Morning Sickness - Saint Louis,MO

I am in my 6th week of my 2nd pregnancy and I feel like I'm dying. I started having morning sickness at 4 weeks and not just in the morning, all day long. It is so much worse than with my 1st pregnancy and that one was pretty bad. I called my OB and talked to a nurse who called in a prescription for Zofran. I took this with my 1st pregnancy and it worked like a charm. She told me to only take a 1/2 pill at each dose instead of a whole one to prevent constipation. I took the 1/2 pills as directed for a few days and started feeling nauseous and throwing up again. So I started taking whole pills instead of the 1/2's. That helped for about a day and now I'm nauseous and vomiting again. I have done nothing but lie in bed all weekend and I believe I've lost weight cause I can't bring myself to hardly eat anything. I managed to get down some crackers, popsicles, and mashed potatoes with water. But I can't stomach anything else. I have an almost 3 year old and my husband works out of town during the week. I work full time as well. I feel like I can't function. I bought those Sea Bands and wore those - they did nothing. I chewed ginger gum. It didn't work. If anyone has ANYTHING they have tried and it worked please let me know. I have to get this under control so I can live my life.

What can I do next?

I sucked on peppermint altoids, the full strength ones, all day every day when I was pregnant. I helped the sickness to feel bareable enough to go to work and such. I really hope you get feeling better. I know how bad the "morning sickness" can be.

With my first I had morning sickness all day, everyday for 28 weeks. There's not a lot you can do. As difficult as it is keep trying to eat whatever you can, salttine crackers and toast did well for me, small bites. And drink lots and lots and lots of water. My doctor had me drinking gatorade to prevent dehydration.

I couldn't have any red meat. I also avoided dairy products.

Good luck.

i'm sooo sorry!! drink as much water as you can, and try to eat some protein every hour. nuts, hard boiled eggs, hummus, chicken, peanut butter, yogurt, etc. just a bite or two will be enough. don't wait till you start feeling yucky to eat. that's what helped me the most.

if you are open to it, acupuncture could really help. it isn't as scary as it sounds, the needles don't even go in far enough to bleed. if you've had a baby before, you could stomach acupuncture for sure, and it would make things better!!

Sublingual Vitamin B-12, took it with my second pregnancy and it helped alot, bought it at Whole Foods, that and chewing a full sugar tangy chewing gum, as my mouth was always watering with the nausea, were the only two things that helped, I also used the sea bands round the clock.

I too have Zofran but was told to take it twice a day and the whole pill. They're so tiny, I don't know how 1/2 would even work lol I drank a lot of Canada Dry Ginger Ale and flavored water (regular water for some reason had a foul taste). I was also prescribed a stool softener to help with constipation... which is VERY common when you take your prenatals everyday like you're suppose to because it has iron in them. I couldn't keep down crackers, they made me more nauseous, so it was a liquid diet for me and I too lost weight. I was told that getting fluids is most important in the first trimester. What you are eating is sufficient enough, BUT if you start to lose too much weight and can't keep down ANYTHING including water... you need to see your doctor asap. Your body needs lots and lots of rest so keep doing what you're doing and pray by your second trimester it will subside. Maybe see if a friend or family member could come over for a few hours a couple nights a week to watch your 3 year old, while your hubby's gone, so you can get some much needed rest. I feel your pain... best of luck to you!

H.,
I'm so sorry to hear you're going through all this. I can only imagine how horrible it is for you. The only help I can offer is that i have a copy of what is supposed to be a fool-proof morning sickness diet. I have passed it along to several friends suffering in their first trimester and I've been told that it works well. It's strict and you have to follow it to a T, but it's supposed to help. If you would like me to send you a PDF copy of the diet, just PM me and give me your personal email address and I'll send it along.

I hope you get better very very soon!

This is exactly what happened to me and I thought second pregnancies were supposed to be easier! Anyway, what really helped me was to have a very rigid set schedule - take the Zofran as you're supposed to and make sure to eat a little something every 2 hours. I actually set the alarm on my cell phone to remind me that it was time to eat or take a pill and did this all day long...annoying but it REALLY helped. I was still nauseous but it stopped most of the vomiting and I could semi-function at work again! I mostly stuck to crackers because that was about all I could handle, but you may find other things that work. And also make sure you eat FIRST thing when you get out of bed. Evidently keeping a little food in your stomach prevents you from getting hungry, because when that happens you're too sick to eat. Hopefully you'll be done with the morning sickness at 12 weeks...mine stayed until 16 weeks! Ugh! :(

Good luck!

I gained too much weight with my first pregnancy because all I could eat was ice cream. Then with the others I didn't throw up like with the first but was sick the first 4 months. It was harder each time as you had children to take care of and cook for and the smell of food was awful. I don't think they gave much for it back in my day, I never was given any medication. I know if you keep throwing up you can get an IV to hydrate you, etc. but otherwise just try what you can and count the days until you aren't sick. With one of mine even my own saliva made me sick and I felt like I had to spit which will dehydrate you and that was just awful and nothing helped. I can only encourage you that at the worst it will only be about 7-8 more months and hopefully not past the 4th month. I have heard that just getting out and going helps but good luck getting out and going. I had a boss tell me it was 'all in my mind'. That I know is not true. Try not to let it get you down though. Can someone help with your 3 yr. old and can you work less hours or take some time off?

I am so sorry! that is terrible! And the very reason I am not sure if I will ever get pregnant again! I was sick the entire time with my son, and just when it was about to go away I was diagnosed with pre eclampsia, which was do in part to the fact that I was sick the whole time. If you do not do something quick you are gonna end up hospitalized for dehydration. drink what you can and eat before you feel too bad. Good luck let us know how things go!

I had all day nausea & vomiting in my 3rd pregnancy , from weeks 6-16 and I truly felt like a was going to die! What helped me was cutting out dairy from my diet , I had no cheese at all and used lactose free milk for cereals , I felt so much better for this. It is worth looking into to see if you are eating any dairy as this can make sickness worse.

try crackers and Vernors (ginger ale). That worked for me and just take it easy. Have you tried calling the Dr. back and telling him that the meds are working?

I second the previous poster regarding Reglan. I was like you and had 24/7 morning sickness while trying to work full-time. Then I had the nurse at the ob's office say, well get more rest and it's just something that you'll have to deal with - listen lady, I'm not going to have a job if I can't do it because I spend all day in the bathroom. Reglan worked best of all. Zofran helped also. I would dissolve it in some water and take it like a shot because the whole dissolving on the tongue thing was making everything worse. The other thing they had me try was B-12.
One other random thing that helped a bit, especially just so I could get food down was pickled ginger - like they give you with sushi. Regular ginger didn't work, but that did.
Also, I figured out part of my problem was allergies. My seasonal allergies were much worse because of the extra blood/inflamed sinuses. Some of my nausea was caused by drainage.
I feel your pain and I hope you find something that works.

I'm so sorry! I had hyperemesis with all five of mine and one miscarriage. It is the most miserable feeling ever. It was worse for me with my pregnancies in my twenties. I could at least function with my two pregnancies that were in my thirties. You need to rest a lot and drink plenty of fluids, even if you throw it up. Try drinking recharge which is a juice that keeps your electolytes in tact without all the sugar or drink smart water. That will keep you hydrated. Try all the tricks that they usually tell you but doesn't seem to work, like smaller meals, crackers when you wake up etc. Although, it doesn't seem to work with hyperemesis, it is better than nothing. Your doctor may want to put you on IV's so keep him informed with how much you're keeping down or throwing up. Stay hydrated and eat small and often. Hang in there! Good luck to you and congratulations! BTW Ginger root kind of helped especially once it started tapering down at the end. I became allergic to it in my fifth but it kind of helped some. Also, endocreme brand progesterone cream helped some too. It kind of brought it down a notch but again, I became allergic to it in my fifth pregnancy. UGH!

I feel your pain, I went through 4 pregnancies with different variation of morning sickness that left me miserable. I couldn't take anything that the doc described, it just made it worse. So I chatted with my family doctor and she suggested nuts, any kind, and it helped. My favorite are cashews, but any kind of nut should work. She suggested peanuts but my stomach hasn't handled peanut products since my first pregnancy. Also, if you are craving something, eat it. My third pregnancy, I wanted Taco Bell, what I didn't know is that was all I could eat for my pregnancy, taco bell & mexican food minus anything that was spicy. The workers at taco bell were wonderfull and they got to see me twice a day from 1rst trimester till I was placed on bed rest, then my honey had to bring me home the food.
I hope this helps.

I so feel your pain. I was on Zofran wth both of my pregnancy and lost alot of weight with both. I agree with sticking to a schedule of taking your Zofran and eating small meals. It really is a kind of cycle thing for those of us that get really sick. If you get too dehydrated the only thing that helps is IV fluids. I had to go to the hospital twice with my first pregnancy and once with my second. I know its a pain to goto the hosiptal or the doctors office but they can really help get you over the hump. Then stay on your schedule. Pass me a message if you want more info.

I was the same way with my son. I was actually extremely sick from about a week before we found out I was pregnant until almost 4 months. The only thing I can say is that drinking ginger ale seemed to help a little bit, but for the most part, the only relief I got was when I was sleeping. I know with a 3 year old that isn't an option, so I would say keep up with the crackers and popsicles and get sleep when you can.

Another thing I can tell you would be prenatal vitamins. A nurse friend of mine told me to go to Flinstones gummy vitamins, atleast for the first few months...you get all the vitamins you need, without all the extra iron (that's what was making me so sick) Once I went to my OB at 3 months, he prescribed me a prenatal with less iron and that worked.

The good thing is, it won't last forever. I wish you the best of luck.

Hi H.,

I was in the same boat as you not so long ago. I was so sick, I could do nothing but lie on my bed. I could not eat, drink, or even lift my head. I was that way for quite some time, until my hubby called my doctor, and she prescribed Reglan. This stuff was amazing! Within 12 hours, I was feeling almost completely normal, and it was so great! It is also a very inexpensive drug, with few side effects...it just made me sleepy, but I felt it was a good trade off. One thing though, if you end up trying Reglan, take it every 6 hours, around the clock(or however the RX says to take it), because I mistakenly thought that I would stop taking it after I felt better, and like, 1 day later BAM! I was right back to feeling soooo sick. So I took it from then on like I was supposed to, until the start of my 2nd trimester. BTW, it turns out I was carrying twins, and that's why my sickness was so severe. Maybe you have 2 in there. Good luck, and let us know how everything works out.

Hi there, I know how you feel I was just like that with my son whom is 3 weeks old now. The doctors gave me Finergen. I loved it, only problem was it makes you tired. I slept like 14 hours a day. But I was so sick for two months straight I lived in my bathroom literally. Talk to your doctor about changing the medicine. Hope you feel better soon. :)

For some people nothing works you just need to wait it out. A friend of ours who is preg with her first has been to the ER on the weekly basis because she was throwing up hourly for the first 16 weeks....it's a bit better now. I am sick for the whole 9 months with my kids....I do not throw up just feel "pucky" all the time. Hope you feel better, hang in there.

Things that helped me were sour things (War Head candies, Raspberry Zinger tea from Celestial Seasonings, etc.) and hot cinnamon things (Fire Jolly Ranchers, Cinnamon gum, etc.). Also, sipping cold water with LOTS of ice. Good luck. It's definitely not fun, but it will pass-- hopefully soon!
