My 14 month old doesnt drink out of a bottle anymore except right before he goes to sleep, but he wont drink his milk from a sippy cup or straw cup, only juice. However, when I give him milk from a bottle, he downs it like its the best thing in the world! How do I get him to drink it from a sippy cup? I have tried making chocolate milk, that doesnt help either.

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Well, I quit giving him juice in his sippy cup so much and just gave him milk. He went to sleep tonight without a bottle and has been drinking his milk out of his sippy cup. Thanks for all the input everyone, I appreciate it!

You might try the new sippy cups that look like a bottle, can be drank out of like a cup, but when turned over, do not leak like a cup. This should help ease the transition for bottle to cup.

M. D I would not offer him juice any more, only water. I would take the bottle away completely so he is not getting mixed messages or thinks he will eventually get his way. Be consistent. Keep offering the milk through out the day in a cup and no juice until he starts with the milk. Also keep in mind juice is not good for teeth of children that age. My 6 yr. old still gets his juice watered down and doesn't know the difference because he doesnt have straight juice. Same with my two yr. old. He gets only a splash in his water. My two year old went through the same phase and now asks for milk. Be patient.Good luck

My, now 5 year old daughter did the SAME thing! I don't know why, but I couldn't get her to drink it. So, i gave her calcium supplements instead. Once she got to about 4 years old she started drinking milk out of the blue at someone else's house (of course a brownie went with it), but she has asked for and loved milk ever since!

Have you tried the nube soft top sippy cups from walmart? They kind of have that "nipple" feel to them. They didn't work for my daughter, but it's worth a try if you REALLY want your child to drink milk.

My pediatrician told me not to worry about her not drinking milk... it contributes to iron deficiency anemia. Supplements are good. Costco sells a calcium only vitamin. You would just need to talk to your pediatrician/pharmacist to find out the correct amount for your child.
Sorry if this was unhelpful!

Maybe let go for awhile and try again later after a month or two.

Hi M.,

I read the other responses and thought I would give you what I did with my daughter. We went from bottle to straw cup cold turkey. I admit she did not take the milk for about 4 days, but then she realized if she wanted the milk, she had to use the straw cup. She cried and fussed, but I did not give in since I knew she drank her morning juice and water from a straw cup. The bottle is a comfort object and she did forget about it after a couple of days. But it was hard. Good luck.

Hi M....
I know it's hard to cut out those night time bottles, but that could be a good start. If offer him a sippy with milk at that time, Take'n'Toss cups worked for us, he will eventually take it once he realizes the bottle is not coming back.
Since you already have introduced juice you could try the orange juice with added calcium and vitamin D to cover those bases. But be careful with the juice, they really should only be having a few ounces a day at that age. Have sippy or straw cup of milk available at all meals and he'll most likely take to it when he's thirsty.
Milk intake begins to cut down too, around that age, 8 oz a day being fine - including milk in cereal, oatmeal and anything else.
Good luck!
