I am looking for new ideas to halp my daughter with her eczema. She has seen a dermatologist and has many rx creams, lotions, ointments, as well as OTC things too, you name it we have tried it. But maybe there is something out there I have not done- her eczema is bad on her wrists, tops of hands, creases of elbows and lt eyelid. The only thing I have used on her eyelid is Aquaphor as I am nervous to use any of those rx creams on that sensitive of an area. We have used a humidifier in her room and really lotioning up her hands/wrists and covering them with cotton socks for the night. The Derm also recommended Benadryl for night to basically knock her out so she wont scratch but I am not really for drugging unnecessarily and the socks seem to stay on all night. So anyother ideas for me and my girl?
My son, who is 7 months, has eczema pretty bad on his face. I took him to the allergist and he is allergic to wheat. I think he is also mildly allergic to his formula because he is constantly rubbing at his head and his neck never seems to completely clear up. Good luck, I know it is frustrating. S.
I have eczema patches on my legs that have been there forever but what I use is the Equate Triple Antibiotic Ointment, mostly at night, to help keep it hydrated and to stop the itching. Most lotions have water as the main ingredient, which dries out the skin. Therefore, since using the ointment, I have noticed great improvement in my eczema. That's what works for me.
Hi my son has a mild case of eczema, but my friends son has a severe case of it, she has tried everything, he even gets shots once a week, he has been in the hospital on strong medication and nothing has worked. She is going to start looking a at natural healing lotions without steroids. I had just seen an article on psoriasis(?) which is alot like eczema for this cream called skin zinc, you can buy it at walgreen, cvs, riteaide. It says look for the purple box in either first aide or skin care. I don't know if it will help but it shows a severe case, and it also says steroid free. Good luck, D.
We've battled with eczema for several years now - it's so frustrating. Have you found the source of the problem? We found ours to be allergies - sensitivies and completely revamped our house so it's much better now.

COuld she be allergic to something in her diet? I am just curious. She could have a food allergy. Jusy my guess.
I have read research to indicate, if it is not an allergy, the liver is involved.
Which means the liver is overloaded and is sending toxins to the surface - skin.
Help the liver to detox, so it can do its job properly.
I used the Aveeno bathwash for eczema then after that i totally covered him with aquaphor before bed time .. there was a point this simmer when my son was seriously almost fully covered with his eczema.. it sucked.. I also got a prescription to help with the itch because it they itch it just makes it worse. I was also told that they shoudl only be in the bath for a few mintues and then when taken out dont completely dry them off and have them in lotion within 2 minutes when the moisture is still there. hope everything gets better .. eczema must really suck especially for kids so i hope she feels better
The benadryl will help with the scratching. They use to make a benadryl cream that my sister used on her daughters eczema when she was a baby(she pretty much had it on every inch of her body, even down "there" some time, ouch!). She's now 11 and has out grown her eczema so I'm not sure the cream is still out there. It worked really well. Another thing my sister did was eliminated any dies and scents from soaps and creams she used. She purchased soap that a lady made in her kitchen. It all helped and my neice out grew the eczema about 6 years ago. Good luck!

My neighbors son suffers from this too. She knows of the business I have and called me one day and asked if I had any suggestions. I gave her a sample of a lotion and told her to use it twice a day. She called me 2 days later and was amazed at the difference it made. I told her "Yes, this does help tremendously, but you need to try and eliminate the cause so it doesn't keep coming back."
We had a long talk and I explained about what I have learned over the last couple of years. She made some simple changes around her house and her son no longer suffers from this. Her Doctor was shocked at the difference in his skin.
Now I am not claiming this will work for everyone, but it is a very easy place to start and it won't hurt anything thats for sure. In her sons case it seemed to be irritations to his skin from certain ingredients in her laundry products, soap, shampoos etc. even right down to the lotions she used to help the eczema. Basically anything that came in contact with her sons skin. I introduced her to a company and explained their product line to her. She got an account with them and switched to using these products.
After a few weeks I asked how he was doing and she said fine except the one side of his face and the back of his neck still had some. I was baffled and just couldn't figure out why. Then I asked her if she was washing everything with this new laundry soap. She said yes all of HIS stuff. I kind of smiled and said "Ok, but not your stuff? Think about it, how do you hold him during feeding time? Where does his face and neck rest?" She said "I didn't even think about that!"
She now washes everything in the house in this laundry soap.
The clothes were just part of it. They have a brand new home and she is keeps her house extremely clean. Another source of harsh residues coming into contact with her child's skin right down to the bathtub cleaners. Again something she never thought about. The more we talked the more she realized just how many things come in contact with her sons skin everyday.
I also talked to her about where his world takes place in a day. I knew he was too young to be up and running around yet.
I asked her where does he spend his day? She said "Well usually on the floor playing with his toys and looking around." I knew they had a new house full of new carpeting and this seems to be one of the worst things for people with sensitive skin. I told her to be sure to get him OFF the carpet.
I know it is new and clean, but the chemicals they use when they make carpeting can be skin irritants. Not to mention the fumes that come off of it can create problems with the respiratory system. I recently found an article about a study they did in regards to these chemicals affecting the immune system as well. She started putting a blanket down (washed in the new detergent) on the floor for him to play on.
With all these simple changes her son no longer suffers from this horrible problem. Again I am not saying this will work for everyone. It is just a simple place to start and worth checking into.

I agree with Lisa's response, check him for allergies. I had a friend in High School she strugled with excema her whole life, she also had cats her whole life. She went in for an allergy test and found out her little pets weren't the best idea for her, they are gone and so is her exema!

I had Eczema....mine typically was on my arm, wrists, and hands. I found nothing that really works and hated the thought of using ointment with steriods because I have a toddler.
My chiropractor told me this. A more holistic approach....watch your daughters in take of sugar (juice, breads, ect.). I also take a probiotic pill (very small) Natrol Biobeads Probiotic Acidophilus http://www.natrol.com/digestive-health/4042-biobeads/
This probotic is also in yogurt, but yogurts are loaded with sugar - which defeats the purpose. I don't know how picky your daughter (plain unsweetened yogurt may also help).
Consult with your doctor on such a young child take this or it may be an alternative when she's a little older. My eczema has cleared up and I have had an issue since!

My daughter is now 19, I started using Eucerin cream on her eczema when she was 2. This product has been around for many years and I would swear by it. I never put it around her eyes, but I did put it on her checks. If you go to the website I listed above and then click on the button "see what people think" there is a testimonial from a mom and amazing pictures of her little girl at age 2 with atopic eczema on her face and video of her now as a "normal" looking beautiful 7 yr old little girl. There is sound also if you have speakers the mom tells of their story.
I haven't had to buy this in years as my daughter thankfully out grew this, as others have stated before me. When I was buying though I was getting it at K-mart, so I would imagine any local store of that type would have it. Good luck!
Use Oil of Olay or Dove soap. Definitely don't use Dial or Ivory, they are the worst for eczema. Good luck.
