Milk Alternative

My son will be tested for a milk-protein allergy next week, but we have been advised to live completely milk free (and all animal milk free) since he was about 9.5 months. He had been placed on soy formula when he was 2months old. He is now 13.5 months and we have been slowly switching from formula to soy milk. If your children cannot drink cows/goats milk, what kind of milk do they drink and why that choice? There is rice, almond, soy, and coconut, and I am not sure which is the best option instead of whole milk. I thought that going from soy formula to soy milk would be fine, but he seems to be more constipated than usual, but I am not positive the reason. Once the allergy is confirmed we will be able to see a nutritionist via insurance, but that will take a little while.

What can I do next?

There is a real controversy over soy so I avoid it like the plague. Soy mimics female estrogen and they believe that girls are hitting puberty early because of it. I can not imagine the effects on a boy.

My daughter is allergic to the protein in cow's milk. We were told that the proteins in goat's milk are very similar so to avoid it as well. She is also allergic to nuts so almond milk is off the table. She drinks rice milk (not a lot) and we use it in place of regular milk when cooking/baking.

I was told to lay off dairy for a while and tried rice, almond, and coconut milk. At my age there was no replacement for cow's milk. I'd rather go without. With that being said I was happy that my daughter did not have a point of reference. I found the other milks to be on the sweet side

My daughter has a dairy allergy and we use soy milk. If your son has food allergies I'd be very careful not to introduce a nut milk because he could be very allergic to it. I'm not sure what would cause him to be more constipated but you could try adding more fruits/veggies to his diet, trying organic, you might have to switch to rice or other milk. Good luck.

I was told all the alternatives are pretty good, especially almond milk. If the allergy is confirmed be careful with reading food labels and while eating out. since you mention he is constipated, it is not likely it is from the new milk I wondered if maybe he is taking an iron supplement? Since he is now 13.5 months have him eat more whole grains, raisins, increase his water intake too. Good luck.

My son drinks soy milk. It was recommended by his pediatrician, allergist and a nutritionist at the allergist's office. We were told that soy milk has the most nutrients - fat and protein, especially - that are important to young babies. In terms of vitamins and nutrients, it is most similar to cow's milk, but without the whey and casein that cause allergies.

You will hear a lot of pros and cons about all the different types of milks, so talk to your docs and make sure you're doing what's right for your baby.

My son can't drink regular milk either and had been on soy for a long time. Then we switched to lactose free milk and he is doing great on that now. He likes it better than the soy too. But its the only kind of milk he can drink. Even just a sip or two of reg milk makes him so sick.

My granddaughter was allegic to the milk protein. She also tested allergic to soy and nuts. We were told soy allergies are also common. I suggest you add soy to the test.

I'm lactose intolerant and my granddaughter was allergic to milk protein. We both drank and used rice milk. For us, the flavor seemed the best. I've tried hemp milk, almond milk, and coconut milk and did not like the flavors.

I gave my first soymilk for a while. Then i did a little research and there is some controversy over soymilk, so we switched to coconut milk...the vanilla flavored. Apparently the saturated fat in coconut milk is very good for us. Now my second drinks it too. They both are allergic to milk, among other things! Rice milk doesn't have much of anything in it. Your little one needs lots of fat until 2. Good luck

There is all kinds of advice out there. I've heard Coconut is the best, but not the processed kind (even though it's still better than soy). They also make coconut milk ice cream which is amazing! Second in line is Almond milk. Third Rice. Last soy.
