So, I have a one year old, and I have not gotten her a halloween costume yet. My problem is I made an error in our checking account, and am unable to go buy a costume. Does anyone have any ideas about making a costume from things in the house? I was wanting her to be a teddy bear, but now I don't know...

What can I do next?

one year my daughter was a bunny. We used footie pj's, took twp pairs of my hubby's socks and made ears (can't quite remember how, I think I used a metal hanger) then took a sock and balled it up and pinned it to her bottom for the tail, it was very cute!

My one my friends used a brown sleeper and attached a felt tail to the back. She used a temporary stitch to attach little ears to a tan or brown hat, and ta-DA! She had a monkey. It was very cute.

You could also unbend one or two wire hangers, stretch some pantyhose over it, and fold them into the shape of wings. With that accessory, you could have an angel, bird, butterfly, fairy, dragonfly, regular fly, etc, etc. Just add face paint and a few accessories over a one color outfit and you have a costume.

Familyfun.com had some really cute pictures of costumes you can whip together from things around the house. Especially if you have any kind of felt or paint around, you can make almost anything. My son was born in July, so for his first Halloween, I didn't want to buy a costume, but I still wanted to dress him up (of course it was for me--and the pictures are adorable!). We happened to have a gray one-piece outfit for him, so I went out and got 2 pieces of felt, one gray and one white, and I whip-stitched an oval of white over his chest and tummy, then safety-pinned a headband and doggy ears with the rest of the felt. After that, a little eyeliner to color his nose and he was a really cute puppy! You could use a green outfit and cut out petals from felt or construction paper and make her a flower, or a take a black outfit and make her some kitty ears. It all depends on what you already have in her closet. Red shirt and black skirt? Put some mouse ears on her and you've got Minnie Mouse! If you want more ideas, just email me with what you have in the closet, and I'll see if I can help more. Good luck!

When my daughter was small and we did not have much I did alot of costumes from stuff around the house. One year my kids were a cowboy and cow girl, one year my daughter was a cat, she wore a black sweatsuit and i put a little nose and whickers on her face with eye liner!

Hope this gives you some ideas!

One year we did the Rodeo Clown thing. I have 3 little girls and they loved rodeos so we did our first little one up as a rodeo clown and it was so cute! We just took a long sleeved button shirt and striped tights and then took a pair of big shorts, (they were an old pair of mine) and made suspenders to hold them up. We tied a bandana on the waist and then put a bandana scarf around her neck and put her hair in pigtails (she had tons of hair!) then painted her face like a clown. ( We didnt use lots of makeup just enough to make her look kinda like a clown). Then topped it off with her little boots. SOOOOO CUTE!!! And with this kind of outfit, you have so many options with what they wear.

You could put her in all white & tape black spots on her clothes & she can be a dalmation dog. Paint her lil nose black & take a hat & make floppy ears.

Or if she is just one you could just put her in a orange halloween shirt...

Hi M., I am Mother of four, ages 8, 10, 11, 19, two grownup steps, with 3 & 4 yr old step grand babies living with me. My husband is also a truck driver.

You already have fantastic costume suggestion, but still I am going to add to the list.
*WITCH *PUMPKIN *BEE
When my oldest was one year it was very cold.. but family insisted on taking her with the older children. This is what we did; Dressed her warmly in her own clothing, then put my black sweet shirt on her - was large enough to be a dress on her.. she wore her black shoes, for a hat I took a cereal box black marker or paint and color it black.. cut a half circle to fit her head - roll to make a cone -tape it to hold shape, for brim of hat cut circle.. smaller circle in the middle mad to attach to the cone by cutting wedges from center out and fold up onto the cone and tape. use yarn or string- poke hole on each side of brim next to cone.. now hat can be tied under the her chin..
Simple *WITCH- large black sweat shirt, cardboard/poster board / cereal- food boxes, string, shoes. I had green eye shadow at the time and rubbed it onto her little face.. CUTE! CUTE! CUTE!

For another child *PUMPKIN- I dressed him in orange sweats, painted face orange, (made HIS face a Jack-o-lantern) triangles at the eyes, nose, then mouth of your choice - cheek to cheek.

this year; *BUMMBLE BEE - dress the child, black pants and an over sized yellow sweat shirt, black electrical tape around the body of shirt, (black Pants - serve as the stinger!) A black stocking cap if you have one for the bee's head.

Thanks for letting me travel down memory lane.. HAVE FUN!! D. H.

A couple years ago my daughter was a crayon. I took sweat pants and a sweat shirt and some electrical tape to make it. I put two black stripes around the bottom of each leg and two black stripes around her neck, then wrote crayola with the black down the front of her sweatshirt and leg. I used a piece of construction paper to make a coned shaped hat and she was a crayon.

i had the same problem a couple of years ago, and i decided to take a pair of his overalls and a flannel shirt and make him a scarecrow, i accesorized it with using a glue gun i glued little birds to the hat and shoulders, i glued straw inside the lining of the wrist part of the shirt and ankles of the overalls, i took a wicker planter and used it for a hat and glued the straw around the inner rim and painted his face, he was the cutest... he was 1and 1/2 at the time now he's 3 we had more compliments on that costume... it would work for girl or boy.... hope this helps, V.
