Getting Wisdom Teeth Out

I had my 4 wisdom teeth removed this past January. I was lucky that none of them was impacted as this makes more complicated the process of removal and recovery (that's what I hear).
Definitely the day of the procedure I couldn't take care of my 2 kiddos. I was just napping all day and was overall tired. The pain wasn't huge and I didn't have to take prescribed pain killers just over the counter ones.

On the day of the procedure my face was a little bit swollen and I had some bleeding (sorry TMI) while rinsing my mouth. It took a while for the drugs to leave my system so my face felt numb for a little bit too long for my liking (couldn't talk much- perfect for kids though ;-) ).

You may want to prepare your 6 yo before you go and have the teeth removed.

It depends on your age~teenage bones are more pliable and if the teeth are impacted.
It is surgery so you will most likely want to take advantage of pain meds. The more you apply ice packs in the first 24 hours the less discomfort and swelling.
I would arrange for help. I was 27 when I had them removed, they were impacted & I couldnt return to work for a full week.
A fringe benefit was that once the swelling went down I had more sculpted cheekbones!

Let me preface my post with stating the fact that I am a big wuss when it comes to pain. Seriously, I'm a big baby!

When I got my wisdom teeth out, I was fearing the worst and it actually turned out to be a not so bad experience. I had it done that morning and was eating an omelet and hashbrowns for dinner. Now, I had to take small bites because I couldn't open my mouth all that wide (which also made brushing my teeth a chore for a few days), but I must have gotten very, very lucky. I also did not get the chipmunk cheeks or bruising.

It hurt somewhat but I didn't feel completely knocked out or out of commission. Here's to hoping for a good experience for you too!

I think it all depends on the person and the way the teeth are extracted. I had mine taken out first 2 and then one at a time and I was surprised to find I didn't really have a problem. I cannot stand mouth pain. Of course, getting all 4 out at once would be more painful. Just plan to take it easy if you can.

Whatever you do , you must go to a great oral surgeon. The recovery time will be much less. Dr. Morimoto in Joliet on Hammes is excellent.I think I was only laid up for the first couple of days. The first one for sure. you won't be able to lift for awhile though so you will need help for about a week I think. Good luck:)

I had all 4 of mine done at the same time when I was 14 years old. It definately hurt but not nearly as bad as a c-section! lol I had mine done under anesthesia... not sure if they still do it but would assume so. You will feel pain for about 2-3 days but with the meds you will be fine although maybe a bit groggy and will feel bruised for about a week but it is tolerable.

If you have a moderate-high tolerance to pain you will be able to get away with just extra ibuprofen probably. Your face will definately swell up so I would warn your 6 year old so he expects it and is not scared by it. You will look like a chipmunk with lots of nuts in your cheeks! Anyhow, I would definately get help for the first day (the day of the procedure) but the next you should be fine. Make sure you do follow ALL after care instructions though to avoid dry socket and infections! You will definately feel a ton better having them out in the long run!

I just had all four of my wisdom teeth removed about 6 months ago. I was in no shape to function the day of. I actually have a pretty high pain tolerance and I had to cry myself to sleep because it hurt so badly. The next day, I "overdid it" by going to the grocery store and came home and threw up and felt overall crappy the rest of the day. I had it done on a Monday and didn't feel great until at least Thursday.

Oh, and a fun fact they don't tell you--as the holes close up, there might be some loose tooth particles that come out months later. It happened to me. I wish I had know that could happen before that! LOL
