Dry Skin Patches

Recently, I have noticed a couple of areas (stomach and chin) that have dry patches that are not going away. The areas look a little red and irritated at times, but they do not appear to bother my daughter. Can anyone recommend a good, safe, cream and/or moisturizer to use on these areas?

Hi L.! Arbonne has a WONDERFUL baby line that has been proven to have excellent results with eczema. I still use the oil on my kids and they are 7 and 9!

My pediatrician recommended Aveeno baby lotion but I didn't like the results so I switched to Gold Bond Ultimate Healing lotion. I apply it after his nightly bath and it seems to work well.

Best of luck!

Eucerin CREAM (not the lotion). Walmart carries their own brand of it for less than half the price! Ingredient list is exactly the same. We have been on it for a week or so, per our pediatrician, it seems to be working nicely.

My son had these same patches. One on his cheek and one on his chin. Happened right about the same time - 10 months.(They turned out to be eczema which in my case got much worse later.) We used a 50/50 mix of Eucerin cream (The CREAM that comes in the tub, not the lotion) and hydrocortisone cream, and this really helped keep the pathces at bay. Yes it is safe to use on the face. I would be very careful of "natural" products containing nut oils, as some do. If it is eczema this can be related to allergy (including nuts) and can be made worse by applying this. That's kind of a lot of info to take in and it may not apply to you, (hopefully not) but that is what happened in my case so just an FYI!

Hi L.,

Sounds like eczema or contact dermatitis which can be caused by certain harsh ingredients in soaps, laundry detergents, etc. Before using anything on your baby, even baby care products, you should go to www.cosmeticsdatabase.com (Skin Deep Cosmetic Safety Database by Environmental Working Group)to research the ingredients and safety of them. It has a special section for Baby Care products. Many baby products contain formaldehyde, a known carcinogen which can also cause dry skin issues.

Also, anyone out there pregnant should watch this video www.ewg.org/kidsafe It is 23 minutes but well worth watching and very educational on helping keep your baby safe from chemical exposure before birth.

I also can recommend the Renew Lotion mentioned here on a few of the posts, it's very good and I've been using their non-caustic products for 4 years now due to chemical sensitivity issues of my own and fibromyalgia. But, you really need to also look into the detergents and other products you use that come into contact with your baby's skin or clothing.

I hope this helps you and your baby,

T.

Sounds like eczema to me. Aquaphor is a good cream/ointment (they make both) for eczema. If it gets worse, have the doctor prescribe a steriod cream for it. I noticed only one other person before me mentioned allergies. PLEASE talk to the doctor about possible allergies. 3 out of every 4 children with eczema eventually develop asthma or hayfever. If you talk to your doctor now, you can possibly prevent this.

Dear L.,

Your daughter may have Eczema. My eldest daughter has that also. She get dry patchy, somewhat rash looking on her forearms. Her pediatrician recommended she use Aveeno bath moisterizer when she showers or takes a bath. She also uses Aveeno moisterizer all over her body. It helps keep the rash spost under control. But when it does get really bad, I rub those spots with hydrocortizon. It helps with the swelling, redness and itchiness.

Good Luck,
E.M

Try Aveeno... I've use it on my son for the same thing, and it helped. I find it at my local grocery store or any local drug store/pharmacy. It's over the counter.

It's called "Aveeno Baby Soothing Relief Moisture Cream" w/natural colloidal oatmeal, soothes and relieves dry skin even dry skin from Eczema. Moisturizes for 24 hours. Clinically Proven.

Good luck,
Susan

Hi L.. I have something that has worked for my sister who gets little scaly dry patches. It also helped with my friend's son who has sensitive skin & had eczema. It's called Renew and you can get it from a Wellness Company called Melaleuca. It does not cost much and studies have shown that it is 7xs more effective than Eucerin.
Johnson & Johnson products have formaldehyde (Quaternium-15) which is a known carcinogen, so they are not exactly "safe" although some doctors may recommend them. I use Renew as baby lotion. I've also used it in combination with another one of their products for a red, scaly diaper rash associated with a food sensitivity that my daughter had. Works great. I always keep a few bottles on hand.
As for the location of the rash: could the rash be associated with detergent or a food that your daughter has been eating?
You may want to see if that's the case. If you are looking for safer, more naturally based products to use but are also looking to keep in a budget, let me know. Since we absorb quite a bit of "funny stuff" from the products people use every day, this is something I'm passionate about. I can definitely help you.

Sounds like it could be eczema. We use Eucrine cream or Baby Aquaphor, Aveeno on our son. He doesn't have eczema but sensitive skin that can get dry and pimply. After his bath the doctor recommended the Aquaphor. It's also great for a whole lot of other things. We also found that our son has allergies and also allergic to sunblock. We saw an allergist and he contacted a specialist friend of his that recommended Vanicream. It doesn't have any of the major leading allergens causing reactions. Have to buy it online, but it works. No break outs or dry skin. All other sunblocks, including sensitive skin one's, made him break out.
You may also want to take your daughter in to see the doctor because usually eczema is a sign of food allergies. Good luck.

L.,

My daughter has VERY sensitive skin. When she was about 1 mo. old we noticed dry, irritated patches on her knees, legs, tummy, and at times on her face. It got so bad that she would actually try to scratch them when she started developing use of her hands (3 mo. old). We tried everything in the J&J and Aveeno lines, changing laundry habits, etc. but nothing worked and it seemed like the spots were getting worse at times. My final resort was the Burt's Bees brand. It was wonderful. Within 36 hrs the spots were gone and she was soooo much happier.
I learned she was allergic to alcohol just like my mother-in-law and her sister. Every so often I have to put lotion on her (she's now 10 mo. old) but the Burt's Bees shampoo/body wash seems to work its magic by itself keeping her skin at a normal pH.

Eucerin and Cetaphil are great products.

My brother has ichthyosis (sp?)--literally, "fish-scale skin"--a problem that results in horribly dry, irritated skin from his infancy on (now he is in his twenties). My husband and son have pyloris ketosis (sp?)--"bumpy skin"--a genetic skin thing--which causes red, irritated bumps that get worse in hot, dry weather.

Just use gentle, non-soap cleansers and moisturize! :-) Call your doc if you are concerned. You could try using a gentle detergent for her clothing as well. I have found that 100% cotton jammies and clothing are best for my son's skin--cotton breathes.

My 7 year old son has the same problem with his skin. I use Renew from Melaleuca and it works great. I have many friends with kids with eczema and use Renew and we have found that it not only works faster but it works longer than any other brand. Also changing laundry soap can help with it as well. If you have any questions on how it works let me know.

Hello L.,

I know you the post you are receiving are from Mary Kay, Avon, etc. reps.

So, I will make this very short. My son has very dry, sensitive skin. I use to use J&J on him till about 3mns old when he started to get red, bumpy, dry patches on his tummy, so the doc told me to use a few other over the counter moisturizers.

But, I decided to use what I used when I was pregnant with him. Its from Soul Scents and its called Belly Butter. When I was pregnant my husband made me switch all my body products to all natural all organic, which has turned most of my lifestyle now to all natural, all organic body products for both myself, but for my husband and now 3yr old son.

Soul Scents Belly Butter super moisturizes the skin (yet doesn't leave it feel greasy.) I gained over 50lbs with my son and I don't have one stretch mark, because my skin was so moisturized (oh yeah it didn't even itch when it was stretching)

Also, you could try the Soul Scent Skin Sorbet (sugar scrub) for just the patchy areas till you get it under control. Won't hurt your daughter at all, I used it on my son at 4mns old.

Everyone comments on who beautiful my son's skin is. You can check out the products if you like, just send me a message via mamasource and I'll give you the links.

Best of luck,
M.

Medela brand has a cream that works. I haven't used it personally but I have a friend who uses it for her son who has severe eczema. For my daughter who had a milder case when she was younger, we used Cetaphil moisturizing lotion and our pediatrician told us to use only Johnson & Johnson bath soap to bathe. My daughter is now 15 months and no signs of any irritation for months now.

Hi L., She may be developing some sort of ezcema. My youngest started developing it and I had to switch the cleanser and lotion I use on her. I use Eucerin cleanser and I have her on prescription lotion (called Mimix). You may be able to get her pediatrician to prescribe it. You may also want to get a humidifier. This summer when we lived in Nashville my daughter's ezcema completely disappeared because of how humid it is there. Good luck to you and your little one.

i would consult a doctor but i do notice that grape seed extract is great for little skin flare ups and i use it on both of my little girls. you can find it in the product "butt naked baby", their oil has grape seed extract as the first ingredient. or, you can go out and get the extract but you might want to mix it with a carrier oil just so the concentrate isn't so much right on the skin. you can talk to any homeopathic person or google it online just to make sure that you can use it directly or if you need to mix it with something else.......

Hi L.,

For ezema you want to make sure that you are using a lotion free of dyes or fragrance and mineral oil. Mineral oil is a gasoline by-product (Yuck!) It clogs the pores and pulls all of the moisture to the surface (so we think that we are moisturized for a little while). Arbonne has a great baby line that has had amazing results for little ones. It is made without dyes, fragrances or mineral oil so it really penetrates the skin and heals. If you are interested you can go to arbonne.com and check it out. If you don't know a rep and need help getting it at 35% off you can contact me if you'd like, if you choose to give it a try.
