Do You Love Your Diaper Bag? If So, I Want to Know!

Dear friends,

I'm in the market for a new diaper bag. I am currently using a backpack from REI. It only has one main compartment and two smaller ones in the front (like a typical school backpack). Any recommendations on diaper bags? I can't find things in it!

Here's my criteria:
-must have TONS of pockets (I love to organize!)
-stroller clips (tired of carrying the "diaper bag" on my back)
-must have short straps too because when I carry my baby in the Ergo on my back, I need
to carry it in my hands (not on the shoulder)...

I've already tried a small backpack diaper bag from California Creations, a FuBu backpack, a Carter's traditional tote diaper bag (no stroller clips) and a small "purse-like" diaper bag... I'm at a loss here....

A little about me: I am an over packer and snacker. I usually pack 1-2 outfits (tops and bottoms) as well as shoes, snacks (for my baby and myself) --both cold (needs insulation) and dry, bibs, table toppers, floor toppers, burp cloths, changing pad, a small blanket, diapers, wipes, comb, sunblock for baby and myself, small purse for me with my essentials, big wallet, sunglasses, camera, hair clips, tylenol and/or teething tablets, 18 oz. water bottle for me, 12 oz. water bottle for baby, 12 oz. Foogoo thermos for baby, books for baby, toys for baby, hat/shoes for baby, sweater for myself and sweater for baby.... and this is just to name a few off the top of my head. So, I'm looking for functional, spacious and oraganized. What kind of bags are you using? Do you have one that you like? Any suggestions that you have would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you VERY much!!

I loved it. Didn't look at many and definately got lucky with this one. I had a Skip Hop as well. Got it at Target and paid $30 on sale. Here is the link to one similar to the one I had - http://www.skiphop.com/product/22000.html

Also loved the stroller clips. Mine had short and long straps.

Kathy, I love my skip hop. It's light, a lot of compartment, and most of all it's cool looking :)

This is a great diaper bag/backpack with lots of space and compartments.

I dont' think it has stroller clips though. It sounds to me like your diaper bag would tip over your stroller! Be careful! You can buy carabiners from a hardware store if you want to clip it.

I actually use a diaper bag as my "carry it all" purse- it's that good. It has an adjustable strap (with shoulder cushion) and backpack straps too. Lots of sections, bottle holders on the outside (good for my commuter mug). It might be great for its original purpose- as a diaper bag. It's from Loom Life, but I did a quick search on them and found them on Amazon and Diaperbags.com. I have the "Bandicoot" version, but there are a few other styles to consider. Not inexpensive, but a lot less than many purses out there! Good luck in finding one that's perfect for you.

I have a petunia pickle bottom backpack diaper bag. I had 4 other diaper bags before this one and I decided to splurge when I had my 2nd child. They cost around $160-$200, but are beautiful and have many pockets, stroller clip attachments, built in changing table and many pockets. I got the backpack one, but it also has a shoulder strap too. I ordered mine online from Nordstroms. My bestfriend got one with her 1st child over 2 years ago and it has held up great.

I haven't found one yet, using a make-up bag that works well so far. but have you thought about having a seamstress make you one -so you get exactly what you want??? I just thought of that myself- thanks!

I believe BumbleBag may meet your criteria. Depending on the model you get it's got variable straps & stroller clips, lots of pockets & you can get it in a purse style, back pack style, or messenger bag. I purchased a couple on ebay. I also got a Stork Sak which I loved & used most because it doubled as my purse, but it won't meet your criteria. Shop ebay for the best bargains as these brands are pretty pricey!

Like you, I have tried several diaper bags - maybe a variety of over 20, no joke. I am a mom of 3. About 2 years ago I discovered a backpack by Dakine, its a surf/skate backpack. Here is what I love, it has many compartments, it is insulated. I can carry a change of clothes, snacks, diapers, etc and I don't look like a sherpa! I keep it organized via Zip lock bags. I have taken it to the snow, beach, etc and it still looks new! I love this bag and wish I had discovered it sooner, as I would have saved SO much money!!!

Hope this helps.

Hi Kathy,

I am almost the complete opposite when it comes to the diaper bag. With twin daughters, I try to travel as light as possible and only take what I absolutely need in the diaper bag. I also had a back-up bag in the car with changes of clothes and some of the other things you mentioned. With that said, I loved my Land's End diaper bag. All of my sister-in-laws and co-workers got their bags at Lands End. I actually found it too big for me. It does not have stroller clips, but I bought simple hooks from Babies R Us and that worked for me. Good luck.

I'm currently using one I got for free from the Kaiser Hospital. I don't know that you could get one or not, but I really like it. It's not huge, but does have a white liner inside so you can actually see what's in there; several compartments and it came with a couple extra plastic zipper bags and an ice pack.
However, I'm writing to suggest another alternative. I too like to be over prepared, but personally I don't want to actually have to carry all of that everywhere I go as I don't always need it. What I've done is pack two bags. One I keep in the car with all the things I don't use as often and I am dilligent about re-stocking items as I use them. Just a thought that helped me...
Best wishes!
