Kissing on the Lips - Metairie,LA

We kiss our 5 year old on the lips -- quick peck -- but recently she wants to copy movies, "how girls look at boys when they are in love" and kissing. She wants to kiss me for a prolonged time on the lips. How to deal with this, without making it into something it's not but letting her know it's not appropriate?

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

She's not exposed to adult movies, there's plenty of mooning and kissing in animated movies, always has been. Thanks for the answers.

Just explain - the peck are kid kisses; boy/girl "love kisses" are how grownups like mommy and daddy kiss. No drama, just facts.

My 3.5 year old tried to kiss me like they kiss in the Disney movies - whoa! Just told her princess kisses are for grown-ups, and little girl kisses are what she can give.

Just tell her that is how grown-ups kiss.

We kiss on the lips too. My son likes to open his mouth (not from movies or tv... he hasn't seen that or seen us doing that), but in a silly way. I just say "oh, no thanks! My lips aren't food!" and go do something else. We close our mouths to kiss and open them to eat or talk.

hmmm, it's a phase & it will end soon if you don't make a big deal out of it.

my younger son went thru a phase (age 4-5) where he wanted to give "sexy kisses". (that's what happens when older brother is 9 years ahead :).

& then he morphed into "Dean Martin kisses"....(insert eye roll here). I have NO idea how he came up with that one!

I would just say no, that's grown up kissing. My daughter tried it once and that's what I told her. She hasn't tried it again.

my daughter calls them "wedding kisses"-- she thinks they are just for a husband and wife. makes sense to a 5 year old...

i simply said when she kissed M. and mocked a grown up one (obviously with lips closed) that she is not allowed to do that its for adults and she asked is it not appropriate? and I said yes and she giggles and went on with her business

We kiss on the lips too. Always did in my family. Still kiss my mom on the lips. No big deal.
She's probably just trying to be silly and has no idea that it's not appropriate. Just tell her "not like that" and move on. She'll get past it.

Why don't you just tell her... that this is not something to do? Its only in movies or with grown ups etc.?

Many young kids, go through that phase.

I tell my four year old that it's not appropriate for mommies/daddies and their kids to "movie kiss". It's for grown ups.

He's been into butterfly kisses...wiggling of the nose!

I agree with the others and have also told my daughter that it is for getting married kisses, because that is usually when the princess does the kissing like that when they get married. They are for grown ups. Funny story to share: my 4 year old son likes to give us a peck on each cheek. One time my dad called it a French kiss meaning to say European kiss. My 6 year old has now said she wants to French kiss. AHH! I had to explain that Papa said it wrong and not to ask for French kisses because that is for when you are married. Lol.

Sounds like my five year old son.

We do the 'runaway' kisses when I kiss all over his face and sometimes I put my hand over his mouth and pretend to do a long kiss. The hand in the middle makes it funny and he stops asking for BIG kisses.

I always kissed my daughter on the lips. She's 22 now and we still kiss on the lips.

Just tell her that long kisses are for girlfriends and/or boyfriends, not family.

That is pretty precocious for a 5 year old. Where is she seeing movies with mature themes? Kids do like to imitate what they see, so the best bet is to monitor what she is exposed to.

We always used to tell my dad we "wanted to kiss like in the movies." He would allow us to do a long smooch with head turning but no open mouth or closed eyes or anything. It was exaggerated and fun - nothing inappropriate about it.
