Help! 9 Mnth Old Daughter's Fear of Her Car Seat

Ok, I hope I am not alone in this one :) My daughter is a very active, outgoing, fearless child...until her new car seat was presented to her. I bought her an Evenflow convertible one that goes from like 5-80 lbs because I didn't want to have to buy yet another one down the road. Well, she is petrified of it. I have tried to slowly get her used to it, and have even placed her fav. things in it, but she screams, and lunges for me. I haven't placed it in the car yet, rather I have just tested it while at home. I have tried 4 times to place her in it and nothing has worked. I don't know what else to do. She will be officially needing it very soon, so I thought introducing her to it would be a good idea, but it's not working. It is a lot larger then the infant one she is in, so I am sure that is probably the issue. So, do I just get her a new one (I am clueless, do they make smaller ones???) or do I just put it in the car and just let her fuss and hope she gets used to it?? Thanks!

What can I do next?

Hello M.. Well, my 5 year old had that same issue. She was terrified of the larger carseats; especially if there was a part that came over and touched her knees. You may have to take it back and find a seat similar to the one that you have for her now. Or try a pink one...try taking her with you and letting her see what is out there and let her pick it out. Make it a day out, just the two of, and ask for help getting the carseats down from the shelf so she can try the ones out that she likes. Trust me, that is way better than listening to a screaming, terrified toddler. :)

Good Luck to you!

Hi M.!

I think this happens to almost everyone. I did however purchase a smaller car seat, the evenflo triumph. This is a favorite! I have seen so many people at my daughters daycare with them. They still have the bucket seat like an infant seat, but you can raise it as the child get older. I hated to get rid of it. Cost wise it seems easier to get the biggest carseat, but you have to get what works for you. The next one you will need is a booster, and that won't be until she is 4 years or so. Her is a link to it

I hope this helps.

M.,

You're doing all the right things by letting her get used to it in the house, play with it, etc.I'm not sure if you should return it though. She's only 9 months, so I think if you just put her in it in the car, she'd only fuss this one time and then the whole thing would be over. However, if possible, you might consider returning it, and having her try out different ones at the store. If she were older, I would think the latter would be good. At such a young age, I just don't think it's going to take her long to get over this one. It can't hurt to try it just once, see how long she fusses. Good luck! When my now grown daughter was young, she would figure out how to slip out of her car seat. I couldn't make it any tighter. She just hated it so much that she wouldn't give up until she was free! Now that made driving with her in the back seat difficult! I'd look back in the mirror, and she was out again!

Hi M.,
I would place the car seat in the car. I would plan a fun adventure somewhere she loves to go. The focus at that point is on where you on going - but she is so young she may not be able to understand the concept. Go to the car, place her in the seat if she objects say "Well, we can't go bye bye if you don't get in your seat." She may not understand that the seat is for the car and trying to get her to sit in it at the house may be odd to her. If you try it in the car and it freaks her out try waiting a few weeks - it is amazing how quickly they change & grow.

Good luck,
S.

Can she see out of the car with her old one? If she cant play up that feature. As I am sure she can see out of the window with the new one. Put it in the car and take her for a drive and play up EVERYTHING! LKike say see that red car, trash truck, mail truck, anything to get her attention and being excited to be in the car seat. Play up how much of a big girl she is. Since they are recommending booster seat for children up to 4' 8" or 9" it is definetly more cost efficiant to buy a bigger seat that last longer. She will get used it. After all she could only be thinking that hey wait the seats dont belong in the house they only belong in the car. Try and introduce her to it while its in the car. If you have enough space in your car you could put it in there at the same time and buckle her favorite stuffed animal in the big one. She will probably be a little jealous, especially if you play up the animal, and move herself into it.
Good luck

i believe all kids go thru the get me out of this car seat blues. my son on occassion pushes up to make it difficult to strap him in and cries about being in his seat from time to time but soon forgets about it once we are driving and his eyes start exploring. You're not being mean by putting her in the car seat - you are protecting her - so if a lil crying occurs - this to shall pass. They have these car toys that strap on the back of the passenger seat. I would try getting one of those(for a fun distraction) and then taking her for a ride in her new carseat. Fun Rides = Good Car Seat. This great new big world is new and exciting to our youngsters but things can sometimes be overwhelming and a bit scary that's where our loving smiles and guiding nuturing nature trumps the fear :) good luck and happy holidays!
