little maintenance. A little white noise as well. Good luck!

I have a warm mist humidifier, which is better than cold mist because there are no germs to worry about. It doesn't have filters, but you do need to clean out the tray with vinegar once a day, or put it in the dishwasher. It's a Bionaire warm mist humidifier, I got it at Bed, Bath & Beyon for about $45.00

We love our Vicks Cool Mist. I put it on high every night and works like a charm. Since I put it on high (great for drawing out noise) we change the filter every 3 weeks or when I notice browning occuring. However we have very hard water so this makes a difference. When he is congested we also use the Vicks pads which are wonderful. We bought ours at Babies R Us. Good luck!

Becareful of humidifiers, they alone can cause bacteria and respitory disease/ asthma. Better to run a hot shower and steam them.

I am sorry your daughter is having problems with allergies. I can recommend a great system for helping with cleaning the air and the dust mites that cause allergies in your home. Go to www.rainbowsystems.com. I am also a local Rainbow business and can offer you an in home demostration for the Rainbow product. The Rainbow system uses water to trap dirt, dust and dis mite that cause allergies. Good luck.. and I hope this helps.

Hi Sheryl,

We have one for our 9 month old since she just got her first real cold and ear infection in the last month. We didn't spend a lot of money b/c we needed one quickly and didn't have the time to do sufficient research. It's the Cool Mist Humidifier by the Red Cross and First Years, sold at Target for $29.99. I would've liked to have researched it more and invested in a better one, but we'll just be using this one for now. Short term, this one should be fine, but for long term you might want to look in to different ones. Hope this helps, as we too will probably be looking for another one sooner or later!

My doctor suggested that we not use a humidifier, but to buy a cover for our bed and pillow to protect us from dust mites.

We always had to change filters on ours, and then accidently discovered that if you put a few drops of eucalyptus oil in the water every night, which helps open up the bronchial passages, mold and mildew didn't grow either! Might void the warranty on models, but it was worth it to me.

I would think this would work on any model, but we use a Vicks Cool Mist. Haven't changed a filter in a year, and it's still the same color as when we started with it.

Good luck!

I am not sure about a good humidifier to use, but my friend who uses a humidifier daily alternates hydrogen peroxide with water in the humidifier to keep mold from growing and keep the air clean.

I think one question that should be asked before getting a humidifier is...what is causing her allergies? Could it be something she is eating? Did you know that milk causes allergies? Ever since we got off milk products, the allergies went away. It does not happen overnight but it eventualy did. And there are other ways you can get calcium.

My son was going through the constant runny noses & congestion. The doctor did recommend a cool mist humidifier and we do see the benefits of it on his bad nights. We buy our humidifiers from Target and I change the filters often. The doctor did say stay away from the warm mist humidifiers. I think you will be good on any cool mist one as long as you maintain it by changing the filters and if you notice that is starting to collect dust in the fan, then I would invest in a new one. If you find a great one that doesn't require so much maintenance, please let me know! Good thing they are not expensive as sometimes I buy 2 new ones a year~ I probably am spending too money but it has worked for us. Good Luck!

We have a Slant/Fin. I highly recommend them. I use it in my 8 mo old's room. It is a warm air humidifier with an inexpensive filter pad and water sterilization component. My husband, who is a serious allergy sufferer can use it without adverse effects. They now carry them at Bed Bath and Beyond, but bring your coupon, they are kindof pricey.

We purchased a Slant Fin humidifier because the cold mist humidifiers were too difficult to clean and we worried that the mildew would counteract the benefits of using a humidifier. We've been using the Slant Fin for over a year now, and we are very happy with it. It has indicators for changing the filters, and we've only replaced them once so far.

What's recommended for allergies is an air purifier. It's different than a humidifier in that it takes away the pollutants and airborn germs from the air to make what you're breathing in your home cleaner. I am a distributor for Shaklee who makes an incredible air purifer--they have a portable machine as well as a machine that can purify an entire 3000 sq. ft. home. E-mail me directly for more information (____@____.com) or visit my website at www.shaklee.net/andrea_reak.

I hope this will help!

I've been using a KAZ from Walmart for years. It's cool and uses distilled water with no filters to replace. I've been very pleased and found no need to change brands for 7+years.

I thought that humidifier's were not good for allergies. My husband(a doctor) only wants us to use ours when it is only really needed, due to that fact. And then we run it dry, so mold won't build up. We just bought one at the local drugstore that doesn't require a filter. Good luck!

Hi Sheryl,
I have had an Air Purifier in my home for the past two years. Allergies have gone away. You change the filter once a year. It's AirSource by Shaklee and you can find out more at www.shaklee.net/natural_family_products/getclean
Good Luck!

We use the Vicks cool mist also - I read they are better than the warm mist. We had problems with our water (we are on a well) so we buy purified or distilled and use that instead. It works great and has no smell, but they do recommend cleaning it out often and not leaving water in it for extended periods of time.
