Do You Cut Your Kids Hair?

Better question, when did you/will you STOP cutting their hair yourself?

If you're a hair stylist, you don't count ;)

I've never cut anyone's hair before except trimmed my own. When the girls were born, I cut their hair myself (NOT paying $12 plus tip for these wiggle worms!) I do a decent job. With my son, I don't even know where to begin, so I'm sure once he HAS hair, I'll pay to get it cut.

I just took (ON PURPOSE, LOL, it wasn't an accident) a good 6-7 inches off my 5 year olds hair. She hates her hair long. It was an okay job... I'm very critical of myself, so yeah, I look at it and think 'oh kid, your mom cuts your hair!!'.... but everyone else said it flattered her. It's super short in the back, then gets longer along her jawline in front, with long side swept bangs the same length. Very grown up, but cut, and she likes it.

I freakin lucked out at how well it turned out. I'm not sure how much longer I can do this!

So do you cut your kids hair? Did you stop? Will you stop? If so, when?

I guess I just don't want to send them off to school and get made fun of ;)

What can I do next?

Yep!!

I cut the kids hair! I also groom the dog...but he is MORE fun because he 'lets' me carve initials and give him mohawks... He never complains!

I have saved a small fortune in haircuts over the years...

***maybe should send the 'olders' a bill??*** lol

I would only do my boys' hair if I was giving them summer buzzes. I have NO sense of symmetry, so they'd look horrible if I tried any other style.

My husband cuts our son's hair with clippers and plans to teach me. I cut our oldest daughter's hair with scissors. I've only cut 2-3 inches at the most, but have considered cutting off all of it. :) I think we'll continue to do it ourselves until they are old enough to say they want to go to a barber or salon AND pay for it themselves. :)

I'm not a stylist - but I grew up with a Mom who is. I've picked up a lot of stuff from her AND I worked at the salon she was at as the Receptionist and got to see a lot of other styles. I'm naturally artistic to boot - so I'll stop when my daughter can pay for her own haircuts LOL

My husband - I cut his hair too... and WHOA does he always looks great after I give hom a haircut and trim up everything. Of course he doesn't agree, but I see the women looking at him and my Mom always complements him after I've done his hair.

I stopped when DD turned 3. She has long hair and we're only getting her bangs trimmed... she would not sit still for me and it turned into a 20 minute affair to get it straight. At the hairdresser she will sit still and be done in 2 minutes. Our hairdresser does bang trims for little ones for free.
Good luck.

I've cut my kids hair all the time when they were little. It was okay but usually looked totally fine after a week or so especially if I had a little oopsy...LOL Anyway, at around age 12, I decided to take them to get their hair cut. The hairdresser told my daughter that she can tell I cut her hair and that it's about time she stopped her mommy hair cuts. I was irritated at her rudeness but I agreed with her...LOL But my kids HATED their haircuts at the hairdressers. My kids are boy= almost 18 and girl= 16 and they will only let me cut their hair. They said that the hairdressers don't do as good a job as me. Who is a total amateur. I always thought that if I did it enough, I'd get good at it. I don't think I'm good at it but I have 5 kids a hubby and me who never go to hairdressers and we all clean up nice. I think you do a much better job than I do so as long as your kids don't mind, keep it up! =D

I gave up cutting my son's hair when he was 3 yrs. He was awful. But then I went back to it around age 8/9 yrs due to the expense. Now he is almost a teen and there is NO WAY I would DARE to touch his hair. He is WAAAAYYYY too particular.

Daughter has long hair with no bangs. I trim the split ends off regularly, and occasionally will take a few inches off the ends (usually at the end of the summer when the pool and sun/sand has done a number on it). When she decides she wants to have it "done", then I will take her. I would be afraid to try to cut any sort of "style" for her.... LOL. She just turned 10.

I cut my daughter's hair. It is just all one length, past her shoulders. Easy.

My son goes to a barber. I can't cut layered boy hair.

I can only do one length hair.

I cut my bangs though.

I also cut my Husband's hair- it is just buzzing it with clippers. His hair is cropped. Being he does not have as much hair, now. Maybe from being married to me! LOL LMAO!
But he looks good in cropped buzzed hair.

I am not a hair stylist nor as has anyone ever taught me anything about cutting hair, but I currently cut my brother's hair, my husband's hair and my son's hair. I also trim my own hair. I guess I do a pretty good job, because they keep coming back for more. lol. Once, my husbands co worker came over for a hair cut and I was like.. umm.. im not a hair stylist. He still wanted me to cut it. I was pretty nervous and screwed it up big time. I felt so bad that I gave him $20 to get it professionally fixed.

Yes, I cut my own kids' hair. I have an 8 year old boy and we just use the buzzers to clip it short every few months. He has been liking it longer lately, so next time I will pay to get it done. My girls are 6 and 3 and I cut theirs, too. I have taken them in to have it cut before, and there has only been one time that I thought it looked better than when I cut it. (unfortunately, that hairstylist has always been booked 6 months solid every time I call, so we have never returned).

I've had long straight hair for decades and usually have my mom or my husband trim it a few times a year. I also cut my kids hair, not always well (usually okay though). My 5 year old hates the hair dresser but his wavy hair is pretty forgiving. My 2 year old daughter has had one professional trim to fix my haircut already. It's hard to get bangs even on a wiggly toddler!

In my family my mom cut our hair until halfway through grade school (my sister got 1 bad haircut from mom and I just grew my hair long). My MIL cut her kids hair when they were kids too.

My husband cuts HIS hair and my SON's hair with the buzz clippers. He does a pretty good job. I have to touch up my husband's neck area and make it look nice. Lately I've been trimming my own hair myself (luckily I have a head full of curls, so a mis-cut here and there aren't too noticeable).

I would guess we'll cut my son's hair until he is old enough to do it himself (high school?) or until he wants to pay for someone else to do it.

Yep, I cut my son's hair. Short on top, even shorter on the sides and back, and faded nicely. He likes his hair short. :)

And I cut my dad's hair. Same way.

And my husband's. Same way.

And my mom's.

And my cousin's.

And so on, and so on...

NO, I'm not a stylist, but for some reason, I do a pretty good job, and people trust me (Lord only knows why! LOL)

And I will continue cutting my son's hair because quite frankly, the few times I did pay $15 + tip for a "professional" to cut it, I've come home EVERY TIME and tidied it up because they did a pi$$ poor job. So I will continue to do it myself!

Daughter - thick, curly, long. Yes, I cut hers. It's easy and no one can see the mistakes.

Son - straight, blond, fine. No way. I tried one day and you could see every possible hack and cut and slice. Horrible. I take him to a nice place in town that charges us $6. They're wonderful! And it's worth it.

My mom still cuts my hair, she's not a hair dresser either, no formal training... she cuts my dad and trims my daughters. I'm not a big fashion stylist type of person, I have one length but I have had her put in layers before, pretty simple Jane type. I sometimes cut my own hair but I always mess up on the back... I cut my own bangs...
Now my husband cuts his own hair which he's great at, still not sure how he does such a great job. He's a perfectionist too, so he does a great job. He just recently did our youngest son's hair, with a little fade on top. He cut our middle son's hair about 2 years ago, but he likes his hair long (14 year old). I use to cut his hair when he was younger, but about 1st grade I nipped his head and since then he wanted to grow it out long... he looks good with it... Now my 16 year old daughter has a few friends that are stylist and she lets them work on her. All my kids are mix, my daughter wants straight hair, has beautiful curls that she's tortured through the years... She has a really cute bob her friend did for $10 and she paid for it...

I had a stylist I loved in Illinois but when I moved to Texas 15 years ago, I had a really bad experience that I stop paying $50 for a bad hair job... I'm afraid to find someone new, I'm always disappointed, and now I'm not into the new styles that are out... I like my straight hair for the most part, maybe too simple but it isn't that much work to maintain...

Me, me! I do! Funny you ask because I almost asked the same Q yesterday as I braved to REALLY cut DS's hair.
I tried to use the "lollipop trick" but it only resulted in sticky, hairy mess. But he looks cute. Still needs a little work in the back but overall for someone who is not trained... :)

I also cut DH's and DD's hair. Though they both hate it cause it takes a long time.

I once chopped a huge amount off my own on the eve of finding out I was pregnant w/ my 1st. What was I thinking?! I was high w/ excitement. Lol.

I plan to homeschool so I guess I won't worry too much about the slight crookedness. ;)

Oh my gosh! I tried one of those trimmer things when my boys were little and it did not end well. We're talking buzz cuts that they ended up with by the time I got done. I did try to cut their hair at first, but both my son's have the thickest mops on their heads, and everything I did just made it look like bowl cuts. So, from very early on, it was long hair or to the barber!

I cut my daughter's hair. She has no layers or bangs, and it's on the long side, so I just need to cut it straight across the bottom. It's not perfect but nobody has ever noticed. I don't cut my son's hair. I could never layer it properly, and with is being short and very straight, every mistake would show.

My DDs are 9 and still put up with letting me cut their hair - fortunately it's straight and fairly easy to cut, and they've both decided to let their bangs grow out so I don't have to deal with that anymore.
My mom cut my hair until I was in HS, I think. In college I used to trim my own bangs (although I did a really bad job once) and get professional hair cuts about twice a year - now I get it cut about every two months at the same place that DH has been getting his hair cut for decades (he had a hard time finding places that could do a good job on Asian hair when he was in college and since then it has been pretty much a "I found a place that works and don't want to change" thing)

I imagine when my son leaves for college he'll have to see a barber or go to a salon.
