I Need Feedback on Convertible Cribs

Hi ladies, my fiance's daughter has requested a convertible crib as our gift to her. She picked out the specific one she wants (the brand is Tori) and I can only find it at JCPenney.com. By the time I add the shipping (she lives in another state), mattress and tax, it comes to about $600. Well I'm unemployed since April and simply don't have quite that much to spend. Have you used a convertible crib? What are your thoughts on it? Do you really keep it from infant to toddler and then use as a regular bed or do they wear out and look ratty by then? Do any of you have experience with the Tori brand and have feedback?

I asked my boyfriend to call her today and tell her to go to a particular website that has tons of convertible cribs and free shipping, tell her our budget for the crib and tell her to pick out what she wants in that price range. Are there any brands we should stay away from?

Any advice or insight you have would be appreciated.

What can I do next?

I think you handled this well - very generous to offer to buy such a large item! I have a DaVinci convertible crib that we bought from amazon.com for about $250 w/ free shipping. We will likely use it as a toddler bed, but as with most convertible cribs, when converted it takes a full sized mattress. While a full is not much bigger than a twin, my little girl's room is not particularly huge. But the bed is beautiful, and I can always use it should I have a second child.

Anyway, amazon.com offers free shipping on many cribs, and has reviews to help your fiance's daughter make an informed decision.

Good luck!

Perhaps tell her you'll get her a pack n play until you can afford the crib you/she wants. Or wait til after Christmas when everything goes on sale. Everyone knows times are tough! My son was in his pack n play for almost a year and a half...

Honestly $600 is a lot of money to spend on a gift if you ask me. That's VERY generous of you. It's a tough time for all of us right now--most of us I think. Perhaps you could tell her that your budget is perhaps "$300" for example, so you would be happy to send her a check or cash for that amount or a gift card to JC Penny where the crib she wants is, and she can pay for the rest of it herself? Atleast part of it will be paid for. Don't feel pressured to do something you're not comfortable with, and it was a great idea to be honest with her about it. What we did for my baby shower was to tell everyone to purchase a giftcard from babysrus or just bring cash. "Please let the paretns to be choose their gift" was written in tiny letter on the bottom of the invitation. After the shower we went and picked out everything we wanted at once and came home with what we wanted. The guests were kinda happy as well because they didnt' have to spend time searching for stuff or get something that was out of their price range.
Hope that helps!!

Hi D.,
I heard on the news last night that many websites will be offering free shipping starting December 18th - if you can wait until then that might help you out. You might want to check the Baby Bargains book or Consumer Reports.com to see if the crib she wants is really great or if there are other's that are just as good. Another alternative is for you to buy just the crib and let your step daughter (or some other family member) buy the mattress.

I bought a convertible crib. My son hated being in the crib so he slept with me. Then I bought him a Little Tykes Car bed - so the convertible crib is in the garage. The problem with the convertible crib is that it is very "grown up" looking because it is made out of wood and I wanted something more fun for my son's room. I think mine turns into a full or queen size bed - which is also too big for my son's room. So although I had every intention of converting the crib to a bed, it never happened. I hope to use it one day in a guest room.

I hope this helps. Good luck with everything!
