Infant Hemangiomas

My son had a deep tissue hemangioma one the side on his nose by the cormer of his eye. I went to see Dr. Wagner at Childrens Memorial. She is the best Dr I have ever seen! Anyway, because his was so close to his eye he started taking steroids to stop the growth. It worked without any side effects. The doctor told me that they tend to grow until the child is 1 and then shrink slowly after that. Good Luck. It is definitely nerve racking...but the good news is they are still healthy and it goes away without a trace after a while! We just told other kids that asked what happened that he gets too many kisses from us so it left a mark :)

Hi there -- My son had one on his forehead, it also started about 3 weeks after birth, a tiny red mark, and by 1 yr old it was about the size of a blueberry, a small one. It didn't hurt him and at about a year and a half it did start to (what looked to me) spread out and dissipate, as his head grew, the blood vessels under the skin spread and kind of retracted or grew into the muscle or something, because by age 2 it was just a medium-pink spot, by 2.5 it was just light pink, and now, at age 4, it's just a little tiny skin-colored birthmark that's pretty cute. I've read that they do go away by age 4 or 5, and if they don't, or if they start to encroach on the eye, nose or mouth, that surgery can be done to remove them. Good luck, am sure she will be fine over time, but keep an eye on it/them. The one thing that I did have to get used to were all the people who would comment "oh did he get a booboo?" and at first i'd try to explain but after a few months i'd just say "yep!"

My 3.5 yr old has one on her back.....it wasnt there at birth and when she was a few weeks old I thought it was a bruise at first and was freaked out.
She still has it, it is fading though, its becoming flatter and the color is fading. Our doctor also said by the time she was around 8 that she wouldnt have it anymore. I believe the face ones are a little different and they tend to go away sooner.

My daughter had one right on half her eye lid and it started growing but stopped then by the time she was a year and a half old it was completely gone. It would turn dark red when she cried, now she is five years old and doesn't even look like she had anything that red on her eye. The doctor also had me on a wait and see. She also got the mark after like 2 weeks.

I was a born with one over my right eye brow, I wouldn't have known if it wasn't for some of the baby pictures (in most of my posing pics my mom would cover it with my curls); mine did grow to the size of a small stawberry, but was completely gone on it's own by about my 6th birthday. Its now completely gone! Well mostly I did see one again but this time on my second born a few weeks after he was born six years ago, his is on his wrist; at the beginning it was a bright raspberry color now it's a fading pink. Based on my experience with it as a child I won't be treating his unless there's some drastic changes. Good Luck

my now 2 yr old had one a few weeks after she was born. it was just under her chin. i thought it was a swollen gland at first til we could see a little bluish color through her skin. it got to be the size of a really small grape (i mean really small). i googled it and of course got freaked out by the pictures i found online, but hers went away by 9 months, i think. it never bothered her.

My friend's baby has one on her face also. It was not there at birth but showed up a few weeks later. She just turned 1 and it's still there but she's gone to specialists and they all say that they tend to clear up on their own. She doesn't want her daughter to be self concious of having a mark on her face but she also doesn't want to put her through any procedures if she doesn't have to. She's still hoping it will go away on it's own.

My son has one under his eye. Like your child it did not really show up until 3 weeks of age, then over the course of a couple days it turned bright red and slightly raised, his is only 1-2 cm. His doctor took a wait and see approach for any changes, since it was so close to his eye he wanted to act quickly if it was growing as to not affect his vision, but if it was stable wanted to leave it alone. HIs was stable, did not grow or change at all from the time it developed. And now at age one (turned one on June 1st), it is almost gone, just a light pink spot which I expect to get even lighter. My SIL had a couple on her face as a baby, hers also did not grow much after forming and faded before she entered school without any treatments. Good luck and I hope they stay small.
