Getting Pregnant After Missed Abortion.

I recently had my first ultrasound and found no heartbeat. My OB thinks I'm having a missed abortion, as I'm not having any bleeding or anything. I go back on Monday to make sure there's no heartbeat, and if so will have a D&C within a couple of days. My OB told me I would only have to wait for one period after the D&C to start trying to get pregnant again. My question is, has anyone else been in this situation? How long did it take you to get pregnant again? Did you have any complications? Consecutive miscarriages/missed abortions? Any complications resulting from the D&C?

I am already super blessed with 2 little munchkins, but we really want a third. I'm really bummed about this whole thing, but taking solace that things happen for a reason, and feeling extra thankful for the 2 I've got.

Thank you so much in advance for any info/advice you can give.

Thanks SO much to all the moms who sent me advice. The D&C went smoothly with no complications, and luckily this has not been h*** o* me emotionally either. Looking forward to being able to get pregnant again soon.

I had the same issue. no heartbeat at 11 weeks. went back a week later-still no heartbeat. and did a D&C a couple days later. I got pregnant after 1 period, and had a healthy son. no complications. the one thing I didn't count on, I was really sad after. I was okay before hand, but when I got home I was incredibly sad. It didn't last more than a couple days.

I had the same thing, except with spotting. I had the D&C.
I was pregnant 6 weeks later with no issues.

I had a "missed abortion" at 13 weeks. I went into the Dr. for pelvic pain as I didn't realize I was pregnant. She thought I had fibroids and after doing an ultrasound we found that I was indeed pregnant and that the baby had died. I don't know how long ago the baby had died since I didn't know I was pregnant, but hte baby measured 13 weeks. I had a D&C under anesthesia the next day.

I had been on the mini pill when I got pregnant so we were not planning on having any more kids. The funny thing is that I got pregnant again almost exactly a year later. Again, we weren't trying to conceive but it just happened. So needless to say, it didn't affect my fertility and I now have baby #3 a healthy 4 month old boy!!! The weirdest part of it was that the baby I lost had a due date of May 21, and the baby I just had was due on May 20th. So I got pregnant again at the exact same time as the last one, just one year later.
Everything happens for a reason and although it is sad, you have to trust that the baby wasn't healthy and that is why it didn't grow.

H.,

I went through that. I went back for the follow up a week later and there was a baby in there. He's 3 now. Don't agree to a D&C unless your hormone levels are dropping and you are positive there is no baby.

Hi H.,
The same happened to me. I have 2 children - 13 and 14. I always wanted a third and went for it before I turned 40. Same situation as yours- no heartbeat, and D&C. I did begin trying after my first period. It took me about 3-4 months. No complications. I just had a beautiful, healthy baby boy. I'm in love! Trust your doctor, relax, and if getting pregnant was not the problem, then it was in a way a blessing that the first conception did not go full term - there good have been something wrong with the baby.
Good luck and many blessings for a healthy baby!

You didn't say how far along in your pregnancy you are?
Also, the heart-beat sometimes does not show up right away... for some women, longer than 6 weeks.

I had a miscarriage once, at 6 weeks. BUT I was bleeding for a few days... and in the vaginal sonogram, there was no heartbeat (where there previously was a heart beat), and the sac was empty.

I had a D&C.
My Doctor told me to wait 3 months... so the body can heal, before trying again.
I did get pregnant after that, after waiting the recommended 3 months... and I now have my 3 year old son. Born healthy, and I had a normal healthy pregnancy.

I had no complications from the miscarriage nor from the D&C.

I would not "rush" into getting pregnant right away, after a D&C. You want your body to heal.
Also, continue taking prenatal vitamins, even while trying to get pregnant.

All the best,
Susan

My first pregnancy was like that. At my 12 week visit, the doctor could not find a heartbeat so she tried with the ultrasound. She couldn't find anything so I went for blood tests and scheduled a diagnostic ultrasound. The consecutive blood tests showed the HcG hormone was decreasing and the ultrasoud found that the baby had stopped developing at about 6 weeks and no heartbeat. I chose to wait another week to see if my body would miscarry naturally without the D&C, but it didn't happen so I had the D&C. There were no complications from that, and I think I only spent that day in bed then I was fine. The doctor said we should be abstinent for 4 weeks, and we got pregnant again on the very first cycle after that (I was pregnant by about 6 weeks after the D&C). We had a perfectly healthy little boy, who is now a little wild 4-1/2 year old. I got pregnant again when he was only 6 mos old and we had another perfectly healthy boy, who is now a little wild 3 year old. That first miscarriage was an isolated event and I seemed to be very fertile afterward.

I have a friend who recently had a miscarriage after having 2 babies. Hers was not "missed" but it was very unexpected (and heartbreaking of course). She conceived again immediately afterward, within a month or less, and just gave birth to her 3rd a couple of months ago.

I am very sorry for the loss of your baby. I'm sure you're hugging the 2 you have extra tight now. I wouldn't think that you should have any difficulties conceiving again and having a healthy pregnancy.

Best wishes to you and your family.

I recently had a D&C. My baby had no heartbeat at 14 weeks. I had complications and had to stay in the hospital for 2 days because of excessive blood loss(my dr says this is rare). I just had my post op and was informed that after this type of procedure your body goes into hyper fertility and it's supposed to be easier to get pregnant. I didn't know this and have had unprotected sex so I am waiting to see what happens now! If I'm not pregnant I'm going on BC for the next year or so then I would like to try for one more. I'll be 35 in August. I have 4 children-14,11, 10, 9. Yes I know this post is old but I just wanted to share for anyone else reading it!

HI H., I am so sorry to hear about the ultrasound. My first pregnancy was a miscarraige and I went through the same unltrasound with no heartbeat. I didn't have a D&C but was lucky and had absolutely no complications after the miscarraige. My OB said to wait for 6 months just to make sure that everything was ok after the miscarraige, so I think waiting only 1 month sounds too fast. I got pregnant very quickly after the six months and now have 3 wonderful girls.

I think that you should just take your time and let your body heal after the D&C. Having a miscarraige is not the easist thing (especially if you told people about your pregnancy as I did) so let your mind and spirit heal as well. I was a "young" 35 when my miscarraige occured so I don't think age as much as health makes a difference on future preganancies. So take care of yourself, try not to think about it all the time because it seems when people get obsessed with getting pregnant, it takes longer to get pregnant!

Good luck,
G.

So sorry about your pregnancy loss. There's nothing worse than being in the ultrasound room and hearing that news. It happened to me twice, but I am happy to tell you that I am blessed with three wonderful boys now, ages 6, 4, and almost 2. Both times were like you, no bleeding, no apparent signs of pregnancy loss, but the baby just stopped developing sometime between 6-8 weeks. I found out the first time at the 10 week sonogram, and the second time at the 8 week appt. The first one was extra devastating because it was our first attempt to have a baby and I was freaking out thinking maybe I would never become a mother. The doctor recommended a D &C rather than just waiting around for bleeding to start spontaneously, which could happen sooner or later. I couldn't bear the thought of that. I'm glad I did it that way because it allowed me to grieve but also allowed me to get back in the saddle as it were and attempt to get pregnant again as quickly as possible. He recommended waiting two cycles, which was hard but we did it, and then I got pregnant immediately the next month we tried with a healthy pregnancy, no complications. This was followed 15 months later by another healthy, normal pregnancy with no problems becoming pregnant or carrying the baby. Then unexpectedly, and for no apparent reason, the we had another missed abortion when we tried for a third baby. I was really sad this time as well, but also felt a bit more philosophical about it having already been blessed with two. We did the exact same thing as before: a D&C, two month waiting period, then boom, pregnant right away with another healthy baby!
There is no reason why this will stop you from your dream of adding another little one to your family. Good luck with everything and take care.

Hi H.,

So sorry for your loss. I had an early miscarriage (no heartbeat, spotting, etc.) though not a D&C. I was told to wait one normal cycle and try again. I spotted for quite a while after the miscarriage, and had a weird, short (couple of days) bout of bleeding a couple of weeks later. Then I had a normal cycle, and conceived right after. (It took 8 months to get pregnant the first time!)The pregnancy was normal, though I had some light spotting early on, and my son is a healthy 4-year-old.

There tends to be a boost in fertility for 3 months or so following a miscarriage. Follow your Dr.'s advice, get lots of rest and keep taking those vitamins.

Good luck to you and your family.

I waited one period and got pregnant right away. I have many friends who experienced the same thing. I am now due in 4 weeks. My first pregnancy was totally text book and so the miscarriage surprised me, but I too took solace in the idea that something was not right from the start. Good luck.....everything has worked out well for us.

I had two kids. Then I had two miscarriages; one was followed by a D & C. It took about a nine months before we got pregnant and had our third child.
Good luck

Maybe I'm just Uber-fertile, but I got pregnant the first time I tried after going off the pill, unfortunately, I misscarried and just like you my doctor did a d&c because there was no heartbeat, and the fetus didn't spontaneously abort. I was told I could wait around for it to happen naturally, or have my procedure and try again after my next period. Long story short, the first time we tried, I was pregnant again. And lucky me got perfect healthy identical twins! The D&C wasn't a whole bunch of fun, but it obviously didn't have an effect on my ability to get pregnant.

Best of luck to you!

Hi H.. I'm really sorry that I've only just read your post and I hope that my 2 cents isn't too late.
Personally, I don't have experience with this type of situation, but I wanted to share with you that a friend of mine did. She took a pregnancy test & it was positive. After one or two doctor visits, there was no heartbeat to be heard. Something in her told her that her baby is okay. She waited a bit and sure enough, there was, indeed, a heartbeat.
I'm telling you this to try very hard to listen to your body and possibly your baby. I know this may sound a little out there, but in her case, she listened and she was right.
If this is not the case with you, really, I am sorry and I wish you and your family luck and blessings on having that third child that you so desire.

You have got a lot of great response. I went through this as well - The main thing I would suggest is waiting at least 2 months before getting pregnant after the DNC to allow the lining to build up in your uterus. It only took 2 months for me to get pregnant after the DNC and we have a healthy 13mo old baby girl. Good luck and be patient.

I have had this happen to me as well. The doctor advised that I wait 2-3 months so that the lining of my uterus could grow strong and thicker because of the D&C. After 4 or five months I had what's termed as a chemical pregnancy. 2 months after that I got pregnant again and now my daughter is 4 1/2 months old. The whole situation is very emotional and you never feel settled until you have that baby in your arms. The best advice I can give is to relax and let it happen. Don't stress about timing and pregnany tests. Let your mind concentrate on other things and it will happen and successfully. Good luck!

I have had four pregnancies. The first was miscarried naturally at 6 weeks - dignosed as a blighted ovum. Told to wait 2-3 months more for emotional reasons, but if we felt ready we could try before. Doctor asked that we wait until after my first period though, as they use that event to help with the date of conception. 3 months later I was pregnant again, only to find out that the baby's heartbeat had stopped beating somewhere around 7-8 weeks. Had a D&C at 11 weeks, as loss wasn't discovered until 10 weeks. No complications from the D&C, took less than 15 minutes in the procedure room. 2 months later pregnant again, gave birth to a healthy baby girl in Jan 2007. Now I'm pregnant again and due in Jan 2010.

During this time the most important thing is to follow your Doctor's suggestions. Keep taking your prenatal vitamins and folic acid. Expect to not do much after your D&C, like lifting, for a few days. Keep some friends close by for emotional support in case you need it. Sorry for your loss.

H., very sorry for your loss. I was 6 weeks when I took the test and 8 weeks when the doctor gave me the news. I didn't realize how upset I would be initially, but soon realized I would rather have a healthy baby and that that one just wasn't meant to be. I could have waited for the miscarriage to happen naturally but I was leaving the country a few weeks after the news and I wanted to just get it over with so I could start trying again.

It took 8 weeks for me to get my period again and 6 months to get pregnant. I am a little older so that's probably why it took so long.

I now have a sweet, healthy and delightful 10 month old girl.

that EXACT thing happened to me. the fetus stopped growing at 6 weeks and i had no signs so i had a DNC. when i went in for it, my nurse told me to be prepared because DNC's have a way of "resetting" your body and a lot of their patients get pregnant very shortly after having one.
i was skeptical, but sure enough, 2 months (so on the first try!) after the procedure i got pregnant and had a perfectly healthy boy. he's now 18 months.

i have even heard of people having multiple miscarriages with DNC's and then having a full term healthy baby. i would not worry at all!
