Natural/organic Hair Detangler Product Suggestions, Please!

Hi - My 4 y.o. got her hair cut last weekend and the hairdresser used some de-tangler that has left my daughter's hair beautiful - smooth and almost tangle free. (She sleeps with it in a braid to help minimize overnight tangles). The salon we went to does not use natural products, which I feel fine about for our occasional visits there. But I'd like to have a more natural/organic version for regular use at home. The one natural brand we've tried so far (can't remember the name) leaves her hair sticky. Any suggestions? Thanks in advance!

So What Happened?

Thanks everyone for your suggestions. So far I've tried the California Baby detangler, which really didn't work well at all. I also tried the suggestion of mixing conditioner with water - also no good, though perhaps I didn't put enough conditioner in. I'll try that one again.

Unfortunately, my daughter then got lice. It became imperative that we be able to comb every strand of her hair as easily as possible, so as to get all the nits out. In a pinch, I tried Johnson and Johnson's Kids Detangler and it works beautifully. I haven't studied the ingredients - but it makes no claims at being natural....We'll keep trying natural ones, and use the Johnson's sparingly until we find a good alternative.

Thanks again!

Hi A.,

We use California Baby Calming Hair Detangler on my daughter and sometimes i even use it on myself...it's non-chemical, plantbased no tears, etc. It's nice and light and doesnt make her hairy greasy. I buy it at whole foods. Good luck!

MOP hair products (stands for Modern Organic Products-I think) are excellent and light weight. You can probably go to their website to find a retailer near you. I believe they only sell in Salons. JASON is another all natural product line that sells in the grocery store- but I don't know much about them. Hope this helps.

A.,

California Baby brand makes lots of natural and sustainable made baby products. One you might want to look into is California Baby Calming Hair Detangler. It's about $10 around me, but it is not sticky and can be used on wet or dry hair.

YES! California baby is the very best out there. It smells pretty and dries without residue. I just bought BABY OH BABY! (B/c it's 1/2 the price). It works alright. Not as well as California Baby, but the smell sort of reminds me of a urinal.8-(
These are both in any natural food area/whole foods, but Target also carries California Baby line, although they don't all have the detangler. Although the California Baby products are more $$$ then the other brands out there - It will seriously last for like 6 months, so....

My hairdresser suggested that I take an old spray bottle and fill it about 1/4 with conditioner and then add water to the top. We swirl it around before spraying. You can choose any conditioner and smell you like. I also use a Joico product called K-Pak protect&shine, it is a clear gel, you only need a drop or 2. I smooth it over dry or towel-dried hair. It not only detangles but leaves a nice shine. Not sure if it is organic though.

Arbonne makes a hair protectant/ detangler. It is called "to the rescue hair protectant". I use it with my 2 year old. Arbonne can be ordered on-line or purchased from a local dealer ( like mary k, or avon). It has been a while since I've read up on the company, but I think that they are way closer to being all-natural than anything else that can be bought commercially in the states.

Detanglers are just conditioner. So, if you buy a natural conditioner, leave a bit of it in or just put some in when brushing. I use this for my daughter and as long as its a bit then it dries beautifully, not sticky. Too much and its like putting too much gel in.

Call Mary Carpenter in Rockland ###-###-#### and ask about her pH Normalizer. You can also use it on your face as a toner. You spray it on and it detangles hair and makes it shiny. It's very reasonable and highly herbal. It's perfect for children's hair.
