So hubby and I took a date day since we didn't get to celebrate our anniversary last week, and we went to get him a gift. He wanted some more DJ stuff, and the store we went to had a kid sized, red drum set. OH MY GOSH! My 4 year old is really good with beats, and loves drums. Then we found an electric guitar that was really reasonabley priced. We are waiting for the keyboards to come in. So our kids are getting a drum set, electric guitar, and keyboard for Christmas. They'll stay in the basement, but did we lose our minds!?! Would you get these things for your kids?
My husband just asked our boys what they want for Christmas and the 6 year old said a guitar and the 4 year old said drums! SCORE!!
Ya'll are the BEST parents ever! LOL. My parents bought me my first drum set when I was around 9 and I played all the time, was in several 'rock bands', this was the 80's so you can imagine.
Anyway, my bedroom was next to the living room, we grew up in a 900sq ft house, so Mom and Dad have fond memories of me and my friends 'tearing it up'.
Music is a great avenue for the kids, Best Christmas ever!
We have very good friends that gave their girls a drum set and a guitar for a gift one Christmas.
They had them play in the garage.
It was the beginning of the love of music for the girls, next was a Piano, then Saxophone,
They were each in a band, then Marching band. Both Drum majors..
Both excellent and well behaved children.. The parents always know where the girls are and their house is one of the homes that the kids friends love to hang out at.
We have an adult electronic drum set, guitar, electric guitar, bongos, tamborines, flute, small kids electronic drum set, etc. Yeah, we're crazy music lovers in our house!! Enjoy!

You are brave, brave.....Unless your basement is sound proof. I couldn't do it myself. Have a huge issue with loud noise and repetitiveness so drums wouldn't last in my house. But with that said, I'm sure your kids are going to have a blast.......ear plugs anyone???

Yes, in fact our son got a small sized drum set when he turned 3. One of his favorite things ever! He has a toy Power Tour guitar (great toy - I recommend it!!) and a small real electric guitar. He has taken music camps and when he was little he did Kindermusic for many years. He has a fiddle and loves doing bluegrass camp - he has learned many songs. He makes up songs on the piano and he starts piano lessons this year. He still is very passionate about music - he's 7 now.
No, because I am easily annoyed, but everyone else has bought them for the kids. It's adorable, for about 10 seconds, then I send them to the other room with it. But did you see Never Say Never? Your kids could be the next Bieber!~ I LOVE that freaking kid.
We got our then 2 year old a set of drums last year. Hands down the best gift so far. He plays with it enough to get good use out of it and not too much that we get annoyed. We taught him to close the door when he plays to help, lol! You guys now have me thinking about a guitar for next year...
When you are pulling your hair out just keep reminding yourself that they are learning and being creative - it's much better than an XBox!

My daughter is allowed to have ELECTRIC instruments that come with headphones! She has an electric guitar and an electric drum pad. She also has a keyboard. She enjoys banging away on all three--with headphones.
We'd have no problem allowing her to get an instrument without headphones like an acoustic guitar, a violin or a real drum set if she had a real interest in taking lessons and practicing. Until then--it's headphones for her and no headaches for us!
Welcome to the club!! Our oldest son begged for drum lessons and a set when he was 8. He has now been playing for 3 years and is quite gifted in music. I don't know how to judge giftedness in music but his teachers can and they are blown away by him. He even put on his very own concert with his music instructor on guitar and vocals and is working on the next one...he sold tickets and made a boatload of money.
Drums have been a great outlet for him. He loves music and we love to see him loving it. I am saddened when I hear parents say they would never go for a particular instrument because it drives THEM crazy.Believe me..we have so many parents comment about our son taking up drums. Sometimes our kids choose their own destiny and we need to support it...even if it is with a wince or earplugs.

I do not think you are crazy at all. My six year old got his drum set for Christmas last year and started taking lessons at home once a week. He loves it! I would suggest buying headphones, the big ones that construction workers wear, -- not because of driving you crazy but for the simple fact of protecting your eardrums. He must wear them, too, at this age while he is plAying to avoid any future hearing loss.
We finally gave in to one son that wanted a drum set. He spent more time asking and harrassing us to get him one than he did playing and practicing. We did buy our kids trumpets, trombones, and they played in the school band.
I told my kids that they had to have one year of either band or choir in High School, their choice. They all had a wonderful time. I had 6 in band and two in choir. My band kids had more fun and went more places. (New York, San Francisco, Austrailia.)

We DID get all of these things for our son over the years - although we did start him off on an acoustic guitar because learning on an acoustic builds better playing skills. But you did NOT lose your minds. (Just think - you WILL know where they are when they playing. lol)
Most of the time you will be able to block out the sounds just like any other noise your kids make. And, of course, you will have to set a "curfew" (especially for the drums). Drums seems soooo much louder after dark. lol I found, though, that it wasn't the volume that bothered me as much as the repetition, repetition, repetition, repetition...... And it's okay to suggest that he mix it up a bit. Oh - and there are always ear plugs.
You will want to put something on the ceiling and walls of the basement to help with the sound - drums "bouncing" off concrete walls is not pleasant for you or them.

One year my stepsons' mother got them guitars for Christmas - 1 acoustic and 1 electric and I think they were 8 and 9 at the time. Apparently her intention was to sign them up for lessons so they could actually learn how to play (they didn't play any other instruments and did not know how to read music) but told them she couldn't afford the lessons this year and they would have to wait until next year. Now, I'm sorry, but that's just stupid. If you don't think you can afford lessons for a while, I don't see the point of spending the money on musical instruments now. The boys never got guitar lessons and the guitars just sat and collected dust, but Mom still got be the "cool parent" that year for buying them.
A couple years later, the younger brother wanted a drum set, so of course, she got it for him, but again, he didn't take any lessons and never learned how to actually play them. Apparently, their mom's brother was going to teach him but never did. So again, a waste of money.
I guess if it is your intention to actually sign them up for lessons so they can start to learn how to play, then more power to you. But otherwise they are going to just be some expensive "toys" that will quickly lose their appeal. My advice would be to sign the 6 year old up for guitar lessons but he may need to learn on an acoustic guitar first. Maybe some day you guys will have your own little home-grown rock band!
I grew up taking piano lessons and eventually also played clarinet and saxophone in band. If my daughter was interested in any instrument, I would make sure she got lessons on how to actually play. It really bothered me that my stepsons never had the opportunity to actually learn how to play the guitar and drums - I would have happily paid for lessons myself but their mother was really touchy about it, probably because she knew she herself could not afford it.
