When I got pregnant I swore to myself that I was not going to be an over-protective, worry about every little issue mom but so far that isn't going so well.

I am worried that my 1 month old may be gaining weight too fast-can that happen? He was 8 pounds 12 ounces when he was born and he is one month old and already 11 pounds!! He has gained almost 3 pounds in only one month. Our one month doctors appointment is next week and I will talk to his doctor about his weight then. But does anyone know if babies do gain weight this fast?

Thanks!
R. N

I think it depends on the baby........I don't know a whole lot in the area but I know my son gained weight really fast and slowed down after about a year. My son is freakin tank though he's 22 months weighs 32 pounds and is 31 inches tall. He's almost always been in the 98th percintile in weight and height but the doctor says he's healthy and thats what matters..........hope all goes well.......and we all worry it's part of being a mom :-)

As a mother of four beautiful, healthy and now fairly skinny children I can tell you it is perfectly fine! All four of my children were 12 lbs or more by there first appt and when born btwn 8 and 9 lbs. They were all in fairly high percentiles until they were 6 months old then started evening out. My oldest is now 14 and doesn't quite weigh 100 lbs at 5 ft 5 in. I also did both formula and breastfeeding with all but my oldest, who was just formula fed and that doesn't seem to have much effect on weight one way or the other. Hope this helps, good luck. It sounds like you have a very healthy baby!

Every child is different and have different factors contirbuting to weight gain. My little guy is 3 months now and is close to 14 lbs, but he is very long and lean, and I'm sure he has his dad's metabolism! (My husband can eat anything!)
Are you breast feeding or formula feeding or a combo? I mainly breast feed but also supplement during the week while I'm at work, even though I pump. Formula is more fattening than breast milk and is not as easily digested, so babies fed exclusively by formula tend to gain weight faster. That's not a universal statement, though. At least you get to chat with the doctor at his 1 month check up!

I remember feeling the same way. Both of my babies were very big and gained atleast a pound per week after birth. I had these visions of carting around a 40 pound 1 year old. But just as my doctor assured me they did end up slowing down as they got older so don't worry. ;-)

I don't think you have anything to worry about. My baby was 9.6 pounds when he was born and he gained weight very rapidly. Most doctors will tell you that gaining weight (especially in the early months)is a sign of a healthy baby.

Good luck to you.

Your baby is gaining weight fast because that's what he needs to do. Don't worry! He's going to get very, very c***by and big before he finally starts crawling. Boys especially are bigger! Talk to your doctor, but my experience (nanny and mother) is that he's perfect just the way he is. Development is VERY different for all kids. It's very normal for babies to gain a lot of weight very quickly. They need to do this to prepare for proper growth. Whatever you do, *don't* put him on a diet. There's no such thing as the mythical 'average,'child, and even if there was, your child is totally unique his in genetic makeup. Trust the process and trust this very individual and special baby!

Your son is fine, and more normal than you think. My son was an 8 lb. premie...yes I'm sure he was a premie, born @ 36 weeks, in NICU for 10 days with respritory distress...and he just got bigger every month. It's 'normal' for babies to triple their birthweight by their 1st birthday, but my son weighed 24 lbs at 9 months! He was 31" tall on his 2nd birthday and wore size 4T clothes, and people thought he was 'slow to develop' because he looked so much OLDER than he was. He was never fat, he would gain weight and then grow into it, keep growing and then gain weight again. He grew like this even though he was a MAJOR 'spit-up' baby until about 8 months! He was always a good sleeper and kids grow while they're sleeping...who knows?? As long as your "big guy" is healthy and eats nutritious food, that's all that matters! By the way, be sure to record his HEIGHT on his 2nd birthday...the theory is that his adult height will be within 1-2 inches of that number DOUBLED. My 31" tall 2 yr old is now my 6'2" college junior!

R.,
It's very normal to worry about every little thing as a first time mom. My son was born 7 weeks early weighing 4.11 lbs. and he was at 11 lbs by about 6 weeks old. Every baby is different. My nephew had rolls and rolls of baby fat when he was an infant. It didn't mean anything. He's a healthy 17 year old now.

Hi, R.! I was just reading the responses to your post and I have to say I'm really quite relieved. I took my 6-week old daughter to the doctor yesterday and she weighed 11 lbs 7 oz. 85th percentile! She was in the 65th percentile at her last appointment. (She was 8 lbs 10 oz at birth.) It seemed like a major weight gain to me, but our pediatrician was unconcerned, so she must be all right. Even still, I think I might just cut down on my own sugar intake. (She's breastfeeding exclusively.) My 1st child was 10 lbs 2 oz at birth and he gained weight pretty rapidly - was always in the high 90 percentiles. My second son was 8 lbs 14 oz and was always pretty average for weight. They're all pretty healthy and at good weights for their ages. (Okay, my 6-year-old is a little husky, but that's my fault for agreeing to so many McDonald's trips! We're doing something about that now.) So, anyway, R., I think our babies are really just fine. Thanks for the question - I needed the answer as much as you did. :)

Congratulations!!!!! Get your doctors opinion, but if he says that he's eating to much and will be fat, please get a second opinion elsewhere. I have two boys, 3 yrs old and 5 months old. My husband also has a 15 year old from a previous marriage. All of them where fat as babies. My step son won a champion c***by contest! He is sclupted and very healthy.

My first son was born at 7lbs 6oz. I'm looking at his weight recording now and it says, 11.12lbs at 34 days, 16.8lbs at 19wks...He got so fat and adorable! He breastfed and almost never ate solids. He started to really eat when he turned 2 years old. Now he's thin, strong and active.

My 5 month old was born at 7lbs 2oz. He's was 18lbs 4oz at 21 weeks! I think he c***bier than my first.

My best friend has had super c***by babies too. My husband was tubby as a child and so was my brother....Don't worry. I don't know if it's the norm, but it is common. And very cute! He'll loose it when he starts walking.

i think it's perfectly normal! i'm not sure of the site right now, but if you google "baby growth chart" i'm sure it will come up with a site that would show the percentiles for height and weight. i know my daughter was always in like the 90th percentile for weight and height but it's fine as long as their weight and height are in proportion to one another. and don't worry, your dr. will let you know what is normal or not for weight gain!

Both of my sons gained weight really fast as well. My first son gained about 4 lbs a month for the first 4 months, and about 1-2 lbs every month after. He was over 12 lbs at 1 month and 28 lbs at one year. My second son has been gaining at the same pace, he was also 20 lbs at his 4 month check up (he is now 5 months and almost 22lbs. My pediatrician has said there is nothing to worry about as long as the height and weight are happening at the same pace - meaning that your son should probably be in the higher percentile for height as well. Some of the gross motor skills (like rolling over, crawling and walking) will probably happen on the later side.

Hope this helps - L.

Well every baby is different but yes that can happen. I am speaking from experience because both my kids gained weight fast and I was always concerned about their weight and height. If breast feeding you may have a bigger baby than formula fed babies. He will gain weight rapidly till 6 mos then it does slow down!! My son was like 14 pounds at about 4mos and my daughter was almost 15 pounds. Now my BF is very tall and a big guy so some of theirs is through him. I have tall kids and they are always off the charts for their height. Don't overly worry about his weight of course ask the doctor always but when he start crawling his c*** will come off!

holy moly you've got a good eater! He's fine! I'd maybe ask the Dr. when you go, but as for now I wouldn't worry as long as you haven't noticed anything weird or out of the ordinary.
BTW, how do you have the time to scrapbook? I have a 4 year old and STILL don't have the time!!!!
