I'm looking for a pediatric dentist in Pgh - preferably the south hills. If you take your kids to one, who is it and what do you like about this dentist? What can I expect during an exam? My kids are 2 1/2 yo and 3 1/2 yo?

What can I do next?

I too live in the South Hills, and twice a year choose to venture to Sqirrel HIll to take my daughter to Dr Jack Pechersky. He is awesome, as is his staff. They made me feel very comfortable as well as my dgtr. They explain everything to the kids and let them help with the exam and cleaning. (hold the suction tube, squirt the water). They give them a pair of sunglasses to wear so the light isn't shing right in their eyes and lets them hold a mirror to watch what is going on. It is worth the trip to Sq Hill twice a year!!

I live in Munhall and take my daughter to Dr. Deborah Brandes in West Mifflin, she is a pediatric dentist. She was recommended to me and I absolutely love her she is great and the place is wonderful. They use sunglasses for the kids and call them special sunglasses(to protect them fromt the light and make them feel special) there is also a tv in the room with cartoons on for them to watch while your waiting. they get stickers and stuff when they leave.

Here is her Address and phone number
Deborah A. Brandes, D.M.D., M.S.
500 Lewis Run Road
Suite 128

Do not, I repeat DO NOT take your children to doctor Deborah Brandis. I took my daughter there out of concern that she had a cavity. She told me she had 4 and wanted to put her under and fill them through a surgical center. I was not comfortable with this and after speaking to her pediatrician I cancelled the appointment I had scheduled.

After 6 months passed and she was due for another check up I asked some of the other preschool moms for a recommendation. One recommended Dr. Michael Ledonne. I took her there and explained the situation. After looking in her mouth he was visablly disturbed. My daughter only had one tooth that had, what he described as a 'catch'. He said he wanted to watch it another 6 months. After that 6 months he decided to fill it. He did it in the office WITHOUT novacain (and my daughter did great). He could not understand why Brandis would even say my daughter had 4 cavities and want to put her under. I have taken her to him ever since.

Good luck!

We use a great group called Dentistry For Kids their web site is www.dentistry-for-kids.com they have offices in Harrison City, Monroeville, Mellon Pavilion, and the North Hills. All the dentists (there are 5, but Dr. Matt & Dr. Katie are my girls favs) are great! They also work with an Orthodontist that is beyond excellent named Dr. Reed. We have been seeing Dr. Matt for 8 years now (in the Monroeville office) and I couldn't give them a higher recommendation!! My girls actually LIKE going to the dentist! The staff is excellent too.

"Dr. Jack!" is the one for us. His office is in Squirrel Hill and a small parking lot is available without paying. Otherwise, there are meters on the street which take quarters. My kids actually love going to have their teeth cleaned there. The ladies are excellent! All the equipment is explained to the kids and the kids get to touch everything before it goes near their teeth. Kids get to wear sunglasses and have a Polaroid taken at their first visit. Also, my husband is 38 years old and he was a patient of Dr. Jack's. Dr. Jack remembers my husband and always asks about him. Dr. Jack is the only one for us. (Oh, my kids were only 4 years old and 2 years old at their first visits if that helps. And I got to stay in the back with the kids for the first cleaning. To keep my 2 year old calm, I just kept my hand on her lower leg.)

My dentist is in Cranberry Township. he is not listed as a Pediatric Dentist but works on all of my kids...doing their initial exams when they were two and have been treating them for years. They cater to kids and are a very friendly atmosphere.

They give the kids cool sunglasses to wear so the light doesn't hurt their eyes. Normally for the first exam, they just ask the child to lay there, wear the bib, sunglass if they want, and then the dentist just does a nice general exam, looking in the mouth, seeing if the child will let him count teeth, etc. For the cleaning, the dental assistant will do teh cleaning with the machine and the dentist will follow up with you and the hygienist after the cleaning.

Super smooth process. Great facility. Dr. Watkins on Executive Drive.
