My son was born with one & had it repaired when he was 6wks old. The surgeon made sure that there wasn't one on the other side as well. Any surgery is difficult to have done on your child, but it was over in about 30-45 min., he recovered from the anesthesia and because he was so young we had to stay until they were sure he was OK. It didn't seem to bother him at all afterwards, he had a couple of stitches we had to have removed about 1 wk later. Good Luck to you & your child.

Hi R.,
14 years ago, my son had the hernia surgery. He was also 2. I remember with that surgery (he had 3 surgerys that year), he didn't even need tylenol afterward. He came home the same day. We did have a pediatric anestitician meet with my son and I. Both of us felt less anxiety after we met with him. I'm sure that there have been many changes since then, for the better. You and your son will be fine.

Hi R.:

My son had a double inguinal hernia when he was three years old. He had the repair surgery done and it took only about 1 1/2 hours. He woke up a little cranky from the anesthesia, but was home within a couple of hours and was jumping around soon after like nothing had happened. He bounced back amazingly quickly. I am sure it will be the same for your son.

Good luck.

Hi! My name is Maria Shaw. I live in Verona, New Jersey and I work with a General and Vascular surgoen in Clifton, New Jersey. I have been working with Dr. Joseph Baratta for over 10 years and we do have experience with toddler hernias. We have experience with umbilical, ventral and inguinal hernia repair. If, your child is really not in too much discomfort it should not be and emergent situation. If, there is a lump at the area of dicomfort and he/she is able to lay down and push it back in with no distress then this should not be too much of a problem for he/she. surgery under gen. anestheasia is an elective choice but, if your child is in distress then it could become emergent. My doctor would do it asap if the pt. is in distress. He would rather wait for the child to get a little older. Usually, when they are small they do lots of falling and are very active and could open up the incision if, not careful for 4 weeks after surgery.
A hernia is a tear in the fascia (a sheath or lining protecting the muscles of the abdomen)and when u feel a lump the muscle or intestinal wall pops through the tear. So, that is basically the definition of a hernia. if, you have any other questions, you can email me at ____@____.com, you can make an appointment with us at ###-###-####.
