In Need of Makeover

In 'honor' of my pending 40th birthday, I've decided it's time for a makeover. I wear minimal makeup now so need to relearn what works best.

I use Clinique cleansing products, but don't like their makeup as it 'falls off' by noon. I have oily skin that still breaks out a lot, so need a line of products that covers it up, stays on, and doesn't make it worse. Does anyone have any recommendations? I prefer department store brands, versus Mary Kay or other personal sales brands.

Thanks,
J. in Olathe

So What Happened?

Thanks for all the good advice. I'm going to go ahead and find a good esthetican to 'clear the playing field' then start using mineral foundations/make-up. Now I'm researching for a good esthetican and also researching a makeover specifically for Bare Essentials. Thanks!

Try going to Beauty Escentuals at 135th and Metcalf. They have a full line of Bare Escentuals and the other skin care called MD Formulations (I think that is what it is called). MD Formulations is made by the same company as BE it is just what there skin care line is called. Hope this helps.

I don't wear make-up daily either but when I need cover-up/foundation I LOVE the stuff that the Body Shop puts out. It's oil-free and actually makes a blemish go away and provides excellent and even coverage. I use a variety of make-up for everything else as I find that certain brands have certain make-ups that work great. I usually can find good stuff from Nutrogena and it's hypo-allergenic. I use Aveda hair products - fabulous...Good luck, I'm sure you'll be lovely whatever you choose!! Happy Birthday!

About 2 months ago I came across a little side shop at the Independence center called color expression (right in front of the hallmark store). This makeup is a little expensive but worth the money. It stays on all day, does not make your skin oily (I have very oily skin with some acne), covers everything so good!! It is very similar to bare minerals but a little cheaper. It is all powder no liquids at all. This makeup feels like you have none on and it looks so GOOD All Day!!! You should go out there and get a free makeover it is a drive but worth it. This makeup has even cleared my acne up!! Good Luck!

J.,
I am with on the makeover! I am in desperate need of one as well. I have sorta started mine though. I found this stuff at wal-mart called AcneFree. It is basically the cheap form of proactive solutions. I love it. I had a lot of breakout on my face and was always embarrased with it. I started using this stuff a couple weeks ago and love it. It said I would notice changes in about 3 days but it took a couple more than that. But in just a couple of weeks my face is clearer than it has ever been. This stuff runs about $18. Small price to pay for clear skin. I would start with that. I don't usually wear a lot of make-up so I couldn't help you in that department. But I wish you luck. Let me know if you try it and if you like it.

I LOVE Loreal True Match foundation and powder. They give great even coverage and it doesn't wear off--I still look fresh faced towards the end of the day. It's about $10 each at drugstores.

I think it's time for you go visit a good esthetican. Normally they will recommend a facial that is designed for your skin type and recommend products for your skin type.

Also mineral make-up is really the best thing if you are going to use foundation. Bare Essentials, Everyday Mineral or the higher end ones like Jane Iredale.
Try to avoid the drug store brands, they contain more fillers like talc. This can irritate your skin.

I second the recommendation of bare minerals. It covers well, stays on well, and is even okay to sleep in (it is good for your skin). It has an spf of 15, and is not too expensive. I could not believe a powder base would cover my breakouts, but it does. Also, my dermatologist said that I should just use neutrogena acne cleanser and cetaphil mousturizer since I have oily skin and break outs. I tried lots of department store brands, but none worked as well as that combo does. Proactive did not work for me--too drying--and I am afraid of drying out my skin at my age (30). Good luck!

My dear friend is an esthetician at Bolero Salon and Spa in Independence. It is a drive from Olathe but you won't regret your experience. Stephanie will have a great consultation and can customize a facial specifically for your skin. I would highly recommend her...and not just because she's a friend. She's worth every penny you'll spend. She's not pushy or anything like that. She really, really helped me get my skin on track. (I also have super sensitive and oily skin.) She works Wednesdays, Fridays and every other Saturday. You can check out their site at: www.bolerosalonandspa.com. There is a $10 off coupon under the "Contact Info and Directions" tab. It's an incredibly beautiful salon and will make your experience a true treat! They carry exclusive products such as Bumble & Bumble and Dermalogica (the skincare and makeup line). If those specific days don't work for you, Rachael works Tuesdays, Thursdays and every other Saturday. I don't know her all that well as I quit working (had my daughter) shortly after she started. I've always heard positive things about her though! They have the same training and certifications so it shouldn't make much of a difference. I hope this helps!

Hi J....sounds like you have received some great recommendations! I agree that you might enjoy seeing an aesthetician. I know a great one at CJ's hair salon on 95th and Nall. Her name is Katie Mooney and the number is ###-###-####. However, I must say that I am an Arbonne devotee. I had a terrible time with blemishes and blackheads and tried almost all the department store brands until I was given a sample of the Arbonne products. I finally feel like I don't have to layer on tons of concealer and foundation because my skin cleared up so much. Of course, after such great success with the product I chose to become a consultant with the company so if you would like to try some of our products I would be happy to get some to you. Please know, I have no intentions of pressuring you into a sale. I just remember what it was like going from counter to counter trying to find something that would consistently work. Ugh! We have several different lines including an acne line if you feel that is what you need...although, I think you would prefer one of our other lines and a good masque to clear up your breakouts. I also agree with the mineral powder foundation. I love ours because it covers really well and doesn't seem heavy. It also has an spf 15 to protect from sun damage.

Alright....well, that's my two cents! Feel free to email me if you want to sample anything: ____@____.com a great day!

I believe marriage is better the second time around also! I used Mary Kay for yrs, and then tried Clinique (hated it). I have found Arbonne is a wonderful change. I'm very busy w/ work PT as a nurse, plus wife/kids 5 and 3yrs. I wear little make-up also. I hope this works for you. Good luck! J.

Honestly, the best product I've found (and my skin is always broke out etc) is plain ol' CoverGirl Dream Matte Mousse Foundation... Not Department Store brand, but works great, is light, and stays on... Good Luck and Happy Birthday!!

P.S. I've tried the Proactiv, and the Acne Free, and honestly, niether of them have worked for me = P I say go to a dermatologist that's your best bet for the skin issues, I still have yet to make it to one due to $$ issues = P

Hi J....I use Mineral makeup by Glo... So the makeup part I cannot help you with, but I have oily skin as well and started using All Clear Cleanser and toner-the toner was the one that helped with my oily skin the best-But it has helped my face not become so oily throughout the day. All clear is a product by Beauti Control and I have mini samples if you wanted to try it out on your face. email me if you want some samples, ____@____.com...as far as the makeup line, I have difficulties with finding new things myself..Good luck!

Hi J.! My name is L. and I am new to this board but I just read your message and wanted to offer my services to you. I am esthetician out at 3 Brunettes and a Blonde Salon and would love to help you out. You can call me at 913 681 HAIR (4247)to schedule an appt or contact me here.

I would suggest a good skin care line for you (does not have to be pro or dept store) and do you use any sort of primer on your face before applying make-up? I have oily skin as well and a good primer has really helped me.

I look forward to talking with you.

L.
